The song Đất Phương Nam in the same name was produced in 1997 and has been loved by many generations of audiences.
The song became a classic not only because of the emotional journey of Gian Chun to find An's father,
but also because of the spirit of patriotism, the movement to fight for the liberation of the people of the South River.
Because of the profound meaning and profound influence of the novel and the TV series,
people have been eager to remake a movie with the hope of inheriting the spirit of the two classic works.
Finally, after many months of waiting and disassembling,
the 2023 version of Đất Phương Nam by director Nguyễn Quang Dũng was released.
However, this film has received a lot of negative comments from many people,
especially about making a historical mistake.
So how bad is this story?
Let's find out through this video.
Since 2017, Nguyễn Quang Dũng has imposed the idea of transferring the TV version of Đất Phương Nam in 1997
of director Nguyễn Vinh Sơn into a movie version,
a work based on the original novel Đất Dương Phương Nam by the famous writer.
However, this director had to spend 5 years to build the script and find the main actor, An.
In 2022, the film was officially released with the number of main actors at 41 and more than 3,000 actors.
In fact, the film crew invested a lot when they spent a month and a half to build the big scene of the market
as well as to re-create the whole scene of Saigon in the 1920s.
As for costumes and props, they also invested a lot.
500 to 800 sets were made for 400 actors only for the scene of the market in the West.
During the production process, 6,000 props had to be moved,
including many explosive objects to re-create the scene of the war.
Hundreds of wagons and wagons were completely redesigned to ensure realism
in the 1920s and 1930s in the South of Vietnam.
However, the remake of a classic work has created a great pressure on the entire film crew.
Each small detail was taken apart and compared to the version in 1997.
It was too classic and deeply ingrained in the minds of fans.
On October 10, 2023, the MV for the song Đất Phương Nam, the main theme song of the film,
was broadcasted all over the social network.
In fact, this is a song composed by the musician Lừa Nhất Phũ for the TV version in 1997.
It was chosen again due to its familiar lyrics and melody,
which created a lot of emotions for many generations, so it was not too surprising to be retained.
However, the MV was criticized when Trấn Thành, the main actor of the film,
wore a costume reminiscent of the gray silk of China.
Immediately, netizens exploded with thousands of criticisms,
saying that the crew did not understand why they left the costumes of other countries
and the traditional film of Vietnam.
Although the crew has clarified that the Chinese are also a long-lived ethnic group in the South
and Trấn Thành's costume is not gray silk, the public opinion is still not calm.
And that is the main reason for the strong criticism of the film Đất Giờng Phương Nam in 2023.
In the past few days, on October 13, 2023,
the film Đất Giờng Phương Nam was officially canceled.
Immediately, the issue of the history of the film was brought to light.
In the film, there are not only two main characters, An and Co,
but also some supporting characters who play certain roles in An's journey to find his father,
such as Út Lục Lâm, the flower gardener named Tiều, Di Tư Mắm and Bác Ba Phi.
Special attention was paid to the role of Út Lục Lâm, played by actor Tuấn Trần,
and Út Tiều, played by Tiến Luật Thủ Vai.
This is not the main character, but it was directed and scripted favorably for many directors,
especially Út Lục Lâm and Út Tiều are members of the Triad,
working secretly in the process of fighting against the French.
They covered up and helped An in his journey to find his father.
After that journey, An was brought into contact with many members of the group of the South,
especially the Triad and Nghĩa Hòa Đỏ.
If you look closely at these two organizations,
you will know that the Triad and the Nghĩa Hòa Đỏ are all originated from the Chinese dynasty.
The Triad originated as a rebellious dynasty, born from the reign of Emperor Kháng Hỷ.
This group operates in the form of the Triad,
with the intention of taking back Giang Sơn from the hands of the Manchus and returning it to the Chinese.
This organization was considered illegal by the government of Nha Thanh,
and was repeatedly beaten up.
However, over the centuries, the members still know how to live outside the circle of law
and develop throughout China,
as the ancestors of the Black Socialist Party, which later became the Triad.
