Well, tonight, family and friends are keeping a close watch on the health status of Olympic
champion and Houston sports legend Mary Lou Retton.
Her daughter says she is in intensive care, fighting for her life.
Our Matt Musil joining us now, and Matty, you know, what's the latest?
What have you heard?
Well, still not a lot of information coming out on Mary Lou's condition, but I was interested
to see today that the fundraising efforts headed up by her daughters has already raised
over $250,000 to go towards Mary Lou's medical bills.
And Linda McInville, Mattress Max's wife, donated $50,000 on a spotfund.com account.
Linda and Jim McInville were big-time supporters of the Caroli Gym when Mary Lou was a part
of it back in the 80s.
I was asked to come on and give a few thoughts about Mary Lou, and I can easily do that.
I met her when she moved here from West Virginia, and I distinctly remember the fire that she
brought to the Caroli Gym when she arrived.
Her dad was a standout basketball player at the University of West Virginia, where
he and his Hall of Fame teammate Jerry West led the Mountaineers to the NCAA championship
game back in 1959.
Mary Lou, so she came from an athletic family.
Now, before the start of the 1984 Olympics, when I was out in L.A. with Mary Lou, I asked
her about the big-time pressure that she would be under.
Ignore the press and TV, because it can go to your head, and you've just got to ignore
it and do your own thing, you know, work hard and just really, you know, block it out.
It takes experience, though.
You just have to learn to deal with that kind of stuff.
Matter of factly, that's how Mary Lou always was, just to learn how to deal with that stuff.
Now she's dealing with something much worse than just a tough competition.
As you can tell from that video, Mary Lou and I are much younger back in the day.
The question remains now, why hasn't the U.S. Gymnastics Federation or the U.S. Olympic
Committee, why don't they have a health plan?
That's a big question that I have at this point.
And certainly, everybody is hoping the best for Mary Lou, and of course, she and her family
are in her prayers.
Rekha and Ron?
Yeah, that caught a lot of people by surprise, hearing that she did not have health insurance.
That was really hard to hear.
Hope she pulls through, Maddie.
We're really hoping for a full recovery for her.
Yeah.
You bet.
She's a great person.
She was great when I first met her as a teenager, and she's still a great person.
All right, we're praying for her.
Thank you so much, Matt.
