Senator Meghan Markle or even President Meghan Markle. Absurd, I know, but if well-placed rumours are to be believed, Meghan Markle could be laying the foundations for a political career in the United States. From actress to duchess, media personality and now possibly senator, Sky News All Stars Caleb Bond, Esther Krakue and Caroline De Russo take a deep dive into Meghan Markle’s shock career move and ask if her political aspirations could ever come to fruition.
Senator Meghan Markle, or even President Meghan Markle.
Absurd, I know, but if well-placed rumours are to be believed,
Meghan Markle could be laying the foundations for a political career in the United States.
From actress to duchess, media personality, and now possibly senator,
Sky News All-Stars Kayla Bond, Esther Krakow, and Caroline DeRusso
take a deep dive into Meghan Markle's shock career move
and ask if her political aspirations could ever come to fruition.
Meghan Markle has lived many lives.
From her early days as a Hollywood actress, to her fairytale romance and foray into royalty,
to a lucrative whirlwind media career, and now, stepping into a possible political career,
Meghan Markle isn't leaving the spotlight anytime soon.
Meghan Markle's political aspirations began way back in 2020,
when she and Prince Harry had a phone conversation with California Governor Gavin Newsom
about the vacant position left by Kamala Harris
after she was elevated to be Joe Biden's running mate in the election.
Meghan Markle was overlooked for that opportunity, but it did not deter her political aspirations.
California Senator Dianne Feinstein's passing at age 90
left a vacant Senate spot, which Gavin Newsom needed to fill at the end of last week.
Meghan Markle swiftly launched into action and began networking with key figures
in the Democratic Party, according to Sky News All-Star Kayla Bond.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, apparently she was being battered around
as a possible replacement for the late Californian Senator Dianne Feinstein,
who died with 13 months remaining in her term.
A senior UK Labor Party source confirmed to the Mail on Sunday that she'd been networking
with senior Dems to build a grassroots campaign for her political ambitions.
She even had a Zoom call for an hour with Governor Gavin Newsom.
Despite Meghan Markle's A-list connections,
she was not chosen for the Senator spot by Gavin Newsom, says Sky News All-Star Caroline DeRusso.
Gavin Newsom, who's the Governor, gets to captains pick that spot,
understand that he had a Zoom call with Meghan, but she wasn't ultimately chosen.
Although Newsom wanted a black woman, he did choose a lady by the name of Lafonza Butler, I believe.
Royal commentator Lady C has revealed Markle didn't take the news well at all,
with Gavin Newsom forced to block her number after she refused to stop calling him.
He has given instructions that her calls are not to be received and not to be passed on to him,
and he has personally blocked her from his mobile phone.
And although Meghan Markle missed out on the Senator spot this time,
Sky News All-Star Esther Kraku says it's not far-fetched
that Meghan Markle will continue her push for a political career.
Newsom, but he decided to go with someone else.
Ultimately, we know that Meghan has always been quite politically active,
even before she entered the royal family,
and I could probably prescribe all her political beliefs on the back of a stamp.
But the reality is, it's not far-fetched to assume that she would
eye a political career at some point in the future.
Now, when in the future is actually the question here,
because she still does have very young children,
and she might want to focus more on raising them as opposed to entering politics.
But even Michelle Obama, who was the former First Lady of the US,
she's always been thrown in the mix as a political hopeful.
So someone like Meghan Markle, who has very strong views,
who's very adamant that she wants to see more women in positions of power,
that's not something that I would
really be surprised if she actually chose to pursue that.
Esther Kraku also says that becoming a politician in the US
after being a public figure in a different field is a very common thing to do,
which could make Markle's dream a reality after all.
I think you're probably right there.
And I think when you look at the American political landscape,
it's almost like a soap opera in itself.
So I think she'd probably fit in really well.
Yes, definitely.
I mean, there's so many people that, you know, become famous in the US
for whatever reason and then end up running for office
because the name recognition is so powerful.
You have, you know, from surgeons to business people
to former actors and actresses.
It really is a melting pot in terms of
who can actually put their name in the running.
And it's not something that would really surprise me,
given Meghan Markle's keenness to actually, you know, influence a conversation.
I don't know if you remember a few years ago during the 2020 election,
that video that she and Harry released encouraging people to vote for love,
which was a thinly veiled request to not vote for Donald Trump.
And they ended up succeeding on that front.
But the reality is, you know,
Meghan and Harry have always seen themselves as some sort of power couple
and their mission is to do good.
And what other avenue, what better avenue to do good
than to actually, you know, influence public policy?
Now, whether she'll actually get very far in that quest
is a completely different story.
You know, the American public have been cooling
towards the Sussexes for a while now.
They've kind of gotten over the whole royal family saga.
So it'll be interesting to see what she offers.
I suspect it will be, you know, a very, very feminist driven
sort of political campaign.
But, you know, we'll have to see even if she does,
to see whether she actually does even end up taking that step in the first place.
Sky News all-star Calvin Robinson says
regardless of Meghan Markle's political success,
both her and Prince Harry need to find new roles
following the breakdown of the relationship with the royal family
and subsequent media venture failures.
I think Harry and Meghan need to find new roles for themselves.
She obviously hasn't done much acting since they got married,
but neither of them have really managed to produce any content
or fulfil the commitments that they've made so far
in their podcasts, in their Netflix series,
in their book deals.
They're running out of ideas,
and there's only so much they can badmouth the royal family
before we all get bored of that.
So I think perhaps they need to find a life outside of fame.
If they're not working royals,
they don't really need to be going to sporting events
and that kind of thing and showing themselves off.
If they could find something else to do,
that would be much better for them and for their family.
