Hi, Alex from Bike Mats here with a top 10 rundown of our favourite A2 motorcycles that
are currently on the market. Starting off the list at number 10 is the Zontes T310.
Brett has had one of these on test and said it needs to be included, so here it is. Now
you may be surprised to see the T310 from Zontes on this list and it is a budget option
from China, but hear me out. The T310 offers some pretty good tech and surprisingly good
performance for a great price. The 312cc single cylinder motor puts out 34bhp and comfortably
cruises at motorway speeds and beyond. The clutch is nice and light and the adventure
styling really sets this apart from the rest. Gadgets are not missing here either. As standard
you get Bosch ABS, rider modes, LCD display, a USB charger, electric screen, keyless ignition
and even some backlit controls. Not too bad for £3,999. Brett praised the riding position
with a seat height of 840mm and the lightweight nature of the bike. It weighs in at just 149kg
dry. It really is a good beginner adventure bike. You can check out Brett's full review
if you want to know more about this bike. At number 9 we have the Honda CMX 500 Rebel.
So admittedly cruisers are a bit of a rarity in the A2 category, but Honda have come out
with a great option for A2 riders that do fancy a bit of a relaxed ride. Sporting the
same 471cc engine as the CBR500R but remounted for a different character, you can expect
45bhp and 44.6Nm of torque from this Rebel. It's a smooth and linear response on the
road, being lightweight and comfortable at just 190kg. It's got a 690mm seat height
as well so it's perfectly suited for a gradual step up from a 125cc. You get 41mm telescopic
forks at the front and a Showa rear shock with a Pro-Link system. So if you're after
an A2 friendly cruiser you can't go wrong with Honda's bulletproof CMX 500 Rebel.
It's only £5,699 new. At number 8 is the Ducati Scrambler 62. 2016
saw the launch of the A2 compliant Scrambler 62, aimed at newer riders who are attracted
by this trendy new genre of scrambler motorcycle. Powered by a 399cc air-cooled twin cylinder
outputting a cool 40bhp, expect a premium ride from a premium motorcycle that weighs
183kg wet. As well as the scrambler styling, the 62 shares many of the same components
from its larger siblings in the range, LED lights, Showa forks and adjustable Kayaba
rear shock for starters. The bike itself could be a great little commuter perfectly set up
for longer rides, with a 790mm seat height and an estimated 60mpg. Whilst the price is
a premium £6,750, it's also the cheapest brand new Ducati you can buy.
For our number 7 spot we have the BMW G310R. BMW had an A2 shaped hole in their model range
for quite a while, but in 2016 they remedied this with the G310R. Although no major updates
for 2019, it remains a decent contender in the A2 market and the cheapest you'll find
a brand new Beemer at £4,670. If you're after a commuter friendly option which carries
a similar look to the S1000R, this is for you. Estimated close to 100mpg with a standard
seat height of 785mm, it weighs in at just 158kg wet, so it's well worth considering
for commuters. Powered by a 313cc single cylinder engine with 34bhp and 28Nm of torque, it won't
be setting the world alight, but it definitely won't struggle on faster roads. It does
have a few extra inclusions like Bibery brakes, BMW ABS and USD or upside down forks, but
to keep the price low it only has the essentials. Number 6 is the Kawasaki Ninja 400. A real
beauty and an impressive Ninja that will excite even the big bike fanatics. Even a quick glance
at the Ninja 400 and the ZX6R, they both look similar enough. But if you look closer you
do see a few differences. Overall, the Ninja 400 is a little bit sleeker with raised clip-on
bars for a comfier riding position and a missing air intake at the front. This is
basically a mid-step from 125cc to a full Ninja rider. I mean it even has an eco riding
indicator. But it's by no means a slouch. The 44.3bhp 390cc engine puts out 38Nm of
torque and weighs in at just 168kg wet. With ABS, LED lights and a slipper clutch, for
£5,499 you can get a staple of the A2 sports bike world.
So just before we continue on to number 5 of the list, it is worth mentioning that if
you're in the UK and you're looking at getting yourself an A2 motorcycle, make sure
to head on over to lexhaminsurance.co.uk to get yourself a nice competitive insurance
quote. Their best deals are direct. And for those that don't know, Lexham Insurance
do power bike lads and make these videos possible, so huge thank you to them.
