Former Arsenal man and legend David Deane has been very critical of Mikel Arteta's touchline
antics and criticism of VAR when he spoke on an interview on TalkSport People. He did
sympathise with the manager for decisions going against him but asked him to control his emotions
and did go on to criticise our lack of chance creation in the game. Martinelli people,
you know, a great player. Fortunate to have him at the Emirates. Allegedly for Brazil,
he's been playing in a new role, people, playing up front. And as you can see in the images in
front of me, or better yet, the video, in Brazil training, in terms of build-up play,
Martinelli has almost been deployed as a striker, dropping deep and so on and so forth, people.
Which I'm here for. I believe Mikel Arteta, you know, has to be flirting with long-term
Martinelli being an option up front. I don't necessarily think he's necessarily ready for it
because I do think, you know, his biggest strength and weakness is that he's very chaotic. He always
wants to be involved. And as a striker, you know, I think Gabriel Jesus, his fellow Brazilian,
has the balance of when to get involved and when to be selfless. And I don't necessarily think
that's an immediate thing that Mikel Arteta will be able to teach Martinelli. But in turn,
I think it's something to learn. But if he's learning how to play that for Brazil, indirectly,
as you lot know, Arsenal benefit from that, really. And he has the scope. I mean, he's
flirted with playing up front on occasion for Arsenal. And again, you know, I'm so proud of
our star boy, man, from his first debut. A bit like with Saka, you see what Saka's doing for
England. To see Martinelli get into the Brazil setup and get his first Brazil goal, it's what
dreams are made of. And he even paid homage with his celebration, people, to Fabio Vieira and Fabio
Vieira's kid that's recently entered this world. Congratulations to him. He did say,
I've never played so much in creation, but it felt good. Denis has been talking to me,
giving me confidence. I feel comfortable playing like this. He just asks us to float a lot and be
close to each other. It went very well with Vinny and everything will be fine with Jesus.
We are used to playing together at Arsenal. And I think I speak for every Arsenal family.
We're going to see you two and Saka play together on a more frequent basis. You know,
when you look at his chance creation and shots for Arsenal and in the Premier League, he's up
there. So he has the facilities to play up front. He's also top for dribbles with 14 in the
Champions League. Saka is second. So I don't want to see that gone anytime soon. You know,
going back to the Una Emery days, he said that he still sees Martinelli as a left winger,
despite him playing up front on occasion. People make a lot. I once praised his general play,
improving on his overall improvements, people. So big up Martinelli on that one.
From one Starboy to another, Declan Rice has spoken about making the move to Arsenal
when the transfer was going through. I was very nervous. It's natural. You're human.
You're human being bought for one hundred and five million. It doesn't feel normal.
But that was just because of what I've done at West Ham. When I signed for Arsenal,
I just thought I need to be Declan Rice. Amen. And that served him in good stead.
He also said at Arsenal, I'm playing in a slightly different role. There's a lot of
talk over whether I can play higher up the pitch. At West Ham, I was more box to box.
David Moyes used to say, Rome, do what you need to do to get on the ball. At Arsenal,
obviously, with the greatest of respect to West Ham, it's a lot more structured and you've got
to be more patient. We see a lot more of the ball. So it's about being more progressive.
I had predominantly played in a side that was really good at counterattacking,
so I had to make a change. Naturally, of course, he still needs to take those elements
of being Declan Rice, of what saw him bought for a club record, with obviously this new look,
Declan Rice, that Arteta wants to make. Obviously, we play a different style to West Ham. We're on
the front foot. A lot more teams set up on the low block. And I don't know if we'll ever mention
Declan Rice in the same aspect of Lampard, because Lampard was a goal scoring midfielder,
but he's showing elements. I've said it before. Personally, while you're seeing this household,
Declan Rice, in the number six, and it's almost we're flirted with this new look,
Declan Rice, taking that West Ham, Declan Rice, and this new look Arsenal want in a more advanced
role. I don't think you'll really see him thrive in that role until he served a year apprenticeship.
That doesn't mean he won't be good. That doesn't mean he won't thrive. He's already thriving.
