Hello everyone
Welcome to the history of the world
Many people are confused about the Beijing University and the Yanjing University
Because the son of Peking University is a member of Yandai
So they think that Yandai is the predecessor of Peking University
But that's not true
Peking University and Yandai University are not the same
Peking University was founded in 1898 by Emperor Guangshui
It was the first national university in China in the modern era
It was renamed Peking University on May 4, 1912
And Yanjing University was founded by Situ Lei Deng in 1919
It is one of the most large, best-quality, and most beautiful universities in China in recent years
As for how did Peking University move to Yanyuan
How did Yandai disappear
We will make a detailed explanation later
Speaking of Yanjing University, we must mention Situ Lei Deng
An article by毛泽东 called
Situ Lei Deng turned an American who truly loved China into an American nationalist
The Chinese language textbooks of mainland China are covered with sheepskin
Today, let's take a look at Situ Lei Deng and the Yanjing University he founded
Situ Lei Deng's English name is John Nathan Stewart
His ancestors are from Scotland
He emigrated to the United States in the early days
His grandfather and wife Mary
were also cousins
In 1868, his father came to China as a missionary from the United States
In 1874, after his parents got married
he came to China with his father and settled in Hangzhou
Two years later, their eldest son, Situ Lei Deng, was born
Situ Lei Deng and his three younger brothers
spoke Chinese with their Chinese friends
He was particularly fond of Chinese food and culture
Speaking fluent Hangzhou dialect
he later learned Nanjing dialect, Suzhou dialect, Shanghai dialect, and other dialects
At the age of 11, he returned to the United States for high school
and officially began to learn English
But his final achievement was excellent
He was admitted to Humboldt School in Sydney
Later, he was admitted to New York's St. George's School
At that time, he firmly believed in God
and decided to become a missionary
In 1904, after returning to China
he was invited to Nanjing to teach at the Jinling Shenxue Academy
He was very busy at the academy
In addition to teaching and other tasks
he also had to constantly learn Chinese
because his teaching was entirely in Chinese
Learning Chinese further deepened his understanding of Chinese traditional culture
He wrote in his memoirs
that the core of Chinese traditional culture
was that people should live in harmony with each other
His long reading not only deepened my respect for Chinese culture
but also inspired my personality
and made my faith in God more firm
His talent and excellent work
made him a well-known figure in China
In 1919, the two universities in Beijing
Huiming University and Hiephe University were preparing to merge
The U.S. South-North General Assembly
asked Stuart Leighton to be the president
and set up a new comprehensive university
At the time, he was very hesitant
because his work at the Jinling Shenxue Academy
was already well-known
and he was working on a few projects
The schools in Beijing were in a situation of hopelessness
But in the end, he felt God's guidance
and decided to accept the job
He proposed two conditions
One, to reconsider the school
Two, not to be responsible for the economy
But soon after he took office
he realized that as a principal, not considering the economy
was a delusion
Less than 100 students in the school
There were only two classrooms
No teachers, no facilities
As a principal
he had no choice but to be responsible for the economy
After he took office
he named the capital of the UK at the time of the war
as Yanjing University
According to the Bible
for the sake of truth and freedom
to serve as a school
he paid a visit to Shanxi Governor Chen Shufan
and persuaded him to sell a 240-acre plot of land
at a very low price to the school
and donate one-third of the land
as a scholarship
He paid a visit to the top-ranking person in the U.S.
