Hello!
Hi!
My name is Ornel.
I grew up in the D.C. area, but I live in Chicago.
And I'm Sabrina.
I'm from Germany.
And, yeah, we travel partners now, just in Japan.
I see.
So, my name is Daisuke.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too.
So, you are friends in America?
No, we met here.
We met here, actually.
We met in Japan at the hostel.
Really?
Like, three days ago.
Yeah.
Wow, that's great!
So, when did you arrive in Japan?
I arrived in Japan...
I think Thursday night.
Thursday night?
Yeah.
It was like a long flight.
It was like a 13-hour flight.
And I came from Germany.
So, I visited my family from Germany, flew over here, had a layover in China for like
12 hours, and then came over here and arrived like a week ago.
I see.
Yeah.
So, did you try many Japanese food yet?
Yes and no.
I've had...
I went to Ichiran.
Ichiran?
Oh!
It's so good.
It was so good.
The ramen place.
I had ramen as well, but I haven't tried anything, really, in Japan.
How about sushi?
I did a sushi-making class.
I went to a cooking, like an Airbnb experience where they taught me how to make sushi.
Oh, I see.
Yeah.
I did that.
I just had the sushi from 7-Eleven.
Oh, really?
I see.
Okay, that's sad.
Yeah.
I know.
I was like, this is so good.
And everyone was like, no, you should try the real sushi.
I was like, but that was already so good.
Yeah.
I think the little bentos, like the triangle for breakfast is so good.
Yeah.
Onigiri?
Yeah!
It was so good.
From convenience store, maybe?
Yeah.
It was so good.
How about Wagyu, like Japanese beef?
No.
No?
Never tried.
I haven't tried that.
Okay.
I know one good restaurant for Wagyu beef.
So, we can go there from now.
Yeah, let's go.
Let's go.
Perfect.
Look at this.
Wow!
I think this is what we get also.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
Wow.
Yeah.
Beer or Japanese?
I would go for beer.
Asahi.
Okay.
Can I have sake?
Sake?
Yeah, sure.
So, why did you decide to come to Japan?
I'm super into anime as a kid.
And I wanted to learn Japanese when I was little.
Okay.
Yeah.
But I always wanted to go to Japan.
And I had a couple of extra days, so I was like, why not now?
If not now, never, right?
Yeah.
Today is my last day, so I'm gonna fly tonight.
So sad.
But I had a great time and I met great people.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh.
It's still moving!
Whoa!
Whoa.
Okay, let's cheers!
This is sake.
Thank you.
Is this your first time drinking sake?
No, I tried it yesterday at Ogome.
The Blessing Street.
It has like the red lights.
Is it Shinjuku?
Shinjuku, I see.
Cheers!
It looks so good.
Is it okay for me to still take some?
What is this again?
This is kind of fish eggs.
We call it Tobiko.
If you bite it, it pops.
It's crunchy.
This is a towel.
We can clean up our hands before we eat.
I love that Japan does this.
It's so clean.
Japan is insanely clean.
I have a question though.
Where is the trash can in Japan?
What's going on?
Because there's never any trash.
Excuse me, I have a theory.
I think everyone is following the rules.
Japan is a bit more strict.
Everyone takes their trash back home.
Yeah, we take our trash back home.
Because it saves a lot of money.
For the city or the government.
And it's so clean here.
That's so interesting.
This is why I like to sit in front of the chef.
We can see what he's making.
In your country, do you use chopsticks?
No.
I feel like only when I eat Asian food.
Yeah, if you eat Chinese food.
But I didn't know you ate salad with chopsticks too.
We eat with chopsticks.
I'm guessing this is crab?
Yeah, crab meat.
The sauce tastes like yummy sauce.
Is the taste okay?
The meat looks so good.
So I'm really excited to try Japanese beef.
And see how it compares to that.
Yeah, I think it's pretty different from American beef.
They have more fat in it.
So I think it makes it a bit saltier.
Compared to your beef.
Yeah.
Japanese restaurants are kind of popular in your country.
Asian, Korean.
So they have sushi stores.
But ramen, not really.
I mean, in Australia, they do Japanese food.
Ramen, sushi.
But in Germany, it's really uncommon.
I took my dad to a sushi place.
Because I think he never tried sushi.
And it's like 4 years ago.
So he tried sushi when he was 53.
The first time in his life.
I was like, how is it possible?
Also, Chinese buffet.
It's just fried noodles, skewers.
Some sushi.
But it's not really that good.
Because it's like a buffet.
I grew up in the suburbs of D.C.
In Maryland.
So there's a huge Japanese culture.
And then for college, I went to school in San Francisco.
And there's literally Japan Town.
There's so much Japanese cuisine.
And a lot of things.
Next one.
This is sea urchin.
Do you know what sea urchin is?
No.
Sea urchin is like a shellfish.
Wow.
I did not know that.
What the heck?
I have seen this.
But I've never tried it.
What's the white stuff?
It looks so cute. It looks like an egg.
Do you know what I saw?
This is like a dessert.
I thought it was a dessert.
I was like, why did they bring a dessert already?
This orange one is sea urchin.
And this one is salmon egg.
Underneath, there's like a
corn.
So how do you eat it?
You just dig in with a spoon and eat it.
Oh, true.
First time.
Are you afraid?
A bit.
Cheers to that.
It's good.
It's nice. It's salty.
It tastes a bit like
soy sauce.
The flavor.
It's good.
It's jiggly like jello.
So this is sea urchin and
salmon egg.
It's really smooth.
