you know doesn't really happen for City
so I think it'll be a I think it'll be a
different type of game I think they will
try and go for more control listen do I
want to I was working for City last week
uh the Chelsea game and I was like this
is the best game I've seen in such a
long period of time and I'm thinking can
I even say that on the chall at the end
of world it doesn't matter if they
didn't win it was just the best game and
would I see that again against Liverpool
and take a 4-4 I'd love to see it
because I still feel over that course
City will go on and and win the league
but don't we like those sort of games
feel that pep wouldn't like it would you
can imagine him traveling home you know
when he's on the plane home or whatever
he's doing com think scratching his head
thinking we've conceded four yes we've
played played well we've scored four
away from home but that's kind of what
he expects from his team yeah there two
or three days after that and then with a
whole International break it'll have
been driving him completely mad for the
last two weeks that how his team have
conceded four away from home so I like
you I think he'll put a Bernardo Silva
sat next to rodri simply because Jon
Stones he's not there is he because he
he might played him as a right back and
the inverted fullback if you like and
had that little bit more Security in
Midfield it depends how he gets that in
that's the point whether the center back
can go and step in he will do that talk
about coverage whether he's fit you know
it's what he does in those situations
whether he changes it do you think Glen
there is an argument that in terms of
whatever the sort of title race ends up
looking like and I say that because I
kind of hate the idea of using the
phrase title race after 12 games of any
season but might it be that when we look
back on that Chelsea 40 draw with
Manchester City the very fact that
somebody showed if you go for it against
Manchester City as great as they are
they can be got at and maybe that's a
message to teams like Liverpool that
your best way to attack city is to
attack
city yeah but Steve that only works for
for certain amount of teams you know
what I'm saying if if everyone opened up
and went for them it's only the the
higher echelons of the league with with
the attack and talent like like Chelsea
have got I'm not suggesting Bournemouth
do it Glenn I'm I'm Wonder Liverpool
might do it no I think they will 100%
we've seen them get we've seen them get
success from from adopting that approach
in the past against Manchester City
especially when it was the the famous
three of firmino man and Salah and where
for me know droping and leave that space
in behind but for me it like brownie
says that is what the Premier League is
all about it was fantastic football I
think everyone in the country thoroughly
enjoyed sitting down on their Sunday
afternoon taking that in but I also
agree with Paul that I bet on the
playing home pep was like the one person
that was like I'm not happy that we need
to close shop a little bit we we need we
we don't want that every week because
it's just he likes to control games
doesn't he with possession and
manipulate teams and he didn't get to do
that at Chelsea no he didn't but you
know you look as well when Cole Palmer
scored I still thought you know a minute
later City going to come back and score
another I it's like please referee carry
this on a little bit longer because
there's another goal in something I
wanted to ask you to um we'll see what
you thought Paul is um did you think
City maybe underestimated Chelsea
slightly to play in that style to open
it up because Chelsea haven't been
firing yet so they've got quality for
sure but you know would they have
treated that in the same way if it was
Arsenal Liverpool away potentially not
um like you say team selection would
have probably played a part and he
wouldn't have been that open maybe did
he disrespect Chelsea I don't know
coming off the back of a 4-1 at at
Tottenham that they had I say disrespect
underestimat do you know of what they
could deliver at home I don't think I
don't think Pep's like that though is he
I mean you look at the the the way that
he is the way that he approaches games
the way that he sets his team out I
don't think he underestimates anybody in
that Premier League regardless of who
he's playing no disrespect to any of the
teams you look at the bottom three you
look at the bottom five I think he sets
his team up and he prepares in exactly
the same way regardless of personnel
listen if they're playing Lon at home if
they're playing Burnley at home the
Personnel may be slightly different but
I think the way he sets them up in his
preparation watching him and having seen
what he's achieved and getting to kind
of know him through the media you you
can't imagine he would approach any game
lightly can you let's let's move the
focus back on to the game on Saturday
then because there's a really
interesting piece Jamie carer's piece
that he writes his column for the
