The Swan Lady
by Josef Heytrich
A poor woman had a son.
He was now big and strong and wanted to go into the wild to earn some money.
He owed a man for a year and was supposed to take care of his sheep.
When he was on the field at harvest time,
he saw a beautiful white bird in the cornfield.
He ran to catch him.
The bird, however, got up slowly and flew into a forest.
The boy always ran after him, but it was in vain.
He couldn't reach him.
He wanted to turn around, but he didn't know how to find his way out of the forest.
It was already getting dark.
He saw a light in the distance.
He set off and came to a castle.
An old man was sitting by the fire and cooking a soup.
The boy looked around and told the old man how he got into the forest.
If you serve me faithfully for a year, I will help you to get the bird.
The boy agreed to get the bird.
The next morning the old man said,
Now I'm going out and will return home late in the evening.
You take care here.
You have all the keys.
You can go into every room.
Just not into the last one.
The boy followed exactly the commandment
and when the old man returned home in the evening,
he was satisfied with him.
So it happened to the other and all the following days,
that the old man went out and gave the boy the name assignment.
For a long time, the boy didn't even think about the forbidden room.
But in the last week of the year,
he got curious.
You've been here all year
and you're going to leave soon and you shouldn't know what treasures are there.
He said to himself and it didn't leave him any peace.
On the last day, he went to the door and didn't want to.
Finally, he put the key in and opened it.
There was a big hall and in the middle a blue pond
and above it the free sky.
But in the pond there were three beautiful swan young women who were bathing.
Barely had they seen the boy,
they all flew away like white swans.
Full of fear, the boy returned and had no peace.
When the old man came home,
he fell down right in front of him and said,
Sir, punish me, I have transgressed your commandment.
The old man said kindly,
Because you have admitted your mistake and regret it,
I want to forgive you.
But you have to be faithful for another year, do you want to have the bird?
The boy felt like a stone from his heart.
I would like to give it to you.
And from then on, the curiosity had no more power over him.
When the year was over, the old man stepped up to him and said,
Now follow me.
He led him into the forbidden room.
There were the three beautiful young women and they were bathing.
But soon they turned into white swans,
climbed up and flew away.
The old man asked the boy which one he liked best.
The youngest, he said.
Well, go to that room this evening.
There you will find three boxes under the bed.
Bring the one in the corner to me.
The boy could hardly wait for the evening.
Then he hurried there and brought it.
So, take the box now and go home with it.
The chosen young woman will follow you on your feet.
But don't look behind you until you have reached home.
Then you can hold a wedding with the young woman at your mother's.
But get the box like an apple to your eye.
And don't give in and give it to your bride.
As much as she begs you, otherwise you will lose her forever.
The boy promised to do everything like that.
The first thing was easy for him.
He didn't look back, even if he wanted to.
Because he had been looking forward to it.
And that's what he thought now.
When he was finally home with his mother,
he turned around quickly and saw the young woman.
He fell on her neck and kissed her.
But she was wearing a snow-white dress
and was as beautiful as the bright day.
And the boy couldn't get enough of her.
Then the engagement was held and the boy was very happy.
But the young woman was sad and depressed.
The boy made every possible effort to cheer her up,
but in vain.
Oh, what would I do if I saw you happy now,
he said last.
So give me my beautiful clothes, which are in the box.
The boy was horrified.
How he had promised so indifferently and foolishly,
what should lead to his misfortune.
He hesitated for a long time, for a long time.
Finally, the loyalty and excessive love for his bride won.
He persuaded and comforted himself, too.
That won't be her death right away, he said to himself.
And she shouldn't be able to leave me either.
Because he carefully closed all the doors and windows.
As soon as he had opened the box
and hastily grabbed her dress and threw it around,
she was like a swan
and flew out through the oven to the chimney.
There the boy felt an infinite pain.
He ran out,
saw the bird
and hurried into the forest to the old man
and complained to him of his grief.
Isn't she here, he said last.
So tell me where I can find her.
I want to look for her until the end of the world,
because I love her too much.
Then the old man said,
She is far away on an island over the sea
and is guarded by a seven-headed dragon,
and it is difficult to get there.
But if you should get there too,
the dragon will kill you.
But the boy did not let himself be frightened.
He took all his clothes and shoes with him
and wandered for seven years in one fort
and had already torn all his clothes and shoes
and could not go on before exhaustion.
But there was still no sea to be seen far and wide.
He fell down a hill
and thought of dying there.
Then he heard a noise once in the distance.
It came closer and closer.
Finally he saw three mighty chickens
which were tearing at each other.
He soon asked them
what caused their quarrel.
Oh, they said,
it is the most precious thing in the world,
a coat that makes the one who wears it invisible,
a hat that leads the one who puts it on everywhere
and a sword with which he can defeat everything
that swings it.
Whoever owns these three pieces
can save the most beautiful young woman
who is trapped on the island over the sea
and acquire the largest kingdom with her.
The boy was looking forward to this message
in his heart and hoped.
If you are right, I want to decide the quarrel.
Bring me those pieces
and then fight with each other.
The simple chickens immediately brought a coat,
hat and sword to him
and fell into each other's hair.
The boy quickly took the sword,
threw the coat around
and put on the hat and said,
I would be right on the island.
Hush, he was gone
and the stupid chickens had foreseen it.
When the boy arrived on the island,
he took off his hat and coat,
took only the sword
and set off for the castle.
The dragon was about to appear
and the beautiful young woman had to seduce him.
Only once did the dragon smell human flesh.
Then he roared and writhed in anger.
But the boy came unscathed
and suddenly took off all his clothes.
He quickly put on his coat again,
hurried to the castle,
took the box with the clothes
and threw them into the sea.
Then he took off the coat
and the young woman,
his bride, showed herself.
She recognized him immediately
and was overjoyed.
The boy quickly went to his mother
by means of the wish hat
and brought her to the dragon castle
on the far island.
Then he celebrated the wedding
with his bride
and was king and lord
over all the land and all the treasures
which the dragon
had possessed.
