Inquisitor Merrick's identity has been revealed in Ahsoka, and it involves a connection to the Nightsisters.
Warning, full spoilers ahead for Ahsoka Episode 4.
Don't say we didn't warn ya.
The mystery of Merrick created many different theories as to who could be underneath his helmet.
One of the most popular has been that Sam Witwer's star killer, or Galen Merrick, is coming to live action,
mostly due to Witwer being credited for lending his voice to Ahsoka.
Others have even considered Ezra Bridger himself, theorizing that he fell to the dark side after his time spent with Thrawn,
and somehow made his way back to the galaxy to help Morgan Elspeth while being held under a Nightsister spell.
Some thought it could be Barriss Offee, the Jedi who betrayed Ahsoka in Star Wars The Clone Wars,
but no one could have ever guessed his true identity.
The death of Merrick in Ahsoka Episode 4 revealed that the Inquisitor has been composed of Nightsister magic the entire time.
Egads, what sorcery is this?
He died with a burst of green smoke after his duel with Ahsoka, which is the color of the Nightsister's magic.
This follows with the history of Merrick in Arthurian legend, as he too was under the control of a witch.
Witch! Witch! Witch!
Nightsister magic, as seen in The Clone Wars, has shown that reanimating someone like Merrick is very possible.
So it could very well be that Merrick was an Inquisitor who had already died, or was just about to,
and it was Morgan Elspeth's magic that both saved him and kept him under her beck and call.
Come to life!
While the reveal of a character like Starkiller or Ezra as Merrick would have been thrilling,
none of the theories really made much sense when looking at the characters' pasts and the overall story of Ahsoka.
It was confirmed early on in the show that the story would be going to another galaxy,
something that other Star Wars characters wouldn't have much interest in
unless they also happened to have some kind of tie to or alliance with Thrawn.
Ezra would have had to return to the galaxy without Thrawn just to go back and get him with the rest of Morgan's team.
That makes no sense.
Having Merrick linked to the Nightsisters and their magic makes a lot more sense for this story and its characters.