I really like it.
It looks a bit like a coral.
I feel like the corn
has like a sweet texture.
And then the sea urchin
adds like a
nice soft flavorful.
So it's like a
sweet and salty.
I actually really like it. It's actually really good.
It's crazy.
First time.
It's good because I would never try it.
The corn is interesting.
Yeah.
I feel like the corn is really sweet.
It has like a nice smooth texture.
Yeah.
I've never tried wasabi.
I feel like the wasabi here in
Japan,
tasting it, it's so
smooth.
It's actually really soft.
In the States, it punches you in the face.
And I heard that because they use a lot of
horseradish.
So it's not authentic
full wasabi.
It's very soft.
Maybe it's shrimp.
They're pretty common everywhere in the world.
You don't eat a lot of shrimp too?
No.
Are we getting shrimps?
I tried everything.
I'm not a person who's smelling stuff and like
oh that smells weird.
I try it all the time.
And the thing is that your taste
changes every 7 years or something.
Oh yeah.
I always try again.
Same with the restaurant by the way.
Teppanyaki?
Teppanyaki.
Yeah.
In America, they call it hibachi.
Oh I've been to hibachi.
Yeah I've been to hibachi places.
But teppanyaki,
does that mean hibachi?
I don't know.
Teppan means
pub place.
Arigatou gozaimasu.
Arigatou.
Is this grapefruit?
Yeah, grapefruit.
Do I pour it on there?
Do you put it on top?
You can eat it by itself.
Let me try.
That is so fresh.
That's so good.
I never thought of
grapefruit on meat.
But that's so good.
That's nice.
Right?
I like the new texture.
That's so good.
I'm surprised you
never tried it.
You never tried it and you must like it.
I know right.
But it's good. I like it.
Yeah, I like this part.
It has a different texture.
What is it?
Really?
And then they put like broccoli.
That's what I thought as well.
It tastes like broccoli pieces.
It looks like a seasoning.
Right?
All of them?
Yeah.
That was so juicy.
I think America is cool sometimes.
Other times I'm like it's not cool.
Every time I go to the bathroom in Japan
I'm like
America is not cool at all.
I used the bathroom at the station
and I was like America
can never.
It's so clean.
Everything is there to help.
It's so clean.
Especially for a subway station.
Do you have to pay for toilets?
In America?
I don't think I've ever been to a toilet
in a station in America.
Ever.
Whoever helped Japan
needs to come help us.
Come help us with the bathroom.
Come help us with the subway station.
Just come help us.
For me it was such a huge cultural shock
to see how
Kulut cleans the subway station.
There's even
somewhere to put your baby.
And it makes sense
because people have kids.
In America, America wouldn't have that.
I really like spicy food.
This is like green pepper
and tuna.
Tuna?
Where is the tuna?
The tuna here is so big.
I held the tuna fish.
Tuna fish is like
so big.
Every time I come to Japan
I want to fish my fish
and then I want to make my own sushi.
I want to have the full experience.
Oh my god.
That is so nice.
It feels like melting in your mouth.
This is so good.
It's so fresh.
I think this is my favorite so far.
Really?
It's so good.
So fresh.
That's so good.
This one
is kind of Japanese
citrus pepper.
So if you want to change the flavor
you can use this.
You call it ancho pepper.
I put a lot.
It's so good.
This one looks like
a little bit fatty.
It's like a medium fatty color.
Yeah, really good.
That was so good.
What is it?
Potato, cheese, and mushroom inside.
I don't know if you like it or not.
You just told me
you don't like mushroom for 27 years.
Yeah, I mean I eat mushroom
but
I wouldn't order it.
That's so good.
For me, it tastes like a 5-star friend.
Like crab
with cheese
nice meat
but super fancy.
You know those hot pockets?
I saw them in Japan.
Hot pockets.
They're like burritos.
A lot of people in America like them.
It's basically like flour
and it's like macchi.
I see them sometimes at the convenience store here.
So what's the kind of meat?
It's meat and...
Is that right?
It's mushroom.
That's mushroom.
That's something you don't like.
But you like it.
Is it good?
It's grape vinegar.
What is this again?
It's grape vinegar.
To get it ready for another palate.
Cheers!
My turn to try.
That was so good.
It's so sweet.
No, that was so good.
It was really good.
Grape juice.
She will make a fire.
Nice fire.
The meat just looks so nice.
Thank you.
Wanna try the wasabi?
It's so tender.
It's so good.
This is my favorite part.
You can see all the cheese.
It's so good.
It's good, right?
It's good.
There's a lot of juice in the back.
I actually think this is
one of the best meat.
It tastes amazing.
It's really good.
That food is so good.
Everything is so good.
It's not rice.
It's rice.
I like it.
In Japan,
wasabi is not as spicy as it is.
No, it's not spicy.
You don't feel much spiciness?
That's good.
It's good.
I told you.
In Japan, I feel like this is so smooth.
Even when you smell it
in other countries,
it's burning straight away.
I really think it's because
in other places, they mix
the wasabi.
I think for us,
in America,
when I taste the wasabi,
I still like wasabi.
I still eat it.
Here, it's just so light and airy.
It's really soft.
It just mellows out your palate.
Yes.
I already ate half.
I didn't have that.
That's really good.
Is this miso soup?
It's nice. I do like it.
It's so good.
Good experience.
Thank you so much.
I think that was one of the best things
from the whole Japan trip.
I feel like I really just have to sit there
after we're done eating.
Wow.
That was amazing.
Thank you.
Bye.
