And after having been in the Fortuna Falls, which you have seen are spectacular,
it is very worth it. We have now come to the National Park of the Arenal Volcano,
where the volcano itself is located, which cannot be climbed to the top because it is a
volcano that is active, from time to time it erupts. And in fact, one of the last ones
it did, it created some lava rivers that have been creating the paths through which
you can now walk, which are the ones we have started to walk now.
There are several along the entire volcano, which only make more or less simple paths,
they do not have much change in height, in elevation, because what they do is surround the volcano
and give you different perspectives of what it is. The parking lot is right next door,
in fact you can park the car, it costs about 16 dollars per person, you leave the car and it is
the entrance to the National Park, and from there you can start the paths that you
want the most. They are quite short, 2 or 3 kilometers, the longest ones.
In some of these paths, like the one we were doing now, you can see the views of
what the volcano is on one side and on the other side the lake of the Arenal, and it is difficult to see it
completely clear. In fact, there are people who have been here for several days and cannot
see the whole mountain without clouds, so do not be frustrated if that is what happens to you,
because it is the most likely. We are now going through the same thing, it seems that it moves a
little bit, the sky clears a lot, but the part of the cone is quite trapped,
it is difficult for it to show, it is a shame, but hey, it is also not bad with the clouds and we will see
if throughout the days that we are going to be here, we have the opportunity, but
well, as we are going to be moving a lot, we will not be able to be so aware of how it
shows, but hey, simply what are the paths, the walks are already worth it,
you can see a lot of different things, centenary trees, a lot of vegetation, the roads
too, there are even rivers of what was lava in its day, which generated these paths, and for example
there is one that is a few hundred meters, which was formed in 92, in one of the last eruptions
most important that there was in the area, and one of the most shocking that there was, that most remembered,
was in 68, which created a bestial explosion, in which 90 people from the
surrounding towns died, it destroyed many crops and towns that, well, did a lot of damage,
but it also created three additional craters, which has made the national park that we have today
We have reached one of the centenary trees that I was telling you about, this one in particular is a
400-year-old fig tree, and it is spectacular, look at it, no, this is not, but it is this one here,
which is behind me, I don't know if you can see it, I don't think you can see all the magnitude, but hey, it is a
giant tree, not only the roots, which I don't know how far they will get, but let's imagine that it is this,
it can easily be seven meters, what the roots are, and on top of that, a giant
cluster, that is, this has to suck one of the nutrients of the earth, spectacular, it has to leave the volcano dry.
Before or after starting the trails, an option that you have is to come here to the viewpoint,
which is as you pass the parking lot, where once you enter the national park, you go to the bottom,
about 500 meters, and you can park the car and see the views of the volcano, or well, come walking,
as you see, and then you can start the trails, or come later, it depends on how you see the
conditions of the volcano, whether it clears or not, because you are looking at when it may be better for you,
we have caught it cloudy all the time, there have been times when it has made
small clouds of clearing, but the cloud is very involved in the volcano, so it is complicated,
and that, the trails that you have here are mainly those that are called the volcano sector,
for that reason, because they are around the volcano, to see how the cone from different points,
and then you have other trails that are called the peninsula sector, whose main objective is to see
more the views of the sand lake, which would be on the other side, where you can do a lot of
activities, such as going on foot, boat rides, etc., if you feel like it, and you have more time to
explore everything that is this area.
