#英会話 #レストラン #ランチ
Hi guys, konnichiwa, genki desu ka? Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. I live in Los Angeles and today I'm gonna show you a very
American restaurant called Mel's Drive-In. I'll show you around the restaurant, the area, I'll show you how to order food in English,
how you can have a conversation with staff, I'll show you the food that I'm gonna eat, and I'll tell you what it tastes like.
So hopefully you can imagine it and enjoy it.
So yeah, you excited? Because I am. Let's do this.
So we're gonna walk up there. So Mel's Drive-In is a really, really cool
1950s style diner and
it's actually a small restaurant chain with a few locations in both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
And as far as I know,
all Mel's Drive-In, they are located in Southern California. They're housed in historic buildings.
So they look really, really cool from the outside and inside too. I'm gonna show you.
Now, as I've said, all Mel's Drive-Ins are located in historic buildings and this one is not an exception.
It's a great example of an early, I think they call it Googie design.
It's a mid-century modern style in architecture and you can see
places like that all over Los Angeles. Some gas stations, motels, and coffee shops built back in the 50s
follow the style and you can recognize it by the
angled roof lines, by the dramatic signage, and other kind of space-age elements. So it's really fun.
So here we are. Here's the menu. You can see that it's
a pretty big one. They have so many options.
As with pretty much everything in Los Angeles, there is always this connection to the movies, to the film industry.
So this particular chain was featured in a lot of movies and
Ron Howard, Richard Pripus, Harrison Ford made this diner really famous in the
1973 movie called American Graffiti, directed by George Lucas. Obviously, this place has been around for a very long time.
It says it right here that the first drive-in restaurant in San Francisco
opened up in
1947. So that's really impressive. Most restaurants in Los Angeles, they come and go.
So it's really rare to
come across a place that has stayed, managed to stay in business for so long.
Now,
when it comes to food, I wouldn't be particularly raving about it. I mean, it's good for what it is.
It's really famous for its burgers. It's also a really good place for
breakfast, but
okay, here's the thing. If I
was traveling from Japan, I wouldn't be particularly
raving about any food in Los Angeles or in America in general.
But what this place has
is a really cool vibe. So
what I really love this place for is that it has this amazing vibe, this amazing energy, and it really looks like
it's from the 50s. It's like
traveling back in time. So I really love coming here and bringing people who
visit Los Angeles. They all enjoy this kind of traditional
American diner that you can't find anywhere else in the world.
I'm gonna show you one of the coolest things about this restaurant. The thing behind me is an old-school jukebox.
This is so fun. All you need is to place 25 cents a quarter
inside the jukebox, and you can pick a song, and it'll play it for you.
All right, I think I found my song. Why don't we play Desperado by Eagles?
One of the really cool things about going out in Los Angeles restaurants is that many times in many places
you're able to sort of customize your food. You can ask them to add or remove certain ingredients.
They're usually very accommodating and
they try to do their best, but let's see if it's gonna be the case today.
So I was thinking of getting a burger, but the thing is that I don't eat bread.
So I can't have a bun with my burger, except for once a year on Valentine's Day,
but it's not the day. So I'm going to ask them to
possibly wrap my burger in a
lettuce leaf.
Some places, they offer that. They pull out a protein style,
an alternative to your regular burger. So
they may be able to do it. They may not. Let's find out.
I obviously don't want to be like a difficult customer or pest, so I will be perfectly happy
regardless of the outcome.
Yes, I'm thinking of getting a burger.
And do you have a recommendation? I don't think I've ever tried Mel's burger.
I know like this one is famous, and I've never seen the Hollywood burger. This is new, right?
So
which one would you recommend?
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, maybe. Yeah, why not? I'll do Hollywood burger, please.
Yes, would it be possible to skip the bun and make it like in the lettuce wrap or something? Amazing!
Great. No, that's it.
Yay!
There it is.
Thank you.
You guys are probably thinking this is not a real burger,
but I am super happy because they were able to accommodate my request and instead of bread, instead of a bun,
they wrapped it in lettuce. So I can enjoy my meat. I can enjoy my protein.
And you can see it comes with fries.
Fries are looking nice.
This is my burger.
Not your traditional burger, but even better. I have to like literally cut it in pieces and eat it with a knife.
It looks good, actually.
So good.
So,
you see all the stuff inside.
So I finished my burger. It was delicious.
But as you can see, it came with a whole bunch of fries and there is absolutely no way
I'm gonna be able to finish them all. But they're good. So the burger is fantastic.
It's not greasy. The meat is really, really, really tasty. It's not overly salty. It's really like a good balance of
flavors and I feel like I'm gonna be stuffed for the rest of the day.
But it's pretty light, which I really love. So I'm done with my lunch. Happy, happy. Everything was delicious.
The service was great. I got a chance to play one of my favorite tracks and I just asked for a check.
We'll see how much is it gonna be.
So here's my check. For some reason, they only charged me for a burger. They brought me a bottle of water as well.
Here's a bottle of water.
It was very nice of them. My waitress was super friendly and very nice and very accommodating.
So I'm just gonna leave her $23.
I'm back. Thank you so much for joining me on this little adventure.
I really enjoyed my experience with Mel's Drive-In. The food was great. The service was fantastic and
I just really love that place because it's so iconic and it's really representative of American culture.
It's fun. The vibe is always great and it's only around the corner from where I live.
So it's super convenient.
Unfortunately, though, I won't be able to visit it anytime soon because I'm about to hop on the plane to go see my mom.
We're gonna spend some time together, catching up, having fun, hopefully, and
yeah, once I'm back, I
will hopefully introduce you to more places that you
will hopefully find interesting and
yeah, see you next time. This is a a kaiwa.
