Constitutional Heroes, Not Constitutional Traitors
Every November 10, our heroic attitude is questioned. Is there still a hero's spirit in the hearts of most Indonesians? Does red and white still flutter in their hearts? The battle of 10 November 1945 was indeed devastating. A British army officer who experienced that moment said 'Inferno'. Hell!. Even though the British were superior in weapons to the republican army, they lost in spirit and heroic spirit. The Indonesian people, who had been in love and euphoria for independence for about 3 months, felt challenged again when an external force wanted to re-colonize their homeland. It is better to die on the ground than to be colonized again. This heroic spirit infected the Suraboyo arek-arek warriors who fought with whatever weapons they had to repel the invaders. On paper, they would definitely lose, they would definitely perish at the hands of defense equipment which was already modern in its time.