In Vietnam, the Triad also has a branch that gathers most of the Chinese from the provinces of Phúc Kiến and Quảng Đông.
The Nghĩa Hòa Đỏ rose to power at the end of Nha Thanh's reign,
from 1899 to 1901.
At that time, China was being deeply divided by dozens of Western colonists.
The weak Nha Thanh government was no longer able to control the country.
The purpose of this group was to resist the influence of foreigners
on trade, politics, and culture.
The Nghĩa Hòa Đỏ is characterized by a strong exclusion of Christianity.
The Nghĩa Hòa Đỏ often live in monasteries,
killing the Western Christian priests of the family.
Beheading, beheading,
dozens of thousands of people, mainly foreigners, were massacred.
This movement was then shut down in China
after the alliance of eight countries,
Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the United States, Russia, Japan, and Hong Kong, collapsed.
So, what do the two movements of fighting for the Chinese have to do with Vietnam?
That is the biggest controversy of this film.
The film is considered to be the highlight of two Chinese-based organizations,
the Triad and the Nghĩa Hòa Đỏ.
It is like a flag that leads the people of the South to resist the oppression of the French colonists
and the Vietnamese invaders.
Many people think that the film only mentions the very vague role of the Vietnamese.
The organization later really mobilized the people's resistance
to represent the Vietnamese Communist Party,
creating a confrontation with the colonists.
In fact, in history,
in the Triad, there were some groups that were completely right against the French.
However, the reason for the struggle was only because they were forced to work,
so the area of struggle won the rice bowl,
not because of the spirit of patriotism,
but because of the desire for national independence.
After that, some members of this group left the Triad
and joined the National Guard as well as the Vietnamese.
Writer Van Anh wrote in the newspaper Công Luận
and commented that the film brought these two associations together
without contributing anything to the work,
which is still not accurate in history.
Academician Hà Thanh Vân in a very long article on Facebook
gave the following opinion.
In fact, the film with the story of taking the Triad as the main theme like this
has deviated from the principle.
So the best way to get the public out of criticism
is to change the name of the film to Triad in the South Pole.
She and many audiences also agree that
the main character is An,
who is not very good at acting,
but gives in to the actions of Út Lục Lâm and Ông Tiểu,
members of the Triad.
The scenes of the Triad are shown in close-up,
unintentionally making the audience misunderstand
that these are the main organizations,
the leaders of the movement to fight for national liberation.
The audience also criticized the film,
deliberately mixing up some Chinese elements
to lose the spirit of Vietnam.
In addition, the role of Mr. Ba Phi of Tran Thanh
and Mr. Vo Tam of Mai Tai Phen
was compared to the old version.
Tran Thanh is still a name that is not liked by the audience,
so it is easier to be involved in criticism.
Many audiences also came out to criticize
the responsibility for the film's censorship agency.
Why did you give a historical work like this
to reach millions of people?
Some people even said it was funny to change the name of the film
to Triad in the South Pole
because it was all about the people,
the original organizations from China,
not the people of the South.
But on the side of support,
the film itself was also modified
in 1997,
not just this version.
Both films took the setting
in the 1920s and 1930s,
while the novel took the setting
in 1945.
In the film, Viet Minh was not born yet,
because this organization was established
until 1941.
Therefore, in the film,
the Southerners fought under the flag
of the Triad,
which is easy to understand.
In addition,
Viet Minh believes that
the standard of costumes
is still not defined
in each century,
so it cannot be compared
to the costumes of the characters in the film.
The Vietnamese Film Bureau
V.Kien Thanh
is also a group of people
working in the South
and has nothing to do
with the same-name movements in China.
These names were originally borrowed
from the name of the
National Assembly of Vietnam
and the name of the
National Assembly of Vietnam.
This change is said
to be unimaginative
and misleading to foreign organizations.
Objectively,
not a few audiences
appreciate the hard work
of building the real setting
of the film.
The music is new,
full of excitement,
and the atmosphere
of the South.
The spirit of patriotism
is still there.
