In our latest movie review, we dissect "The Creator," a film that regrettably proved to be disappointingly predictable, despite the allure of its clickbait trailers. Join us as we explore the futuristic clash between humans and AI, following ex-special forces agent Joshua's mission to confront the elusive Creator. However, as the story unfolds, the film's lack of surprises becomes evident, with a world-ending AI in the form of a child that falls far short of expectations. Discover why this predictability left us yearning for more in our candid and critical review.
The Artificial Intelligence, and they weren't. They were dumb, stupid robots.
They were so dumb. Anyway, shut me up. I'm telling you.
Maybe they used AI for Riders because it was garbage.
I thought that was the irony of it. It looked like it was written by AI.
No, it's not a spoiler because I'm telling everybody, do not watch this movie.
Don't waste your time. Don't go to it.
Hello and welcome to The Real Generation Gap. My name is Shane Schuldmeier.
And I'm Fred Sottoli.
And today we're reviewing The Creator.
I don't know about you, but I'm sick of clickbait.
The Creator was advertised to be a movie about artificial intelligence.
The term AI was used all throughout the movie to describe the entity
that I could not determine whether that entity was the antagonist or the protagonist.
It's a real rating failure.
AI is a hot topic in our day and age. I wanted to see a clever movie about it.
I was robbed.
I've seen movies I didn't like, but at least the movie was honestly represented.
It owed me nothing.
I feel that The Creator not only owes me a cash refund,
but actually owes me two hours of life.
Misrepresentation is a contract crime.
This hoax of an AI movie with no AI in it was nothing but a sham.
So, Fred, we've been talking about The Creator for months now.
We saw our trailer months ago, and we were like,
oh, when that comes out, we're going to review that.
We're going to review that.
And it came out. Here it is.
What's your initial thoughts?
I was so excited to go there.
I went as soon as I possibly could.
It was a little bit tough last week logistically,
but I managed to squeeze it in and really excited to do so.
And I got in there, and it was a movie.
It started out like a movie.
There was action.
There was the guy and his wife,
and I'm trying to learn about the characters and everything.
But what it turned out to be was a slave revolt movie.
And the other aspect that it was was it was a messiah movie.
It had no artificial intelligence aspects in it whatsoever.
But both groups called themselves or called the other group the AI,
the artificial intelligence.
And they weren't.
They were dumb, stupid robots.
They were so dumb.
Anyway, shut me up.
I was so excited for this movie.
And I was just like you.
I was hoping it was going to be thought provoking.
It was going to challenge what I think of AI or something.
Put me and get me invested in the world of artificial intelligence.
And like you said, it wasn't about really artificial intelligence.
It was about a robot revolt, slave revolt movie.
It was a really beautiful action movie.
Don't get me wrong.
It was stunning.
Visually, it was really cool.
The weapons were cool.
The action was really cool.
The robots themselves looked cool.
I liked that they had the face and the hollow back of their heads and everything.
But the story was horrible.
Yeah, the prop guys did a great job.
Yeah, yeah.
You can tell where all the money went, right?
I didn't even think of it that way.
I'm sure this was a billion dollar movie or a couple million, whatever it was.
I'm sure it was expensive movie.
And they needed maybe they used AI for writers.
That's exactly what I said.
Because it was garbage.
Yeah, I thought that was the irony of it.
It looked like it was written by AI.
Yeah.
Honestly, in the first five minutes, I called the whole movie.
I knew exactly what was going to happen.
I'm not going to give any spoilers.
But in the first five minutes, I knew exactly what was going to happen.
I knew who everyone was.
I knew what the character development was going to be.
I knew who the bad guy was.
And I knew how it was going to end.
And I was like 99.5% right.
Right.
And there was no complexity.
There was no complexity.
That first impression you got was the whole story.
It didn't have like a twist in the middle.
And now some other thing that you hadn't considered.
And all the things like AI, you would think would have a unique strategy.
Other than what desperate slaves running from the master would do.
There was nothing cool.
So prior to this movie, I never even really thought about this.
But my understanding of AI was always it's going to be faster, smarter, stronger.
A million times better than any human can operate.
By the time I think of a sentence, it's already written out a thousand, you know.
Right.
And sent out to everybody.
Yeah, exactly.
Sent out, they could communicate with each other quicker than I can communicate
with you speaking words.
They think simultaneously.
This is not what the movie was.
No.
It was robots with personalities that don't really operate any better than a human.
And they weren't endearing.
No, they weren't.
I thought, you know, the AI, right?
I watched this.
I'm a Star Trek fan.
I'm like, the Borg would totally annihilate it.
The Borg would have wiped this planet out in minutes.
They would have assimilated everything and that would have been it.
Yeah.
But there was nothing there like that.
And in addition to virtually no writing, there was no like even a paragraph in there
that you went like, well, that's at least that's poetic or thought provoking.
But it never happened.
And to make matters worse, I didn't care about the characters.
I didn't care about the characters too much either.
The main actor, I can't think of his name off the top of my head.