Coming in at number 5 is the Yamaha YZF-R3. Freshly updated for 2019 and featuring a host
of improvements from the previous edition, including an adjusted riding position. It's
between comfort and aggression through the use of lower clip-ons, allowing a nice tucked
in position if you're giving it some. You'll also find a redesigned fairing which is based
on the current MotoGP bike. Although it is fully faired, the bike is only 1kg heavier
than the current naked version and I've got no idea how they've managed it. It weighs
in at 169kg with a full tank. Performance on the road is provided by the same single
cylinder 321cc engine producing 41.4bhp. It's got retuned suspension and KYB forks in gold
to give it more feedback and a big bike feel and a big bike look. Surprisingly, given all
the improvements, the price is the same as the previous model, £5,299. The R3 is a superb
choice for beginners who want to get into the sports bike world without breaking the
bank.
Number 4, the Honda CBR500R. Honda gave their CBR500R an overhaul for 2019, improving both
performance and visuals whilst also bringing in a load of new high quality components.
Initially, the CBR is aimed at newer riders, so this A2 sports bike also gets a relaxed
race riding position. It's got high enough bars to cruise in comfort but rear sets at
a place so you can still get a good tuck similar to the traditional supersport, but it doesn't
look out of place next to a fireblade. The 471cc engine has been revised to increase
low and mid-range torque, making the bike much more responsive with faster acceleration.
The power output peaks right on the A2 limit at 47bhp. There's also a slipper clutch
and fully adjustable suspension. Overall, for £6,099, you get a cracking A2 sports
bike with the CBR500R.
Breaking into the top 3, the Yamaha MT-03. Middleweight naked bikes have been enjoying
a bit of a boom in recent years, and part of the reason behind this is the MT series
from Yamaha. So our number 3 A2 motorcycle is the MT-03. A lightweight and versatile
machine aimed directly at new riders that will enjoy the forgiving and foundation nature
of this bike. It's not quite as aggressive as the other bikes on this list, and certainly
not the most aggressive Yamaha you can buy, but it's still a great choice for a rider
that's still getting to grips with bigger bikes. It's almost a safe step up from the
125cc world.
Part of the appeal of the MT-03 is the 168kg weight and comfortable upright riding position.
With a low 780mm seat height, the 321cc inline 2-cylinder engine produces plenty of mid to
high rpm torque at 29.6Nm. With a touch over 41bhp, it's a perfect option for an A2
rider that wants to commute but still wants a bit of fun at the weekend. Brand new, one
of these will set you back around £4,999 new, but for your money you get a stylish
and capable A2 motorcycle.
Number 2 is the KTM 390 Duke. The Duke range from KTM has found its way onto loads of top
10 lists, which is testament to how great of a bike this is, especially as this one
has been around since 2017. Although competitors are starting to catch up, the 390 Duke remains
a solid option at great value. Let's talk about that value. This is a £4,699 motorcycle
that comes standard with Bosch ABS, adjustable suspension, USD forks, Ride by Wire tech,
a slipper clutch, Brembo brakes and a colour TFTU display with multimedia connectivity
to name a few. The engine is KTM's 373cc single cylinder with a 43bhp output. For
a bike that's only 149kg dry, you'll get an incredible performing bike to please
beginners and veterans alike out on the road. Aside from performance, the looks are enough
to set it apart on their own. It's an aggressive supermoto vibe, especially in that signature
orange. The 390 Duke is a great option for A2 riders.
So our number 1 A2 motorcycle is the Royal Enfield Interceptor. A bike that was released
to huge fanfare and is to this day selling incredibly well, Royal Enfield retain the
gorgeous retro styling that they have become known for whilst offering a load of different
finishes. A key feature on the Interceptor is the brand new 648cc twin cylinder engine
putting out 46bhp and plenty of grunt and Royal Enfield say oodles of torque across
the power band. Plus it does sound incredible for an A2 bike. Mated with some good quality
parts like Bibury brakes and Bosch ABS, the Interceptor also comes with a brilliant slipper
clutch as standard and Pirelli tyres. Royal Enfield are keen to keep the price low here
and you can get one of these brand new from £5,500 depending on the colour you go for.
Bargain! A huge bonus on this is the 3 year unlimited mileage warranty that comes with
it as well.
