Woke up all of a sudden and the doctors were sitting in front of me and saying, I'm so sorry, but unlike what we planned."
Arnold Schwarzenegger says he once almost died over a botched surgery.
The 76-year-old action icon discussed his third open-heart surgery in a new YouTube video,
saying the procedure's unexpected problems had him freaking out.
The valve replacement surgery was right before he filmed 2019's Terminator Dark Fate,
and the former California governor described waking up in the hospital
and doctors explaining to him that the procedure had caused unexpected internal bleeding.
We made a mistake and poked through the heart wall and therefore we had to kind of get
internal bleeding and they opened me up very quickly and to save your life."
Schwarzenegger said the mishap resulted in a difficult recovery,
sharing footage of himself walking down a hospital hallway,
first with a walker and then on his own holding a railing.
It's a disaster. I was in the middle of a disaster. So now it's how do I get out of it?
So you have to shift gears.
Schwarzenegger described first walking 10 steps and then progressing from there.
He noted the doctors recommended exercising his lungs
and cautioned that if he caught pneumonia, he could die.
Three months later, I started with Terminator 6. So I had to be in shape. I had to be able
to move around and run around, lift things up, do the fight scenes and all of this kind of thing.
So we did it.
Earlier this year, Schwarzenegger opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about his career
and personal life, during which he talked about his health and desire to live forever.
I still work out every day. I ride my bike every day. And I make movies.
Show business is another part of my life. I add in my life. I never subtract.