But he was also in a movie called Tenet, which was like a sci-fi film.
And I was really excited.
I think that was a Christopher Nolan film.
And I was really excited.
And you're good about this.
Yeah, I was really excited for that film, too.
And that was another letdown.
John David Washington.
And I'm pretty sure that was him.
But yeah, Tenet was another letdown.
So I don't know.
Maybe this actor is a thing.
But honestly, I think it was more of the script.
Yeah.
Like you said, the characters, I wasn't invested.
We had the little girl.
I saw your notes.
You said you couldn't even tell it was a little girl.
No.
If you didn't tell me, there was no gender to that person.
It was just a tiny person with a computer on the back of her head.
And that didn't make me love her.
And then she didn't do...
Like, I thought that my presupposition from the previews and everything
was she was going to do some really badass thing.
Crazy, yeah.
She was going to be doing flips with a sword or something.
Yeah.
No, not even with a sword, just an intelligence thing.
Like, figure out a strategy and put everybody in a box.
And nobody could make a move.
And she was 10 steps ahead of him, like you said, faster and smarter and everything.
No, no.
She was just a confused kid trying to get through life.
And actually, in fact, she had to be taken care of the whole time.
And she's supposed to be the super weapon.
Right.
The super weapon.
I mean, that's not really a spoiler.
And then the super weapon was Jive, too.
The big spaceship thing with the blue light.
Oh, the one the humans have, yeah.
Yeah.
Like, that blue light looked cool.
But, you know, I put in these notes, I said, you know,
that was a good looking visual effect.
But a kaleidoscope is interesting, too.
And do you know what that is?
I do know what a kaleidoscope is.
Thank you very much.
I wondered about that.
But yeah, it was cool to see that thing.
Like, I consider it maybe like it was a tracking device.
That's how they look for you.
Yeah, I thought it...
That's what I thought.
They were outrunning it.
The people were like, there's the big blue light.
We got to run over there.
Yeah.
So why would you expose what you're doing?
I thought it was like scanning them like, oh, that's a robot.
That's a robot.
That's a human.
Don't get the human.
But no, it had nothing to do with that.
Nothing at all.
Yeah, that's the big blue light right there.
Yeah.
Does nothing.
Means nothing.
Has nothing to do with the development of the story.
And then the super weapon, it's just like an Independence Day
when the guy flies the spaceship up into the...
Yeah.
He flies the F-14 Tomcat up into the spaceship and blows it up.
You know, I'm back.
Yeah, yeah, I love that.
The same thing happened here.
Just a run of the mill, you know, they shot it down.
Yeah, and they couldn't do that.
The whole, like, yeah.
No, it's not a spoiler because I'm telling everybody,
do not watch this movie.
Don't waste your time.
Don't go to it.
It's really...
And I never do this.
Yeah.
I find some...
You do.
You typically like, I enjoyed it, you know?
Right.
Maybe not my thing, but maybe it's your thing.
This is nobody's thing.
And the flabbergasting part of that is I read reviews where people were like,
this is a film that will go down in history for the ages.
This film's not gonna last 30 days.
In 30 days, this will be gone.
Never to be seen again.
There's gonna be no cult following, no sequel.
Yeah, like, what was your emotions leaving the movie?
Were you mad?
Well, actually...
Like during the movie, were you being pissed off or like...
Yes, yeah, I really was.
I was like, come on!
You know, I like to finish people's sentences, right?
So I'm watching the scene like, okay, open the airlock, open the airlock, open the airlock.
He's not opening the airlock.
Please open the airlock.
Oh, you're not gonna open the airlock.
Forget the airlock.
Okay.
But I got two good things to say.
I have two good things to say about this.
For one thing, the soundtrack was by Hans Zimmer.
Okay.
And I'm a big fan of Hans Zimmer.
You're pretty good at following actors.
I'm pretty good at following the musicians.
I know Hans Zimmer for sure.
Right.
Oh, he's made so many classics.
And then for no particular reason, twice during the movie, they played Claire de Lune, which is...
And I have no idea what that is.
A beautiful piano piece by Claude Debussy.
It's like 100 years old.
Okay.
And it's really one of my favorite beautiful classical piano pieces.
It's impressionistic piano.
Okay.
Claire de Lune.
It means moonlight.
Okay.
And I guess in like Czech or wherever, whatever, he was from one of those places.
And it's such a beautiful piece.
And it soothed the savage breast.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
It's like, oh, Claire de Lune.
Well, I'm always good with that.
Distracted you a little bit from how much you disliked the movie.
And then when the piece was over, it was like, oh, we're back to this again.
A more inexplicable behavior.
Yeah.
Oh, now there's a great big explosion for no particular reason.
Wow.
I got to get out of here.
And I just left.
And the setting, it was the most beautiful theater ever.
And it was really a cool whole story.
Going to it, getting there, and everything like that.
And the movie was just a letdown.
I mean, you like Dune.
I love Dune.
Dune's awesome.
I was like ready for something at least that good, but now even better.