for sponsorship
By 1924
Yanjing University had accumulated 2.5 million U.S. dollars
They had also bought several commercial gardens and land
The land had increased fourfold
From the very beginning, Stuart Leighton decided
to use the style of Chinese classical garden architecture
to build a school garden
The exterior design was well-defined
and the colors were vivid
The main structure was all made of concrete
with modern lighting and heating
and upper and lower water pipes
In his memoirs
he said, the buildings themselves
were the seeds of our education
preserving China's most precious cultural heritage
For many years
Yanjing's school garden
was thought to be the most beautiful school garden in the world
Stuart Leighton also hired
top-ranking scholars from all over the world
to teach at Yanjing University
It took more than ten years
Stuart Leighton turned Yanjing University
into one of the most famous universities in the world
and nurtured more than 10,000 outstanding talents for China
In 1926
Yanjing University officially moved to a new school
with a new department
It was a department related to liberal arts and science
In the early days of the school
the 4.5 movement broke out
and many students participated
But Stuart Leighton thought
this movement was
unreasonable and harshly criticized Chinese traditional culture
So he did not stop or encourage students to participate
After the 1918 Incident
and the Japanese invasion
he supported students to protest
and even led students to march on the streets
In 1929
Yanjing University was officially registered in China
and began to follow the regulations of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China
The principal began to be held by the Chinese
Stuart Leighton became the principal
At that time, the principal of the Chinese side was generally referred to as the acting principal
The first-in-command Chinese principal was Wu Leichuan
The second-in-command principal was Lu Zhiwei
In 1929
Yanjing University and Harvard University
established international cooperation
and established Harvard Yanjing Academy
This organization still exists to this day
On June 17, 1930
Stuart Leighton was awarded the
Wing-Yu Department of Literature
In 1936
when Stuart Leighton was 60 years old
the school held a grand banquet for him
186 famous figures
including the Dean of Yanjing University
President and Madam of Peking University
President of Peking Cultural Group
President of Peking Hiep Ho Hospital
and famous figures in Huxi and other cultural streets
all attended the banquet
After the outbreak of the Japanese War
the Japanese army took over the North China Sea
The Japanese authorities tried to persuade Stuart Leighton
to hire a Japanese teacher
to be appointed by the Japanese government and issue a decree
But Stuart Leighton would rather close down the school
and not willing to sacrifice Yanjing University's administrative independence
so he rejected the Japanese demand
From the 1937 Chichu Incident
to the 1941 Pearl Harbor Incident
Yanjing University decided to stay in Peking
and continue its education
The US flag was replaced
with Chinese flag and school flag
During this period
the U.S. Army sent a large number of talents to fight the war
On December 8, 1941
the Japanese army raided Pearl Harbor
and the Pacific War broke out
The next day
the Japanese army invaded Yanjing University
and arrested all American teachers
and more than a dozen Chinese teachers
Stuart Leighton was also sentenced to
three years and eight months in prison
After winning the war in 1945
Stuart Leighton took over the school
and took on the responsibility of resuming the school
But he only hired those
who refused to cooperate with the Japanese during the war
to teach
Stuart Leighton had no feelings for the CCP
In his memoir
he said on March 24, 1927
during the North China War
the Communist Party killed an outsider in Nanjing
and called it the Nanjing Incident
He met Mao Zedong at the station once
Mao told him
that many students at Yanjing University
had become his subordinates
Not long after
Stuart Leighton sent a telegram to Mao
and the students who had joined him
The telegram said
Japan had surrendered
The Communist Party had no reason to continue
such a large army
The Communist Party should learn from the British Communist Party
and live in peace with the Kuomintang
But the telegram sank into the sea
and received no response
Because of the constant conflict between the CCP and the US
in July 1946
the US government thought that Stuart Leighton
was familiar with Chinese affairs
and was familiar with the leaders of both sides of the CCP
Therefore, it appointed him as the Ambassador of the United States
He was ordered to return to Nanjing
and at the same time retained his post as the President of the United Nations
But what made Stuart Leighton regretful was
that the US Secretary of State, General McKay
had miscalculated the situation
and sold China's interests in the Asia-Pacific Treaty
and let the Soviet Red Army enter the Northeast
in an attempt to assassinate the local people
He also seized $2 billion in strategic material
and armed the CCP
Stuart Leighton wanted to make up for this loss
but failed
He wrote in his diary
During this period, the students' riots continued
They were very patriotic
so that their good motives
could be used by the Communist Party as political objectives
The rapid expansion of trade and the difficulties in life
increased this kind of dissatisfaction
At that time, I did the statistics
In Yanjing and Peking University, there were 9 out of 5 students
who hoped that China would become communist
They seemed to believe that the Communist Party government
would bring them a better life
The Communist Party's propaganda was very clever
The Communist Party's propaganda at that time
was so stupid that it was unbelievable
During this period, I encountered the biggest challenge of my life
In September 1948
Stuart Leighton returned to the United States
to fight for the last wave of military aid
But the Truman administration rejected his request
In March 1949
the CCP and the Kuomintang government had their last negotiation
The CCP asked the Kuomintang government
to hand over to them
the war criminals led by John Jackson
and to sign the surrender agreement they had drafted
It was not easy
Stuart Leighton wrote
After reading that document
I was really disappointed
Many of their leaders
were my students at Yanjing University
I hoped that the traditional culture they had learned in the past
would allow them to take civilized actions
However, it did not happen
The results of the negotiation were inevitable
After the Communist Army's great leadership
the situation was irreversible
In early 1949
the CCP took over the regime
Not long after, Stuart Leighton returned to the United States
In August, the Truman administration
published the White Paper on Sino-US Relations
stating that the failure of the Republic of China
had nothing to do with the United States
