The deer horn
by Josef Heydrich
Once upon a time there was a poor, poor boy.
He had inherited a tiny deer horn from his mother when she died.
And that was all his wealth.
Since he had neither a father nor a mother to leave,
he thought the world was big and beautiful.
He wanted to look around a little.
So he took his deer horn and walked away.
Not long after, he met an old man with a broad hat and a gray coat.
He looked so friendly.
God bless you, old grandfather, said the boy.
Thank you, said the man.
Where are you going?
On a journey, said the boy.
And I carry all my wealth with me.
This is a deer horn.
Won't I be stolen?
The poor boy's husband moaned, and he said,
Don't worry, my child.
You will lose it, but you will win it.
In the evening, the boy returned to a village,
knocked on a farmer's door and asked for hostages.
As he went to sleep, he put his deer horn on the window and said to the wild man,
This is all my wealth.
Won't I be stolen?
Sleep well, my son.
There shall be no harm to you in my house.
In the morning, when the sun shone through the window,
the deer horn shone,
and the house rooster, who stood in the yard and looked for grain,
saw it, flew there and picked it up.
Just then the boy woke up and looked at the deer on the window,
how he swallowed his deer horn.
He began to cry and complain.
The farmer comforted him and said,
The deer is yours.
He ate the deer.
Now the boy was happy, took the deer and walked on.
In the evening, he returned to another village to a farmer and asked for hostages.
He said,
This is all my wealth.
Won't I be stolen?
Sleep well, my son.
said the wild man.
There shall be no harm to you in my house.
