Frogs are small animals that can jump very well.
They need moisture to survive.
Many frogs are able to absorb water and oxygen directly through their skin.
However, many species are found in watery environments
such as ponds, rivers, and wetlands.
This is because they will die if their skin dries out.
In addition, frogs have excellent night vision
and are very sensitive to movement.
Adult frogs usually eat a wide variety of insects
such as worms, crickets, snails, flies,
and other buzzing things that they catch with their long, sticky tongue.
In early spring, when the weather is just starting to get warmer,
adult female frogs laying hundreds of tiny eggs
can be found in calm or static waters.
These eggs float on the surface of the water
or under leaves above water in damp rainforests.
The baby frogs start out as tiny black dots
surrounded by a jelly-like substance that acts as protective layers.
A few days later, the eggs get fertilized.
After spending three to four weeks eating the yolk of their egg,
the baby frog develops external gills, a mouth, and a long tail.
If you look closely, they are comma-shaped.
Now the baby frog hatches from the egg.
They are called tadpoles.
The tadpoles swim like fish and breathe through gills.
They can't go on land,
so they feed on algae and other plant life in the water.
Over the next weeks, their body continues to develop,
forming a more distinct head.
This phase also includes the growth of the back legs,
which allows the tadpole to move in and out of the water.
The tail is an important tool for the tadpole in this life stage.
As the tadpole grows,
it takes about 14 weeks to transform into tiny frogs.
Now we call them froglets with a tail.
Once this stage is finished,
the frog or body starts to change shape,
and they develop front legs.
Next, the froglet's tails shrink away,
and skin grows over their gills.
As they develop lungs and eardrums,
their bodies become less rounded.
The froglets are all grown up.
They are big and strong enough to venture out into their watery world.
Now the tiny frog can start eating insects until becomes an adult.
A study shows that frogs have big, strong muscles in their thighs.
For their size, however, these muscles are immense.
This allows frogs to jump much farther relative to their small size than a human could.
These powerful jumps allow frogs to jump much farther to escape from predators.
Now, you know all about Grog's life cycle.
