Nymphes des bois, also known as La Déploration de Johannes Ockeghem, is a lament composed by Josquin des Prez on the occasion of the death of his predecessor Johannes Ockeghem in February 1497. The piece, based on a poem by Jean Molinet and including the funeral text Requiem Aeternam as a cantus firmus, is in five voices. In the first of its two parts Josquin cleverly mimics the contrapuntal style of Ockeghem.
This chanson is one of Josquin's best-known works, and often considered one of the most haunting and moving memorial works ever penned.

Based on the original score of 'Nymphes des Bois' by Josquin des Prez I ventured into an adaptation of this masterpiece by transposing (and adding) to the 5 voices different instruments and synthesizers.

The original remains without a doubt immensely far better, but the immersive sharing of des Prez’s emotions during the exercise was and remains mine :-)

Nymphes des bois, les forestz vous amerez
Ou longuement vous n'aurés demourez,
Pour scavoir d'elle que feites pensées
En ces broussailles où vous vous cachez,
Femmes d'honneur en sa grâce mettez,
Bien aie coeur que ces faulx ne vous tentent;
Vous les connoistrez en bien peu d'heure,
Ne pourront pas en fin vous deffier.
Douce pitié tousjours leur a monstré
L'innocence de filles aussi nettes;
Tousjours leur faicts ont elles prouvez
Vraye chère et pensee et parollette.
Mais vous non plus, si que tout l'autre gent,
Si bien ne scavez à bien eloigner
Tout leur parler, que non trop fréquement
Ne vous vienne d'eulx convier les gens.
La feminite doit mieulx aymez
De sentir grevé ou desreglez faire;
Mais pour amours, plustost en coeur changer,
Qu'on vueille apres de nuire estre contraintes.
La qui le faict, n'est pas parachevé
En ce qu'il sent ne il ne peut conclurre;
Pour estre preuves en un bon endroit mis,
La vraye amour n'y sentir ne se fault.

Encores plus, si vos désirs devore
Le doux penser, ou longuement atendre
L'espérance pour voir qui mieux l'adore;
Mais plus sçavez pourtant le beau entendre,
Plus en tesmoigne à telle amour entendre
La chere estonne et la révérence.
Vous n'aymez pas tout ce qui a demeure,
En fin trop tard aimer sçavez telle
Qui a servy sous espérance;
En fin viendra qui tôt s'aymera.
