早期美國無人機在戰場上的應用，並沒有突破需要駕駛員操作的限制。首先駕駛員需要駕駛這種遙控轟炸機到海邊，然後跳傘脫身，接下來纔是遙控轟炸機，在無線電的遙控下繼續飛行，直至對目標進行攻擊。二戰結束後，隨着航空技術的飛速發展，無人機家族也逐漸步入了鼎盛時期，截至目前很多國家都研製過無人機，這些無人機大多數需要地面工作人員協同操作，纔可以正常飛行。而有這樣一架無人機的出現，開創了無人機不需要地面人員操控的先河，它是第一架，由電腦自主控制飛行的無人機，也是第一架能夠從航空母艦上，起飛並且自行回落的隱身無人機，它就是美軍的“X-47B”無人駕駛攻擊機。