telegraph was was basically talking
about the subject that we've got onto it
as in should Liverpool even think about
changing the way they do things because
it's Manchester City and Jamie was
asking the question can Trent Alexander
Arnold Glenn still play this kind of
more attacking hybrid role that he plays
when the opponent is Manchester City
judging by what you guys have been
saying he's almost got no choice but to
do it because it's become their
identity well I I think that obviously
you need to read the game and there's
going to be moments where Trent can
really step in and play that hybrid role
but there's going to be moments where he
need to take his medicine and try and
get back into that right back slot and
protect um for me he's got to play for
them um 100% but I don't I don't think
there's I don't think you can as as a
Liverpool fan when I when I look at them
as a unit I don't think Liverpool can
sit in
and contain Manchester City I just don't
think they can do it their best and
their most effective form of of of
defense is attack as far as I'm
concerned and and I'm sure the Liverpool
fans will think exactly the same that
that they've seen it before that they'll
want to do it again it's a case it's
it's pretty similar without flipping it
to the England side do we protect our
weaknesses or play to our strengths I
think as an international side we we
quite often defend our weaknesses rather
than playing to our strengths and the
strengths are in the final two-thirds of
the field and I feel that's where
Liverpool are the attacking players that
they've got and I think Trent deployed
further down the field is much more
effective than he is in a right back
role I get that but when you're going to
come up against City you're not going to
have anywhere near the possession that
you would have in the other games that
we've seen Liverpool dominate where he
can have buildup where he can go and
step in they have control of the game
City are going to control more most of
those areas if he goes and empties that
and goes into those areas dku foran
he'll be sat ready for that play duu
because of that they will be either or
Phil foran has often played against
Trent if you watch the history of the
game because he's got that pace he can
go down the outside the feel like
Trent's still going backwards he got a
slight flaw and we're talking slight and
the defensive angles because he's
amazing going forward for Chelsea to
draw with Manchester City and that was
Sterling against Walker literally every
time Sterling picked the ball up he just
went at Walker and I've not seen Kyle
Walker have such an uncomfortable
afternoon for a long long time and I
think doku could do that to Trent
Alexander Arnolds there's a look on
Michael Brown's face that says he's seen
Kyle Walker have plenty of comfortable
afternoons but I'm not sure we want to
know about any no not that's not that's
not on the pitch I I did actually I did
actually I did actually say to you know
Sterling tested you comes at you he said
yeah because they're not always used to
as you say somebody running so direct I
thought Raheem Sterling on the day by
the way and I've been critical at times
I thought he was really really positive
he really good point to prove and and
and you know I was really really
impressed with him he did test City out
and and You' seen what he can deliver
and and again yeah that that's the point
isn't it Liverpool have got a really
strong front three that they can do that
in the areas but it's whether City open
up and let that control go and there's a
a nice piece in the guardian today
actually with a a headline which
actually tells you everything you need
to know pep has sacrificed control and
let Jeremy dku bring the chaos which I
like Glenn it in dku in that sort of old
school out andout Winger is that just
yet another way for Manchester City to
win they play amazing football and they
can beat you and will beat most teams
doing that they can go more direct
they've learned to do that with Harland
is this just another way a third way a
different way to play which could be
just as
effective yes this is somebody very
different from I would say most people
that have played under pppa Manchester
City Sterling to a certain extent but he
changed his ways he would he'd be more
possession based I think we've seen
greish coming and he doesn't really go
at people too much he's always cutting
back and looking for that pass or that
cross I feel as though he changed his
ways last year with Highland and he he
had something somebody could go more
direct and when teams were sting he
could put a ball in and could cause
chaos whereas doku I just think I for me
players like Jeremy dku are the reason
why I watch football that's pure
entertainment when he gets the ball when
he picks the ball up and he's got no
other thought in his mind but to go at
his mind and create something I that
that is for me get you on the edge of he
do cross until he doesn't cross it to
Glen Murray on the back stick then he's
