In 2005, a classic blue and white Yuan Porcelain Vase – Gui Guzi Descends the Mountain – was sold for 230 million yuan at Christie's in London, setting the world's highest auction record for Chinese art at the time and bring everyone’s attention to Yuan Qinghua porcelains. Since 1979, Rao Keqinin has been trying to replicate Yuan Qinghua in Jingdezhen. The Palace Museum never collects modern work except for Rao Keqin's Gui Guzi Descends the Mountain vase, because it represents the level of modern replication. YIT visited Rao Keqin’s family in the Sanbao Village of Jingdezhen, "You must make good porcelains, when you are no longer around, they are still here.”

Guiguzi was sold for 230 million
Everyone's attention was suddenly attracted to Qinghua ceramics from Yuan Dynasty
It was not expected to become so popular in a few years
The Palace Museum doesn't usually collect things made by modern people
But it believes that the work of Guiguzi
Can be replicated by modern people
That's why it collected one
The place is also known as Sanbao, it’s abundant in Sanbao ore
In 1979 I was working in the Ceramics Gallery
The Japanese gave us a set of books about ceramics
And “Yuan Qinghua” was one volume of it
We were shocked
We knew nothing about such beautiful art that our ancestors created
At that time, our country did not explicitly separate it from Ming Qinghua
Made it a subject of study
And started restoring Yuan Qinghua ceramics as such
Before receiving the books
We have also picked up a lot of Yuan Qinghua porcelain pieces on the site of ancient kilns
It’s different from Ming or Qing Qinghua as well as modern Qinghua
It’s big and thick, and the style is free
Few people knew about Yuan Qinghua
It’s classified as porcelain of the Ming Dynasty
He asked for a very high price
Finally we got it to one thousand yuan
That’s how Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum bought it
So that’s the first real Yuan Qinghua that we’ve ever seen
I was in charge of the warehouse
I looked closely at it everyday
It became the treasure of the museum
Accomplishing such a great deed for Jingdezhen
Back then in the museum
A group was found specifically to replicate Yuan Qinghua
They were all art students
And I had expertise in Qinghua
Food was simple
We spent all our time in the shape forming room
Although it’s the initial stage
It’s the first time that mainland China had ever seen replicated Yuan Qinghua
At that time foreign market was very important to us
Japanese loved it, they’d take them all
These shapes of the Yuan Dynasty are remarkable
The Ceramics Museum made some base
But they were not like the original ones
Throwing, trimming with knife
Applying the Qing Dynasty method to the Yuan Dynasty ceramics
Porcelain made this way were too smooth
They just didn’t seem right
Later an experienced artisan told us
That these porcelains were shaped by molds
That’s the reason
Why they have not-so-smooth surfaces
Yuan Qinghua paint is blackish blue
That makes the color rich in layers
Pure bright blue doesn’t look good
To this day I am still trying to figure out the source of the paint
There is a young man in Yunnan recently
Who has been sparing no effort to find the right ore
For me to do experiment with
“Painting dragons should start with the nose”
“It turns out weird when you start from the back”
People from the Yuan Dynasty were free, and willful
So they painted great paintings
Ming official kilns unified the style, setting a unified standard
So there was no soul in their paintings
The dragons of the Yuan Dynasty were fierce and slim
While Ming dragons look stupid
A mineral from Sanbao
Has high sodium content
Sodium-containing raw materials can be made glaze
It’s convenient
Just seven, eight kilometers ahead
Yuan Qinghua porcelains have uneven glaze
We saw the carved pot in the Palace Museum
It’s thicker here and thinner there
Looked like it’s glazed, so we learned from it
And it worked
In the year of SARS, 2003
I took a few necessities
And went to a town called Ruokeng in Anhui Province
There was a wood kiln running
I worked there alone for a year
And realized that wood kiln didn’t work for Yuan Qinghua
While gas kiln worked very well
Burn slowly at low temperatures
Historically, the literaties were not taken seriously at that time
So they come to paint porcelains
Like Guiguzi, Chasing Han Xin
After painting it myself
I felt that they were paint by the same person
Who had very strong styling capability
The Xiao He Chasing Han Xin at Night pattern
We sat on the carpet
Very carefully watched the pot
The officer appears to be an officer
And ordinary people are ordinary
There is even grass pattern on the paddles of the boatman
During the 89 years of Yuan Dynasty (actually 98 years)
Yuan Qinghua progressed rapidly
And achieved a lot
After graduation, at Wei Min Porcelain Factory
I met my wife
I opened my own workshop in 1999
And my wife started making clay
My son had been out there for years
And finally returned to Jingdezhen
My daughter understood the elements of Yuan Qinghua
Decorating modern objects, making the past serve the present
Doing it as a family is good
So we have a common language
We put a lot of energy in every little thing
So we dare not to hire help
Later my daughter-in-law also fell in love with it
It feels great
To work together as a family
A while ago there was a brush pot like this that was painted with fish algae pattern
My brush was too thin to achieve the effect
It’s very well burned
But we couldn’t sell it
Though it’s ordered in advance
I felt like I should paint a new one for him
After all porcelain outlives us all
When we are no longer alive, they are still here
It’s been four decades
Doing this for life is fun
Now I’m still exploring
You have a world of fun ahead of you
