Is it better to have a separate kitchen, or to have a view in an open space?
In this video, in addition to discovering the pros and cons of both solutions,
I will also give you some advice to help you choose the one that suits you.
Leave a like on trust, and let's get started!
To help you decide, let's start with 6 factors.
6 factors that represent characteristics, priorities, but also problems,
that interest those who have to choose between a separate kitchen or a view.
The first factor is storage.
In the day areas, we all need some place where to put our things,
so some storage space to be able to use.
Do you think there is more storage space in the separate kitchen or in the open space?
Obviously it depends on the specific case, but in general we can say that the two solutions
play almost equally.
Surely the separate kitchen offers at least one more wall to be able to set up with the brushes
or to set up a part of the kitchen furniture, such as the columns, rather than the fridge,
and it can also be used to support a table, even if in this case we are not talking about storage.
Also, depending on the situation, the side of the wall in the day area is also usable for storage.
In addition to setting up furniture from the ground, such as bookshelves, curtains and cushions,
we can use it to create the wall equipped for the TV,
just to give an example that interests many,
and we can also set up a sofa, some armchairs or a desk.
So when you need storage space, it is always advisable to keep the separate kitchen
that allows us to use at least one more wall.
Right?
In reality, it is not always like this, because if your open space has enough space,
you can insert a kitchen with a peninsula or an island.
Also many furniture of islands and peninsulas offer storage space where to store everything.
Inside these furniture you can put stoves, various kitchen accessories,
small appliances, towels, blankets, pillows, garbage bags,
usually you have the connecting furniture, drawers, or extractable baskets.
Not to mention that, of course, the surface of the island or peninsula is also used.
The second factor to reflect on is the issue of food odors,
a very discussed problem on which there are always conflicting opinions.
The only undisputed fact is that in open spaces,
food odors do not obstruct their spread in the environment.
In some cases, the inspiration layers cannot do much about it,
including powerful and well-sized models.
Having said that, however, it is incorrect to say that with a separate kitchen
you will no longer smell food in the living room or in limited spaces.
The truth is that the problem depends on many factors.
It depends on what you cook, on the distribution of spaces and windows,
because maybe there is the possibility of creating air currents to make the odors come out more quickly,
and it also depends on the type of cap and how it is used.
There are foods such as garlic, onion, cabbage, and fried fish
that produce very strong and difficult to contain odors, even when the kitchen is separate,
because sometimes it is enough to open the door for a short time to let the odor pass.
To avoid the spread of the odor, or at least to limit it,
you should always turn on the vacuum cleaner, and if necessary,
ventilate even while cooking, in addition to evaluating the use of a perfumer for environments.
All this regardless of the solution you choose.
The third factor is the privacy issue.
The solution that offers more privacy, but also silence, visual order and, in general, tranquility,
is the separate kitchen.
The wall or partition walls create a screen that comes in handy in various situations.
First of all, you can cook without distracting those who are in the living room studying,
reading a book or working.
With the separate kitchen, also avoid disturbing those who watch TV,
who rests, who has the phone, or who is in the living room with other people.
At the same time, you too will not be disturbed while you are in the kitchen.
And let's not forget that walls have the great advantage of hiding the daily disorder
created during the preparation of food, or following a dinner with guests.
So, from the point of view of intimacy, the separate kitchen is the best solution.
The fourth factor is sharing, or the opposite of the previous point.
If you want to share the activities of living room and kitchen, the right choice is obviously the open space,
because there is no filter between the two areas.
Thanks to the open space, you can, for example, cook and, at the same time,
control your children who play or study in the living room.
If you then like to organize dinners with friends and relatives,
the open space allows you to prepare everything in your kitchen area,
but without isolating yourself in a closed room.
So you can prepare and at the same time entertain guests.
Since it is a single environment, it is easier to share the various activities with the rest of the family,
without physically moving from one environment to another.
The fifth factor is natural light, therefore the brightness brought by the rays of the sun.
To maximize the diffusion of natural light, obstacles must be removed.
Therefore, it goes without saying that without the walls and the door,
the light can flow freely throughout the environment.
However, it is necessary to evaluate the distribution of environments and windows,
in addition to exposure, because there are certain rare situations,
I emphasize, rare situations,
where the folding of the walls does not bring great improvements in terms of brightness.
The sixth and last factor is the visual impact.
By visual impact, I mean the aesthetic effect generated by the elements of the home within the space.
You can create a magnificent visual and scenic impact,
both with the separate kitchen and with that seen,
although in my opinion some open spaces have an extra step in this regard.
I am referring in particular to those open spaces that are quite spacious,
to be able to host an open kitchen,
where all the elements of the two areas, together,
create a captivating and coherent atmosphere.
According to my experience, well-sized and well-arranged open spaces
can hit in a positive way more easily than separate kitchens.
In summary, we have said that at the level of containment,
the two solutions play each other.
However, we must see the specific case
and the space available to insert containment elements.
As far as smells are concerned,
the separate kitchen has the advantage of containing them a little more than the open space.
And even on the privacy issue, we must give a point to the independent kitchen.
Sharing and natural light are preferred when choosing an open space.
And finally, there is the visual impact, which can be created with both options,
although as I told you, in my opinion, it is simpler in the case of the open space.
Ok, but in the end, which solution should you choose?
The separate kitchen or the open space?
Let's start with this data.
Some time ago, I did a poll on the channel,
where I asked you what you preferred between a visual kitchen or a separate one.
Out of about 900 voters, 72% chose the open kitchen-residence solution.
This overwhelming result tells us that open spaces are appreciated and are trending,
especially those with the island or the peninsula.
But of course, I do not advise you to choose based on trends.
Choose based on your habits,
therefore how you live in these areas of the house,
and in addition to habits, reflect on your priorities.
In these factors that I have shown you,
is there a need that is very important to you,
maybe more important than others?
In my case, for example, the priority is tranquility, privacy,
so I definitely choose the separate kitchen.
I have lived for years in an apartment with a cooking corner,
but for what my needs are, I prefer the separate kitchen.
To separate the living room and the kitchen,
there are still less rigid solutions than walls.
One of these solutions is glazing,
therefore glass panels mounted on metal frames
that adapt to openings of any size
and that perhaps represent the best solution to create a light filter between the two environments,
instead of a clear separation.
If you then want to find out what are the other systems
to divide the two environments without using the walls,
take a look at the video you find in the description.