Sucked me into the sci-fi world.
I mean, Dune was written like in what?
Like 1970 or something.
Now it took them a couple decades to make the movie because you really needed the technology.
But yeah, I wanted to really be impressed with ideas that I couldn't even think of.
I figure if you're writing an AI movie, like if I had written this movie,
I would never show it to anybody.
Like the script, like, well, that's not good.
I can't go around Hollywood showing people this.
This is not even, there's nothing in it that's unique or anything.
So to heck with that, to heck with it, the creator.
So I was looking at your notes, and I was kind of thinking about my perspective.
And I was thinking maybe we had the wrong idea about AI going into this movie.
Because technically, you know, it is artificial intelligence.
No one ever said it had to be smart or smarter than humans.
That's the definition of intelligence.
I guess so.
But what I'm saying is it's artificial.
These robots aren't real.
Like they keep saying throughout the movie, it's just code.
It's just code.
Remember?
Yes.
Anytime they kill a robot and they feel bad, like it's just code.
Yeah.
He didn't feel any pain.
It's just code.
So I was thinking, you know, maybe we were expecting too much out of an AI movie.
And maybe we should have...
They owe me.
You're not backing down, huh?
Trying to play devil's advocate here.
I appreciate that.
I look for that too.
I mean, if you like lots of shooting, lots of explosions and bright lights and stuff like that,
like an infant would in a crib looking up at bright colors or something, then yeah, that's fine.
But there was nothing original, nothing clever.
Yeah, I think the...
And I mean nothing.
I think what it was mostly trying to do is give a human-like aspect to robots.
I think that's what its main intention was.
And even that, I didn't really feel too much, you know?
The Messiah child was supposed to have been created by its mother.
Yeah.
Right?
So she was supposed to have created that without her husband knowing about it.
Can you imagine the amount of technology or laboratory space
or something you would have to be...
Alter a child without that child surgically?
Yeah.
I was like, no!
Well, that's not actually what it was.
It was...
Did you see?
It was a lot of foreshadowing.
There was a scene where they put like,
offer your likeness, donate your likeness.
Yes.
So it wasn't actually their child.
The child died in the acts in the beginning.
Right.
It was the likeness of the embryo where they made that into the kid.
Right.
This guy was married to a girl who had the capability to do that,
but he did not know that.
Yes.
Come on.
Yeah.
Come on.
There's no spoilers for this.
Nobody's going.
Like I said, I called it.
I knew it was coming.
I knew I was like, oh yeah, that's...
The Messiah is his kid.
I knew right off the beginning.
I was like, that's his kid.
Yeah.
I just...
The last film that outraged me this much,
I won't say what it is because it has fans
and I don't want to hear from them.
Okay.
But yeah, this was not worth going to.
And I rate it a one.
And the reason I give it a one and not a none
is because it had music by...
I'll give it a two.
Okay.
It had music by Hans Zimmer, 12 pieces by Hans Zimmer.
Yeah.
And Clair de Lune played twice.
Yeah.
So I'll give this one a two.
I don't have too much more to say about it.
If you do, by all means.
Honestly, there's not a lot to say about it.
I like to not know what's happening.
I like to be invested.
I like to not be thinking that I'm watching a movie
when I watch a movie.
Right.
This whole time, I was able to think about like,
this sucks, this sucks.
Like, I want to be invested
and nothing sucked me in in this movie.
The action was cool.
Yeah, I can go watch an Avengers movie
if I want to watch cool action.
I can watch Star Wars or whatever.
Right.
Mission Impossible.
Yeah.
Mission Impossible.
I love Mission Impossible.
Tom Cruise is an American patriot, a hero.
Actually, he's a Scientologist.
So that's weird.
But anyways, this movie did not suck me in at all.
The characters were lame,
but I think it was still pretty.
I think it was visually, I think it was very pretty.
That's true.
And I like seeing actors' faces with the robots.
I thought that was pretty cool.
I think I'm going to give it a five.
Okay, fair enough.
I'm going to give it a five.
It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen.
I've seen worse movies.
It was the second worst thing.
But I've also never seen...
Yeah, I've also seen a lot better movies.
So I would give it a five.
And like you said, there's not much to say about it.
There didn't provoke any thought,
any things for me to talk about with you, really.
In other reviews, I said, I get sucked into the magic.
I believe that the actors are not even actors.
That's really the character, that kind of thing.
I really believe it.
I thought Rocky was a boxer.
Yeah.
That's how I feel.
I'd love to be that.
I'd love to be innocent.
When you see a magician,
you don't want to know how they did the trick.
You want to see the magic.
A tiger appeared out of nowhere.
That's amazing.
That's it.
That's what you want.
But this thing, no.
Yeah.
So you give it a two, you said?
I'm going to give it a two.
And I said five.
Well, I guess that's a disappointing review of the creator.
Right.
Well, guys, thank you for watching The Real Generation Gap.
I'm Shane Schuldmeier.
And I am Fred Sotoa.
And this has been nothing but a disappointment.
