Is it possible to make really crispy chicken wings
in an air fryer?
Well, today we're gonna try to find out.
So follow along and let's turn up the tasty.
Chicken wings obviously are not red meat,
they're white meat, but we love cooking chicken wings.
We're gonna try to cook crispy chicken wings
in this here air fryer.
What I have here is basically chicken wings.
I mean, that's kind of necessary in order to make this dish.
I've just removed the little wing tip.
It's the part that goes right here.
You can save it for stock.
Now you can separate these or you can leave them together.
I actually like to leave them together.
It's a little easier to flip,
but you only have to flip half as many
because they're connected.
But right over here, we're gonna season this bowl
with our JoJo rub.
That's a simple rub we created using common ingredients
found in our kitchen, probably yours too.
And we give this away for free.
Not like literally, we're not gonna ship it to you for free,
but we tell you how to make it right on our website.
We also have a video on our channel.
In this bowl, we also have chicken wings,
but we're gonna season this bowl with chicken salt.
We got this from our friend, Mike Johnson,
the owner of Sugarfire Smokehouse.
We went to visit him for our Meet America program,
and this is what he's using to season his chicken wings,
his smoke-fried chicken wings.
Smokes them and fries them.
And basically, he got this idea
because he went to Australia and he said...
It's basically like a super umami,
chicken-flavored garlic salt.
But everyone in Australia puts this on their french fries.
Like, they don't even have a french fry going out
without chicken salt on there.
And it's made...
I love this taste.
He gave it to me and I haven't actually tried it,
so today we're gonna put it to the test.
And you just wanna try to, you know,
evenly coat both sides.
It's not gonna be a perfect process by any means,
but just do your best and forget the rest.
Thanks, Tony Horton.
Next up, chicken salt.
It's a little harder to tell where it's coated
just because this is a much lighter color
than the JoJo rub, as you can see right there.
Has like a, I guess I'd call it like a red-orange-ish hue
to it from the paprika and the seasoned salt that's in there.
So, we got the wire rack right here.
We don't want these touching.
Now, they're gonna look in the video probably like they are,
but there is a little bit of space
between all these right here.
Let the air flow freely around these wings.
Put it...
I don't go quite to the top,
but I just go to the second one down, right there.
We'll go ahead and hit that chicken.
Hit that power button.
It's gonna give me a timer of 20 minutes.
So, I think it's a 10-minute mark.
I should probably flip these.
We're gonna come back, check on them,
probably flip them over, let that air, you know, coat.
Does air coat things?
All right, guys, it's been 10 minutes.
Let's pull them out and see how they look.
Now, I like to pull this rack out and put it on a plate,
so that way I don't have to make a mess,
get it directly on the countertop,
and those are already looking really great.
As you can see, they're not looking as crispy underneath,
so that's why we're gonna go ahead and flip them over.
Make sure that this air coats these wings.
Yeah, I said it.
Make sure the air coats these wings evenly on both sides.
I pulled it out at nine minutes.
We got 11 to go.
I don't think that's gonna make a big difference.
As you can see, I'm making a potholder that I made.
Made this myself when I was probably 10,
so clearly knew I had some insight into my future.
Anyone who's seen my channel knows
that during the long cooks,
I like to search for conspiracy theories online.
How do you kill the time?
I just go online and promote my flat earth theory
that I've been running with for the last 20 years.
I may have come across your theory, yeah.
There's no way this thing's round.
We would roll off the edge.
You know what I mean?
How are we not going like this right now?
Excellent points.
With that said, let's check out the chicken, man.
It's been 20 minutes.
Let's pull them out and see how they look.
I mean, that's feeling crispy.
That really is.
I oftentimes use the end of like
an instant read thermometer.
Can you guys hear that at home?
Still getting a little bit of softness on these.
I normally don't temp out chicken wings, but I'm curious.
Let's see what the temp reads.
They're done, they're cooked.
180.
And let's go for another, I don't know, 10 minutes.
I mean, it's really hard to overcook chicken wings,
especially with all the fat that's in the skin.
10 minutes.
So it's been another 10 minutes,
and now let's see how they look.
Oh man, look, you can see that grease,
that oil still bubbling right there.
And I gotta say, those look really crispy.
Very nice.
So we're gonna pull, oh, that's a little wet right there,
but by and large, I'm gonna declare these done.
30 minutes total cook time.
I flipped twice throughout the process.
Now, they're gonna be real hot, and I like hot food.
These are gonna be too hot.
So I'm gonna go ahead and transfer these
over to the cutting board, let them rest for five minutes,
and then my favorite part, the taste test.
All right, these wings have now been cooling
for five minutes.
They look great, and they smell even better.
We're gonna start over here with the JoJo rub.
That's the wing we know.
We've used this in a lot of videos.
And look at that, it's just coming right apart.
Now, I'm gonna start over here with the flat.
I personally like drummies and flats.
I can't really say I have a preference,
but I know a lot of people do.
What's your preference?
Let us know in the comments below.
That's a good wing.
It tastes a lot like a fried chicken wing would taste.
I'm really impressed.
Very juicy on the interior.
Not dried out at all, 30 minutes,
I think was about the right amount of time.
I think we probably could've gone another 10 minutes
and still had a very juicy wing.
Look, when we cook these on the grill,
they've taken up to an hour and 15 minutes.
They take over an hour in the oven.
We can speed up the cooking process on the grill
using that vortex attachment,
but it still goes like 30, 45 minutes from what I remember.
Let's take a look at this right now
before I go on over to the second set.
Pretty clean, we got a little bit of grease down here,
but that will clean up real easy.
Much easier than, let's just say,
a whole cast iron skillet full of oil.
Anyway, enough with the blah, blah, blah.
Over here, I'll go for,
well, I wanna keep it consistent.
We'll go with the flat again.
It's about ready to bite in that drummie.
Also, crispy wing.
Wow, this chicken salt has a really unique flavor to it.
Getting that salt, you're getting that pepper.
It's a really kind of savory rub.
I like it.
I think what we learned here today is,
yes, you can make crispy chicken wings in an air fryer.
It takes about 30 minutes.
You can go a little bit longer.
They weren't dried out.
Are they as good or better than fried chicken wings?
Well, I think we're gonna try that experiment next,
see how it goes, but no one will be upset
if you serve them this chicken wing
prepared in an air fryer.
Look, we've showed you guys a lot of different ways
to cook wings on this channel.
In the grill, on the grill, they're both the same thing.
In the oven, not on the oven.
That's not gonna make any difference at all.
How do you guys like to cook chicken wings?

I pulled it out nine minutes.
We got 11 to go.
I don't think that's gonna make a big difference.
As you can see, I'm making a potholder that I made.
Made this myself when I was probably 10,
so clearly knew I had some insight into my future.
It's really stood the test of time.
Maybe I should just make a channel,
start a channel making those things.
Hey, it wasn't just that one.
I also made this antique, too, 30 years old,
right here on both of these things, 30 years strong.
We're really bringing some nostalgia here to the channel.
Last week, I busted out the, what, the Sesame Street
pillow sham, pillow cover, Sesame Street pillow cover,
so I could do a legit blind taste test,
and today, yeah, back with these antiques, man.
Really holding up.
