Mozart, whose full name was Johann Chrysostomus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, composed his Fantasia in C minor, K475 at the age of 29. It was also at this age that he composed the 'Davidde penitente' and the six quartets which he dedicated to Haydn. Whilst researching this Fantasia I came across the following story:

Mozart loved to fantasise at the piano, and when he did, listeners were plunged into a rollercoaster of emotions. As if in a dream, they wandered through imaginary emotional spaces, which was certainly the aim of the maestro's art of improvisation, aware as he was of the sensitive impulses of the age and the audience's willingness to be overwhelmed by emotion.

We know of many such improvisations as part of Mozart's Viennese "academies" or his "subscription concerts", i.e. the concert evenings with orchestra that he organised at his own risk and at which he appeared as soloist in his piano concertos. An improvisation on the fortepiano, the piano of his time, was always included in the programmes of these acclaimed performances.

Mozart wrote down only a few of these improvisations, and only one was published: the Fantasia in C minor, K. 475, published by Artaria in Vienna in 1785. We do not know the original fee paid by the publisher, but it is unlikely to have exceeded 100 florins, or about 2,000, for the C minor Fantasy and the C minor Sonata that followed. Mozart could never have imagined what his manuscript of these two works would be worth two hundred years after his death. In 1990 it was sold at Sotheby's for around 2 million.

The story of this auction is also the story of the sensational discovery of the manuscript in a Philadelphia seminary - the same place, incidentally, where Beethoven's autograph of the piano version of his Great Fugue was rediscovered in a drawer by a cleaning lady in 2005.