But I just think with a year under your belt of what Mikel Arteta demands of you
in that role and individually, how it connects to the team collectively, I think next season,
you'll see the real, real Declan Rice. And it wouldn't help if we, you know, it wouldn't hurt
Declan Rice's cases if we were to get a number six. So that could allow Declan Rice to play
in this role indirectly. Yes, we currently play Jorginho. Declan Rice is the more advanced people,
but Declan Rice kind of has to do everything really. And maybe indirectly play with a hand
break, because if we play with Jorginho and Zinchenko with the greatest of respect,
we are weaker on the defensive transitions, as you've seen on occasions this season.
I mean, Declan Rice is one hundred and five million well spent. You know, it's almost
nobody. There was a lot said about his price tag. He's already shut that up. Me personally,
business is business. But and, you know, West Ham obviously got a great three for him.
But I think we owe West Ham something if I'm honest with you. Feel free to take La Conga
off our hands, West Ham. Me personally, where it comes to Martinelli, I believe he can play up
front. I believe he's a player. You've seen him play on the right hand side as well, mainly in
He's a player for me. You know, you look at the top players, obviously, you know,
top attacking players, they have positions where they thrive in more than others.
I don't see any reason why, you know, Gabriel Martinelli can't be a player that can thrive
on the left hand side, the right hand side or through the middle. His bread and butter is on
the left, obviously with a lot of injuries and what we're trying to do in terms of team play
and stuff. I don't really want to see us mess around with the left hand side of our pitch
unless it's the left eight, because we're kind of going to be crippling our build up play.
I believe for now, you know, Martinelli needs to stay playing on the left hand side,
but it is an option long term to be groomed as a striker. Of course, you know, he is ticking in the
right way. He is improving. You know, he doesn't just do things at 100 miles per hour. He's getting
variety in his game play. But I think that's more of a long term thing. Don't get twisted.
There's been occasions where you could argue Martinelli like with Trossach can play up front.
And I think even with that, you know, I think if he's playing with Gabriel Jesus, you know,
Gabriel Jesus can occupy the left at times. Martinelli can do the same as we've seen on
occasion. He does that very well with Trossach. And, you know, the only time I haven't really
seen Martinelli thrive when he plays through the middle, I'm sure he played up front last season,
a game against Sporting Lisbon away, I could be wrong. So I expect him to kind of struggle
in certain aspects. But if Brazil want to use him as that indirectly, that benefits Arsenal
and Mikel Arteta really, and it improves his footballing IQ. Because as you know,
the way you play from club to club or club and country, you know, collectively and individually
is a completely different thing. As I alluded to earlier in the vid, when it comes to Declan Rice,
for me, the world's his oyster. Like we all knew Declan Rice is a fantastic player. But when he's
playing around other good players and at a top club with the greatest of respect to West Ham
and playing in a different light, that's where you see the qualities. And there's been times
you've literally seen the same Declan Rice from a West Ham shirt in an Arsenal shirt.
Thank you very much for selling him to us, West Ham, because he's fantastic.
In terms of this new look Declan Rice, I mean, you know, for me,
you know, he's previously spoken about, I like to learn from Jorginho when he was at West Ham,
when Declan Rice was at West Ham. You've got him as a teammate, learn from him and take little bits
and pieces out of his game. I would like to see him look at Lampard and people like that, people
that make those third man runs and things, because I think Declan Rice has got it in his locker
to at least get 10 goals in all comps this season and a couple of assists. As I said, you know,
when he signed for Arsenal, a bit like with Pep Guardiola, you know, every person that signs for
Arsenal, they speak about how they thought they knew football. Mikel Arteta is changing them.
You know, imagine, you know, everything, you know, Declan Rice, England international,
won trophies at West Ham, played for a massive club like West Ham, played over 200 times,
probably for West Ham or something like that, and a significant number of games in the Premier League.
You've been playing football for a long time, and I'm sure David Moyes and Southgate and all
the other managers who've been around, they've taught him a lot of stuff. But, you know,
everything you thought you knew, it's like going to university to study as a doctor or something.
