Why do the world's stars only compete with Japan in Asia?
Even though Korea is a better country, I can't believe it!
Thank you for your hard work, everyone.
I'm Yuri of Personality.
After the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult to go abroad,
Japanese performances by foreign artists were in full swing.
However, from the second half of 2022,
performances by major foreign artists will be held in Japan one after another.
In 2022, famous artists such as Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, KISS, Guns N' Roses will be held in Japan.
And in 2023, world-famous artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Backstreet Boys, and Eric Clapton will perform in Japan.
Japanese people may think that it is natural for foreign artists to come to Japan one after another.
However, in fact, Japan is the only country in Asia where there are so many performances by foreign artists.
This time, I would like to introduce an episode of a Korean woman who was dissatisfied with foreign artists performing only in Japan.
She came to Japan to see a live performance by a foreign artist,
and she understood why they wanted to go to Japan.
What was the reason why foreign artists chose Japan?
Let's take a look.
As a result, Koreans came to Japan to find the reason why world-famous artists went to Japan only.
My name is Young. I'm a Korean in my 20s.
I've always hated Japan since I was a kid.
The reason was the confrontation over Japanese history.
When I was in school, I thought that Japan was a terrible country when I learned about the issue of welfare and land.
But there was another reason why I hated Japan.
That was when I was a college student.
At that time, I was addicted to a male artist in the United States.
Not only is he a good singer, but he also has great looks, so there are fans all over the world.
All tickets for his concerts in the United States and Europe are sold out immediately.
I listened to his songs every day and wanted to go to his concert just once.
One day, his world tour was decided.
Of course, I was very happy and decided to go to his concert.
On the day of the concert, I took a day off from college and part-time job and went to the concert no matter what.
Even if I had an important exam, I would pass it.
At that time, I was completely excited and went around to my parents, friends, and college professors like that.
But many of my friends said,
You haven't decided to come to Korea yet, have you?
If you don't have a concert in Korea, do you have the money to go abroad?
I was laughed at.
But I believed that he would definitely come to Korea.
Because it's a world tour, he should come to Asia, not just America and Europe, right?
Korea is economically developing, and the momentum of K-pop is great, and it is recognized as a country of music.
That's why I thought it was Korea that would be chosen as a concert destination in an Asian country.
But the reality is cruel.
Unfortunately, Korea was not chosen as a concert destination for the world tour.
And only Tokyo, Japan, was chosen as a concert destination in Asia.
Even China, the second largest economic power in the world, was excluded.
And there was no concert in South America, Africa, and Oceania.
In the end, it was decided to go to Europe, America, and Tokyo.
Which part of this is a world tour?
I was very disappointed that the host country was too biased.
Still, I couldn't give up going to the concert.
If there was no Korean concert, I thought I would go to Japan, which was the closest.
But at that time, I was a poor student.
I didn't have enough money to pay the ticket to the concert, so I tried to borrow money from my parents.
But...
You can't pay such a large amount of money, can you?
I was so angry that I couldn't go to the concert.
At that time, I hated my parents who didn't pay the ticket and the agency that excluded Korea from the concert destination.
And then, a few months later,
I was chatting with my friend who likes music on SNS.
I learned a shocking fact.
Hey, do you know?
In most cases of world tours of American and European artists,
the Asian concert destination is only Japan.
I was shocked when I read the message she sent me.
Why is it only Japan?
It's true that Japan is a world-class economic power, but it's still a small island country.
In the first place, China should be the top in Asia for being an economic power.
But isn't it a little strange that only Japan is chosen?
I had some doubts about my friend's story.
But when I looked it up, the information was true.
Most of the world tour destinations of American and European artists are in the West, Japan and Australia.
According to recent data, the ranking of world tour destinations of American and European artists was like this.
1. London
2. Los Angeles
3. Paris
4. New York
5. Melbourne
6. Tokyo
7. Toronto
8. Sydney
9. Chicago
10. Birmingham
Really, only Japan is in Asia.
By the way, this ranking was announced to be in the 20th place,
but other Asian countries did not rank in.
In addition, Africa and South America were not popular.
Moreover, when I looked it up, this trend had been going on for a long time,
and my big stars did not come to Korea, but only went to Japan in Asia.
Beatles, ABBA, Queen, Bob Dylan, Carpenters, Elton John, Olivia Newton-John, Rolling Stones.
These are just a part of it, and countless other pop stars came to Japan many times.
I didn't even look at Korea.
Ever since I learned the truth, I have hated Japan.
I thought Japan must have been extorted from abroad.
And when I think about it, I feel like Japan is treated specially from abroad in various ways.
Japanese people are wonderful, Japanese culture is cool, and Japanese food is booming all over the world.
In particular, I felt that the West was grateful for the existence of Japan like a fool.
But the truth is not like that.
Japan is not a country that everyone praises, and Korea is much more wonderful.
I've always thought so.
However, a few years later, I became a member of society, and I decided to reconsider my thoughts.
When I started working, I was able to afford it economically, so I decided to go to Japan for the first time.
Why did I go to Japan, which I hated so much? I'm sure you all think.
But at that time, I had a reason why I had to go to Japan.
