美国大学申请成功秘籍
Hi, I’m Dr. Zhang, and you’re here with me now on what used to be Radcliffe College, Harvard’s sister school before it became Co-ed in the early 1970s.
Today, we’re going to talk about 3 things to consider when writing your personal statement to make sure it is a good one. The first of which is going to be a good structure – think of your personal statement as a movie you’re showing. Movies have specific acts, for example the setup, the buildup, and the payoff, and each act has a purpose. So, your personal statement should reflect that as well. Each paragraph should have a clear and defined purpose to progress your narrative. What I recommend is before writing down the specifics or writing specific sentences, think about big picture – what’s the main focus of your story. What part of your growth or passion or interests or problem solving skills are you trying to demonstrate. Then, you can delineate with each paragraph what you’re going to show, and how you’re going to show it. And make sure not to overlap. If you’re going to talk about adversity in one paragraph and a specific aspect that shows your resilience, don’t double dip and write a second paragraph about the same thing that’s redundant. With only less than 650 words, you have to be efficient with your story telling. Another thing that I recommend you keep in mind is that a good personal statement has quality over quantity. Really expand one activity you did in depth, about one activity that you were heavily involved in and can write about and can show a lot of good attributes about you – whether that be people skills, your intellect, or just your initiative. Focus on one, don’t make your personal statement your resume except written in paragraph form. Finally, one of the most important things that you must consider to make a great personal statement – is balancing earned confidence with humility. Show them that you’re really passionate about something and that you know a lot about your field of interest, show them that you have initiative, show them that you learned a lot through your advanced coursework or your summer internships, but by no means make it seem like you feel like you already know everything, which will come off as arrogant. Nobody, not even PhDs, the top minds of their fields, can claim that they know everything. As Einstein once said, “the more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know.”