And then, you know, a world-leading professional doctor takes you into their organisation and tells
you that, yeah, a lot of the principles are the same, but everything you thought you knew was a
lie. It's going to take a while to get up to speed with that. Declan Rice has fitted us like a glove.
The very fact of, you know, nobody talks about the price tag says it all, really. Declan Rice is
doing what he needs to do. Money well spent, really, and truly so. I think Declan Rice could
become that A. I do think Martinelli could be groomed to play up front. And if we get into
a world where, you know, Martinelli can thrive in a number of positions, Declan Rice can thrive
in a number of positions and a couple of others, then that obviously means Mikel Arteta can tweak
things tactically and technically and cope with, ultimately, demands. We've got some very good
players, man. For me, I would say top, top, top Arsenal players for me, Saliba, Declan Rice and
Bakayo Saka. I just think them men are on something different, especially in recent weeks. Declan Rice
and Saliba is scary, you know, your age, because you're not in your prime. And it's scary, you know,
it's scary the amount of consistent performances, regardless of win, losing or drawing, that these
men thrive in, especially Declan Rice, really and truly. He saved our bacon against United,
saved us against Chelsea, which is also a former club of his. Bakayo Saka's the star boy. Obviously,
you've got Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus, two degrees in Cenko, Martinelli, people, you know,
so I'm all for it, really and truly. And when you look in our team, beyond the obvious,
who is the finished article? Yes, Eugenio Partey, the El Nenes, they're kind of what they are at
this age, but none of these players have really scratched the surface. So yeah, in relation to
David Deane's comments, you know, David Deane, you're a legend of mine and you're a man that a
lot of us Arsenal fans of a certain age, I would say 28 plus, I'm only 28, 29 in April. Make sure
you've got that in your calendars. And that once, maybe not so much now, but we'd love him back. We
were screaming for you to return to Arsenal, really and truly. So it did hurt to see you quite
critical of Mikel Arteta. I don't think you're necessarily wrong where you spoke about a bigger
question, more or less, is our chance creation and things like that. That's for me why we lost
against Newcastle, if I'm honest, because I think we competed well, we defended well, there was just
something missing in the final third. It does hurt, David Deane, because you're an Arsenal man.
And I don't know why you went out and said that, but come on, man, when other managers are showing
emotion and things like that, they've been praised. I know they get on to Klopp, but Klopp
was celebrated. Conte was celebrated. Jose was celebrated. A lot of them were condemned. And a
lot of managers, you know, Deserby came out and attacked VAR and refs and stuff. And I don't know
if anything's been said, but to me, it hasn't made this big circus. It's like Mikel Arteta said,
it's almost like the message isn't necessarily what's wrong, it's the messenger, which is the
fact that Mikel Arteta is saying that. But as George Graham said, it's to be expected. We're
VAR has done us dirty on a number of occasions in the last two years, including now. But
I also feel, you know, I look at the Brentford game, I look at Newcastle, we can waffle about
VAR as much as we want. Truly in my heart, I believe regardless of VAR, there was variables
that we could control that we didn't do well enough, really. I think I speak for every football
fan when I say there is a lack of consistency. VAR is baffling and it's not right. You know,
the decision should be spot on in a day and age where you've got all this money and all this
spotlight in the football. But as I teach you in Sunday league, control the variables you can
control, really. And, you know, if we know these people don't like us, if we know we're judged to
a different standard, if we really do feel like the boys and girls who cry wolf all the time,
you know, let's expect decisions to go against us, rightly or wrongly, people.
So, yeah, that's my opinions on everything we've said. But let me know your thoughts. Do you think
Martinelli can develop long term as a striker? Do you think he could do that right now? What do
you think of Declan Rice's development? Big up Gabriel Jesus because he's also fit as well.
Make sure you're checking out the rest of the other videos, people. If you're not going to do
anything, like, comment, subscribe, boost the YouTube algorithm. Let's move. We're flirting
with 60K people. I think we've got 57 and some change. We can definitely get that by next year.
So, yeah, man, bless you lot for tuning in. Appreciative to you lot for tuning in. Stay
blessed. Stay safe. Check out the rest of the vids. One love.
