Objects may reflect or absorb light. A red object will absorb all of the colors except red. A blue object will absorb all of the colors except blue. The characteristic of light of absorption causes you to see certain colors and not see others.
White light contains all of the colors of the visible spectrum which include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Our world is full of colors. Let's take a look at a property of light that allows us to see colors.
Welcome to MooMooMath and Science. Check out this bright red car. Do you think the red car is
absorbing or reflecting the color red? The car is actually absorbing all of the colors of the
color spectrum except for red. Just a quick reminder, the color spectrum also called the
visible spectrum is made up of the following colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo,
or violet. Or you can remember it using ROYGBIV. So let's take a look at a demo showing how
absorption and color works. If an object is transparent the light just passes through the
object and is not absorbed like this clear plastic lid. You can see how the beam of light just passes
Now I will get these plastic lids. Let's see what happens. One is red and one is blue. This
flashlight has a beam of light that contains all the colors of the color spectrum which is commonly
called white light. As the light passes through the blue lid all of the colors are absorbed except
for blue. Hence the blue light. Same with the red lid except all the colors are absorbed except for
red. Now I'll try something a little bit different. I have a beam of only red light.
Notice when I shine it through the red lid it just passes through the lid almost like it's
transparent. This is because the red light is not absorbed. Now notice what happens when I shine the
same red light through this blue lid. It is absorbed and does not pass through it. Remember
how the white light passes through the lid. It is not opaque but translucent. The red light is
absorbed and does not pass through the lid. So the red lid absorbs all of the colors except for red
and the blue lid absorbs all of the colors except for blue. And this sunflower is absorbing colors
except for yellow. So that's how absorption and color works. I hope this helps and thanks for
