In the UC application system, students are allowed to designate an alternative major for each of the California universities. However, not all California universities review the alternative major choice. Given this feature, students should be more strategic in their major selection. For some schools that do not consider the alternative major, it may be wise to choose a primary major with less competition. Let's take UC Berkeley's business program as an example. Berkeley does not review the alternative major, so applicants can consider related majors such as economics, environmental economics and policy, operations research and management, or political economy before selecting business as their primary choice.
