Egypt.

But if you're ready to learn some basic vocabulary, now it's time to sit back, relax and repeat
after me.
Our first word is Pyramid.
Repeat after me, Pyramid.
The most famous pyramids are the Pyramids of Giza.
These can be found at the Giza Necropolis.
They were completed around 2560 BC and are comprised of 2.5 million stone blocks.
Located right beside the Pyramids of Giza is our next word and monument, the Sphinx.
This word can be tricky to pronounce, you have an S sound then an F sound.
Sphinx.
The Sphinx is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human.
The Pharaoh Khafre.
And Pharaoh is our next word in our top 10 list.
Again we have the PH which gives us the F sound and at the end we have a silent H. Pharaoh.
Definition of Pharaoh is a ruler or monarch in Egypt.
Three notable pharaohs you may come across in your studies are Hatshepsut, Tutankhamun
and Cleopatra.
Tutankhamun is very important and we'll come back to him in a moment but let's move on
to our fourth word.
Tomb.
Repeat after me, Tomb.
The B here is silent.
Let's take a look at the definition of a tomb.
A tomb is a cave, an excavation or a chamber used for the burial of the dead.
Ok let's go back to our Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
His tomb was discovered in 1922.
The discovery of his tomb was really famous because of the many treasures which were found
inside it.
One of the most impressive treasures found in Tutankhamun's tomb was his sarcophagus.
Let's try that word one more time, sarcophagus.
And the definition is a stone coffin typically adorned with a sculpture or inscription and
associated with the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Rome and Greece.
So we found our sarcophagus inside our tomb.
What is inside the sarcophagus?
Well of course it's a mummy.
Repeat after me, Mummy.
A mummy is a dead human or animal whose body has been preserved after death.
And that brings us to our seventh word which is Embalming.
Now what is embalming?
Embalming is the art and science of preserving human remains by treating them to slow down
decomposition.
So how do you embalm a body?
The ancient Egyptians embalmed bodies by removing organs, ridding the body of moisture and covering
the body with natron, a type of natural salt.
Ancient Egyptian culture developed embalming to the greatest extent along with extensive
rituals involved with death.
Also found in many tombs are hieroglyphics.
Repeat after me, Hieroglyphics.
Let's take a look at the definition.
It is a writing system based on stylized pictures of objects, representing words, syllables
or sound.
Let's move on to our ninth word which has a connection to hieroglyphics, Papyrus.
Repeat after me, Papyrus.
Let's take a look at the definition.
Papyrus is a material similar to thick paper that was used in ancient times as a writing
surface.
Papyrus is first known to have been used by the ancient Egyptians as the papyrus plant
was once abundant across the Nile delta.
Ok let's move on to our final word which is Obelisk.
Repeat after me, Obelisk.
For Egyptians the obelisk was a monument that commemorated the dead, represented their kings
and honoured their gods.
And can you believe it, that brings us to the end of this video lesson.
