Okay, this is just going to be a quick video to explain which Apple Pencil is compatible with which iPad.
So which Apple Pencil will you need for either the iPad you own or the iPad you plan to buy?
Now, there's a couple of ways of really telling this and one of the ways is really simple.
The first thing that I would advise is that you look at the iPad that you're looking to buy or own
and you can tell if it's one of the later ones, there should be on the bezel there,
there should be a charging and a pairing area.
So there's a little kind of lozenge shape connector there
and that is where the Apple Pencil 2 connects, charges, pairs, etc.
Now you can tell that the Apple Pencil 2 is designed for that purpose
because I don't know whether you can see on camera, but it has a flattened edge along the side.
That is specifically meant to attach and sit flat there on the top
and it's got magnets in it.
So it attaches neatly onto the side of this kind of iPad.
Now in terms of which iPads the Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with,
well, it's the iPad Pro 12.9-inch version, 3rd generation and later.
Now we do have a 4th generation and presumably we're going to have a 5th generation coming out soon too,
but the Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with the iPad Pro 12.9,
which is what this is diagonally, 3rd generation and later.
It is also compatible with the iPad Pro 11-inch, 1st generation and later.
Now the Apple Pencil 1 is a different thing completely really.
So this has been around for a number of years now.
It started on the original iPad Pros and the connector is very different.
So to charge and pair it, it has a lightning port connector
and you have to actually plug it directly in to the iPad.
Now it isn't the only method of charging it.
There is an adapter which now allows you to actually connect it to a cable
directly plugged into the wall socket.
But one of the really quickest, most efficient ways of doing that
was always to plug it straight into the iPad and you can see it's possible to do that.
It doesn't have a flat edge on the Apple Pencil
and it isn't possible to attach it anywhere on the side.
So if you have an iPad that has this kind of curved edge,
clearly it's not meant for the Apple Pencil that has the straight edge.
It's meant for the rounded Apple Pencil
and the one that has the appropriate lightning port male and female connectors.
So just to compare that again,
if you look at the Apple Pencil 2, it has the flat edge.
It has no way of connecting because this is a USB-C connector.
It doesn't have a cap that you can take off.
It has no way of interacting with that.
The way it interacts is entirely at the top.
So in terms of the iPads that are compatible with the original Apple Pencil,
the Apple Pencil 1, there's quite a lot of iPads.
If you are looking to buy a new iPad,
then pretty much all of the new iPads except for the iPad Pros
will be compatible with Apple Pencil 1.
So whether that's the basic iPad, the new iPad Minis,
the new iPad Airs or the new basic iPad,
all of the new ones should be compatible with the Apple Pencil 1.
But if you're looking to buy or already own an older iPad,
the ones that this is compatible with,
because it isn't compatible obviously with the first iPads that go back over 10 years,
the first iPads that were compatible with the Apple Pencil
was the first and second generation iPad Pro.
Now that was a 12.9-inch version, a large iPad.
Other iPads that the Apple Pencil is compatible with is the 10.9-inch iPad Pro,
the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which is what this actually is.
I started kicking around and use it for everyday purposes.
The Apple Pencil 1 is also compatible with an iPad Air third generation,
an iPad 7th and the older 6th generation,
and the iPad Mini 5th generation.
It isn't compatible with any of the normal iPads before the 6th generation
or any of the iPad Airs before the 3rd generation.
So it's quite a lot of different kinds of iPads that it is actually compatible with.
If you are looking for any iPad that's pretty much been within the last 12 to 24 months,
the general rule of thumb is going to be that it will be probably compatible with the Apple Pencil 1.
If it has a lightning port and it doesn't have a connector on the side,
it's going to be Apple Pencil 1.
Again, if it has a flat edge and it has that connector on the side,
it's for the Apple Pencil 2.
Now, if you want to know the big differences between the two different Apple Pencils,
then I also have a video explaining that.
Otherwise, I think you've got all the information that you need to make the right choices now.
