Every year, when traveling back and forth between Melbourne and Mildura, the most anticipated moment is the canola flower fields in spring. Starting from Melbourne and passing through Bendigo along the A79 heading northwest, you can see vast expanses of canola fields stretching endlessly to the horizon.

This time, I came prepared for my return to Melbourne – my phone, camera, and drone were all ready for action. I was gearing up for some stunning shots, but alas, my photography skills are lacking, and I'm more of a novice than a pro. So, I had to rely on editing to salvage some of my pride.

From my observations, some canola fields were already in full bloom by August, possibly due to a mild winter. However, some fields were planted later, so I estimate the flowering season will last for over a month. If you're planning a flower-watching trip, now's the time to arrange it.

You can see canola fields in the direction of Geelong and Bendigo, but be careful not to trespass into the fields. Farmers don't appreciate strangers entering their private property. If you want to capture the perfect shot, near Bendigo, Shiraz Republic Winery has opened the Canola Walk trail this year. You can immerse yourself in the fields for photography and even fly a drone there.
