Only Murders in the Building co-creator and executive producer John Hoffman discusses whether the show will change its setting to Los Angeles.
Only Murders in the Building co-creator and executive producer John Hoffman
discusses whether the show will move to Los Angeles after that season 3 finale tease.
Warning, full spoilers ahead for the finale of Only Murders in the Building season 3.
You've been warned.
In the last episode, Taubert and Loretta both reveal that they're moving to LA
as they've received job opportunities there.
In a response that suggests Only Murders may be widening its scope,
main characters Mabel and Oliver reply that they'll be visiting LA to support their respective romantic partners.
In comments to TVLine, Hoffman addressed whether the already renewed Only Murders season 4
will leave New York behind for a new setting.
I love New York. The characters, the richness, the depth is endless. And it's a New York show.
But I don't want to be afraid of things that make you go, what? Where are we? Where are they now?
I think you have to do that so it doesn't feel too insular.
Keeps them interested.
There is our apartment building. And much like how we want to get out and be in New York as much as possible,
I think you also have to remember this trio and the potential for whatever would be happening in their lives
that might lead them to go away for some reason.
The Only Murders season 3 ending offers up a deadly reason for the show to expand in its last scene,
when Jane Lynch's Sazh is taken out by a sniper.
No!
But given that Sazh is the stunt double for Charles, the question seems to be whether Charles was the intended target.
That adds a potential element of danger to Only Murders season 4.
And it also might mean that Charles has the perfect excuse to join Mabel and Oliver in LA,
avoiding the sniper who could be out to get him.
Wait, wait, wait. You guys can't leave me here alone.
Regardless of how next season's murder mystery shakes out,
it would be good for the show to leave New York behind.
Or at least partially.
In its third outing, Only Murders obviously strained to bring back familiar faces,
even when it didn't add to the story and felt more like a habit.
More than bringing in famous guests, switching up the location could allow the comedy to sharpen up.
