In order to acquire nationality at birth, there are two main theories.
The right to the soil and the right to the blood.
The right to the blood.
The child who is born obtains the nationality of his parents.
The right to the soil.
The child obtains the nationality of the place where he is born.
In France, it's a bit of a mix of the two.
If one of the two parents is of French nationality,
well, the child obtains French nationality.
That's the right to the blood.
But there are other situations that allow for French nationality,
even if the two parents are of foreign nationality.
If one of the two, at least, is born in France,
well, the child obtains French nationality.
That's the right to the soil.
Now, let's imagine that a couple settles in France,
a couple of foreign nationalities,
and that a child comes into the world.
Well, this child, at birth, will have the nationality of his parents.
But at 18, in the majority, he will obtain French nationality.
If he wants to preserve the nationality of his parents,
well, he must make the request.
