The Chiesa di Santa Maria Lauretana the church in Sonogno. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Loreto, who is believed to have lived in the Holy House of Nazareth, where she received the Annunciation. The church was built between 1852 and 1854, replacing an older one that dated back to the 15th century. The only remaining part of the original church is the bell tower, which was built in 1782. The church has a neoclassical style, with a simple facade and a dome. The interior is decorated with frescoes by Cherubino Pata, a local painter, depicting the four Evangelists, the Nativity, and the Annunciation. The church also has a wooden choir and benches by Giuseppe Sonognini, and a carved wooden Via Crucis from Ortisei. The church is a place of pilgrimage and devotion for the people of Sonogno and the Verzasca valley.
Sonogno was first mentioned in 1200 as Sornono and was part of the Vicinanza of Verzasca during the Middle Ages. From 1395 to 1843, it formed a single community with Frasco. It was part of the parish of Vogorno until 1519, when it formed a parish with Frasco. It formed an independent parish in 1734. The local economy was based mostly on grazing. During the summer, the cattle grazed in the high alpine pastures, and in the winter, the cows were moved to their winter pastures in Magadino. Due to limited jobs, many of the residents emigrated, and after about 1850, many went overseas. The Museum of Verzasca was built in Sonogno in 1974.