going to come over say hang on a minute
I'm talking as a fan you know what I
mean that that is what you want to see
though isn't it you like last weekend
Sterling I thought it was brilliant
every time I was like on the edge of my
seat on the S like go on go on and and
Jeremy D he does that and he has added a
different string another ball to that to
that Manchester City Utah before we move
on from this Glen just listening to you
guys talk there if we're saying
Manchester City have effectively three
different ways to beat you plan a is not
quite going for whatever reason one in
every 10 games it's not happening we'll
go direct to Highland if that doesn't
work well we we'll give it to doku and
we'll just play with a an out andout
Winger how many ways did Liverpool have
to beat you and might that end up being
the difference between them come the end
of the
season a tough question Steve I don't
they have they definitely haven't tell
him that Glenn don't tell him that he
loves that smiling away now that you
actually just give you
a that one he's just sat on that little
white fence of he's loving it and he
just just sat there perched on it no I I
think that is all ultimately what sets
pep and City apart is is what we're
talking about there that Evolution and
the different ways to beat you I feel as
though at one stage City only had one
way to beat you and that was through
possession and manipulating you and
waiting for one of you to knock off
whereas now you you mention those
different ways that it can beat whether
it's Docker whether it's highand whether
it is passing to submission Liverpool I
don't feel as though they've got as many
ways to hurt you but the main one is
Salah isn't it and it always has been I
mean I feel as though he's numbers uh
outstanding let alone the one thing that
strikes me more than anything about
moala is his robustness he's always fit
always plays 90 minutes he's constant
and he has been for what six years
[Music]
now my name's Joe Wilkinson and I'm
doing a podcast cuz I love football what
I love more is the idea of being friends
with a professional footballer the
footballer I'd like to be friends with
is Patrick bford hello Patrick will you
be my friend um that's yet to be decided
okay not what I was hoping my mates of
footballer is the new BBC sounds podcast

fall in love with
me search for my mates football on BBC
sounds this is the football daily with
Steve
Crossman
right we're going from the top of the
Premier League down to the bottom
Everton play Manchester United on Sunday
and their first game uh since they were
docked 10 points it's a 430 kickoff full
commentary from goodison with John
Murray and Leon Osman so we're gonna
hear from Shawn D in a moment but
Michael before we do that I just want to
get some insight from you because you
were you were captain at Portsmouth when
they had nine points deducted in 2010
after they went into Administration so
obviously totally different
circumstances went on to be relegated
and obviously the club from then went on
a big slide and they're only really
starting to fully recover Now take us
into a dressing room when you're dealing
with that I think it's an extremely
difficult situation that that's a given
I think the difference for me when we
were at Portsmouth it was towards the
end of the season as you said in March
we were already to know at the bottom
seeing is it a possibility to try and
get those results you know you're
struggling players are not really I
think there's a lot of players who you
knew weren't going to be at the football
club and then when that come in there've
been financial difficulty for such a
long period of time um it almost was
stting to become inevitable because the
stuffing was knocked out yet because
there was such uncertainty off the pitch
what's going to happen payments um is
the club even secure we went right to to
one game in particular was over you know
it was a a a pretty much meal on the
Friday night and you find out that the
club is liquidated it's finished now you
talk about situations of not getting
paid not being where they're going to be
a football club for it to be finished
now that was shock around that table
like you've never seen no security for
nobody the fans you've got the Kitman
you got people who've been there forever
who obviously love Portsmouth and it was
a real real family club and that's the
difficulty from there on I think the
difficulty um which is different to
Everton because I look now and say Well
they're on a good run good group of
players who are ready for the fight they
will still believe yes it's a big kick
for them they'll be looking and thinking
you know his relegation round the corner
but you feel like they can go and get
out of it you feel like they've got
enough in that dress room to compete
against Luton shefford United Burnley
Bournemouth obviously just just around
the situation so it is a very very
difficult situation because it's your
livelihoods and that's what relegation
brings into play and and
