The famous Taj Mahal in Agra, India is one of the wonders of the world. Have you ever seen an inside tour? We also show you rare footage of Inside the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna River in the city of Agra, India. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658), to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed by 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 for being "a pearl of Islamic art in India and one of the world's heritage masterpieces admired around the world". Described by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as "a tear on the cheek of time", it is considered by many to be the finest example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history. The Taj Mahal attracts 7–8 million visitors each year.
Inside the Taj Mahal, monuments honoring Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are enclosed in an eight-sided chamber decorated with pietra dura (an inlay of semi-precious stones) and a marble screen. But the splendid monuments are just for show: The actual coffins lie in a quiet room below, at garden level.
