As Ukraine gears up to welcome a shipment of M1 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States,
all eyes naturally turn to the impressive M1 Abrams, a tank renowned as one of the mightiest in the world.
However, Russia's tanks should not be underestimated,
as they could present a formidable challenge to the M1 Abrams.
But the question is, what will be the strongest enemy for this Abrams tank?
Can it handle the tough Russian tanks in the brutal Ukraine battleground?
Join us as we explore Russia's deadly trio of tanks,
which pose a significant challenge to America's M1 Abrams in the Russia-Ukraine war.
T-80 BVM tank.
The T-80 BVM represents a comprehensive modernization of the T-80 BV tank,
bringing about substantial improvements in various aspects.
A notable upgrade is its new GTD-1250 gas turbine engine, generating 1,250 horsepower.
This enhanced engine not only boosts mobility, but also improves cold weather performance,
which is a crucial factor in Russia's vast and challenging terrains.
The T-80 BVM incorporates an array of defense mechanisms to bolster its survivability.
At the forefront of its defensive arsenal is the Drozd active protection system,
a hard-kill protection system designed to intercept and neutralize anti-tank missiles.
Complementing this cutting-edge defense is the tank's fortified wire cage armor on both the turret and hull,
substantially enhancing protection against threats, including RPGs and kamikaze drones.
Moreover, the detachable top turret wire cage aids in transport,
while cleverly designed cape covers reduce the tank's visibility on the battlefield.
Protection is a priority, and the T-80 BVM doesn't disappoint.
It features Relict Explosive Reactive Armor, also known as ERA, reducing penetration by over 50%.
Further enhancing survivability, the T-80 BVM incorporates the Relict Modular Dynamic Protection System
and anti-cumulative lattice screens, ensuring adaptability in various combat scenarios.
Augmenting its defensive suite is the Advanced 1PN96MT Thermal Imaging Sight,
which significantly elevates target acquisition capabilities.
In terms of armament, the T-80 BVM retains its 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun,
but upgrades it to the 2A46M4 variant, increasing range and accuracy.
It can fire newly developed rounds like APFSDS, Svinets-1, and Svinets-2,
with impressive armor penetration capabilities.
The tank can also launch the 9M119M Reflex anti-tank missile, extending the gun's range to 3 miles.
The T-90M, known as the ProRiv-3, was the best but also the rarest tank in the Russian operational fleet
when Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
Its power source, a V-92S2 multi-fuel diesel engine generating 1,000 horsepower.
Notably, the tank features self-entrenching abilities and is equipped with a deep wading kit,
allowing it to ford water obstacles up to 16 feet deep.
In terms of protection, the T-90M boasts enhanced armor defenses, replacing the earlier Contact V with ERA.
This upgrade is complemented by rubber side skirts featuring built-in armor plates,
cage armor, and specialized net coverings in strategic areas.
The tank is further fortified by its NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.
To deter threats, a countermeasure system triggers smoke grenade discharge in response to laser illumination,
thereby reducing the risk of enemy anti-tank guided weapons.
When it comes to firepower, the T-90M is armed with the advanced 2A8A1M gun,
offering an extended range and heightened accuracy.
Capable of firing 125mm ammunition, it can also launch 9M119 Reflex anti-tank guided missiles,
effective up to 2.5 to 3 miles.
The tank's arsenal is efficiently managed by a carousel-type autoloader, housing 22 rounds.
It further wields a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a roof-mounted,
remotely controlled weapon station housing a 12.7mm heavy machine gun.
The T-90M also excels in its fire control system and improved observation and aiming devices,
enabling a hunter-killer engagement capability.
Number 3. T-72B3M Tank
The T-72B3M, also referred to as the T-72B4, represents an upgraded iteration of the T-72B3 main battle tank,
developed by Ural Vagonzavod.
The key modification in this rare Russian combat vehicle is the inclusion of a 1130 horsepower engine
and automatic transmission, thereby enhancing maneuverability.
The T-72B3M comes equipped with a panoramic thermal imaging system designed specifically for the tank commander.
It also boasts deep fording capabilities, encrypted digital communication, and a self-entrenching blade.
This addition significantly improves target acquisition and battlefield situational awareness.
The automatic gear change system ensures smooth and precise shifts during operations.
The primary focus of the T-72B3M is on enhanced protection,
as it features anti-cumulative lattice screens and relic dynamic protection on the engine transmission compartment and rear turret.
Notably, the tank now incorporates a contemporary ERA kit,
providing superior protection compared to the older Contact V ERA suite.
Though some sources suggest the possibility of the T-72B3M being equipped with the ARENA-E active protection system,
this remains uncertain in the production variant.
The T-72B3M has been upgraded with a new 125mm smoothbore cannon, the 2A46M5,
capable of firing various projectiles, including guided anti-tank missiles.
These missiles can engage static and mobile targets day and night at ranges of up to 16,400 feet,
in addition it is also equipped with a Sosna-U sighting system, a modern ballistics computer enhances firing accuracy.
Considering these capabilities, the question arises.
Are these tanks truly poised to pose a significant challenge to M1 Abrams?
The answer is not straightforward.
The M1 Abrams is no slouch in terms of tank technology, showcasing its prowess in various aspects.
Yet these upgraded Russian tanks undeniably exhibit formidable features and have undergone substantial improvements.
However, despite these advancements, some experts believe that Russia's Soviet-era tanks,
including the T-72B3M, may face challenges when confronting modern tanks currently deployed in Ukraine.
In the end, the determination of their effectiveness can only be settled through direct battlefield engagement.
But is this the moment when these steel giants will truly engage head-to-head in a battle for supremacy?
If it's the time, will M1 Abrams prove its mettle and live up to expectations,
or will it fall short of the anticipated performance?
Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment. Thanks for watching.
