was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dolingrig, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission
of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years
War. Its design, shape and construction make Bodium Castle a textbook example of a strongly
defended medieval castle, with sufficient internal structure remaining to indicate it
was a state-of-the-art construction in terms of both defence and accommodation.
Despite its imposing appearance, Bodium Castle never saw significant military action.
Instead, it served as a symbol of power and prestige for the Dolingrig family.
Sir Edward Dolingrig was one of many Englishmen who travelled to France to seek their fortune
as mercenaries who fought for the highest bidder. His military career brought him prestige and
wealth. From 1379 to 1388, Dolingrig was a knight of the shire for Sussex and one of the most
influential people in the county. He and his wife Elizabeth lived in a turbulent age, with
protests and social upheaval caused by the Black Death and royal disputes that led to the Wars of
the Roses. Possession of Bodium Castle passed through several generations of Dolingrigs,
until their line became extinct, when the castle passed by marriage to the Leupner family.
In the 16th century, Bodium Castle fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned.
It underwent a restoration in the 19th century by architect Sir John Aldred Scott,
who carefully preserved its medieval features while adding some Victorian elements.
Today, Bodium Castle stands as a remarkable testament to medieval architecture and is
considered one of the most picturesque castles in England. You can explore the castle's well-preserved
interiors, venture into the towers and discover the intricate woodwork and grand halls.
Each room tells a story, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who once inhabited these walls.
Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking an
unforgettable adventure, Bodium Castle awaits your visit. Come and uncover the secrets of this
magnificent fortress, and let the echoes of the past guide you on a remarkable journey through