It was because my favorite artist's world tour was decided and Japan was chosen as the venue.
At that time, only Japan's Tokyo was selected in Asia.
Again, I was angry that Korea was excluded.
The schedule was 4 nights and 5 days.
Considering the distance between Korea and Japan, there was no problem even if I left on the morning of the day of the live and stayed for two days.
But at that time, it was a good opportunity, so I thought I'd thoroughly check what kind of country Japan was.
If Japan wasn't the only country to be selected in Asia, I was going to beat Japan thoroughly on social media.
That's how I got into Japan.
However, as soon as I arrived in Japan, I was surprised by the greatness of Japan.
First of all, I was surprised by the cleanliness of the toilet.
The toilet I used at the airport was so sophisticated and clean that I thought it was a luxury hotel toilet.
Moreover, it was a high-tech toilet with various functions, and it was very comfortable.
In Korea, there are places that introduce the latest toilet at airports, but there are many old-fashioned toilets.
In such a toilet, you don't flush the used toilet paper into the water and throw it away in the trash in the private room, so it feels unsanitary.
On the other hand, in Japan, you can flush the toilet paper into the water in any toilet, and even a small cafe toilet is high-tech and fine.
I thought it was impossible in Korea.
And I was surprised by the Japanese manners.
When I was moving from the airport to the hotel, I was on the train, but when I looked at the scenery at the station's platform, I doubted my eyes.
Because everyone was waiting for the train to come in a line.
Of course, no one was trying to break into the line.
And when the train arrived, people were lining up in order.
I thought it was a big difference from Koreans who try to get on the train first.
Moreover, their manners were wonderful even in the car.
No one was talking loudly, no one was calling.
In addition, when I noticed that I had a big luggage, there were people who stood up and gave it to me.
Speaking of the shock at this time, I was mixed with surprise, joy, and emotion.
And the food was also high-level.
The night I arrived in Japan, I was wondering what to eat for dinner, so I searched for restaurants around the hotel on my smartphone.
Then there were a lot of shops of various genres.
Japanese food, Chinese food, French, Italian, Korean food, ethnic, ramen, curry.
I thought there was no other place in Japan where I could enjoy such a variety of food.
Moreover, all the shops have great taste and quality of service.
Korean food was so much better than the Korean food I usually eat,
It was completely different from the taste of a restaurant for tourists, which is common overseas.
Speaking of food, convenience store food was also delicious in Japan.
Moreover, there were a lot of bread and sweets, so I often went to a convenience store near the hotel in the middle of the night.
In addition, I thought it was convenient that Japanese convenience stores were basically open 24 hours a day.
In Korea, the minimum wage has risen in recent years,
and there are more convenience stores that suspend late-night sales due to the fact that they can't pay for late-night staff fees.
The convenience store near my house has recently changed to a time-limited business, so it's inconvenient.
Cleanliness, convenience, manners of people, delicious food, and peace of mind.
There were many charms that Japan did not have in Korea.
This is a complete defeat for Korea.
It is natural for foreign stars to want to choose Japan instead of Korea.
I was able to realize the greatness of Japan while staying in Japan at this time.
The live performances of the artists I saw in Japan were very fun,
but the most impressive thing for me was the excellent part of Japan.
Foreign reaction
There are many large concert venues in Japan, and there are many people who buy expensive tickets and come to see them.
In addition, Japanese people have a good manner of the audience.
I've been to Japan once to see a live performance, but after the audience left, there was overwhelmingly less garbage in the venue.
It's like foreign artists are declaring that they will only go to such countries.
For us Chinese people, Japan is very envious.
China is an economic power globally, but in Asia, Japan is the only country that is chosen as a concert destination.
For foreign stars, basically America, Europe, Australia, and Japan are the only countries in the world.
There are many artists who only go to Japan for Asian tours.
However, now that K-pop has gained worldwide popularity, the music market in Korea is also growing.
The day when Korea becomes a regular country to visit on a world tour may not be so far away.
It's a common pattern to go around America, Europe, and Japan and perform once or twice in South Africa and Australia.
But I don't think it's a problem to call it a world tour.
Because the main countries of the world are actually all over the place.
Whether you have a sufficient number of fans, or whether you have a certain number of fans in the neighboring country and have a short travel time,
or whether you can play your own music without being subject to laws or customs, or whether you have good security,
there is a reason why artists go to certain countries.
Based on that, Japan is a country worth going to.
Summary
The reason why many foreign artists perform in Japan is because of the size of the music market in Japan.
In the 1980s, the timing when the music industry in Europe and the United States became massive and the timing when Japan's economy grew were in sync,
so it is thought that Japan became a base for Asian countries at an early stage.
In addition, Japan is more advantageous than other Asian countries in terms of the fact that many foreign artists have come to Japan,
such as visa procedures, administrative processing, and promotion.
In addition, it is one of the reasons why Japan is selected as one of the Asian countries
because of its stable security, low political and religious barriers, and low concerns as an artist side and label side.
I hope that foreign artists will continue to liven up Japan with their performances in the future,
and I would be happy if you enjoyed Japan while you were there and wanted to go to Japan again.
How was it? If you like, I would be happy if you could tell us your impressions in the comments.
