Why can’t a professional manager be the CEO of a startup?
Recently, a startup in Vancouver was closed. I worked in this company for a while and contacted many people in this company. Let me talk about my opinion.
In the first phase, the company was intended to develop a social application for dining. At the beginning, they found an outsourcing company in Ukraine and wrote the prototype of the application, which took about 6 months.
In the second stage, the company found an outsourcing team in Suzhou, China, recruited various developers in Vancouver, and began to move to the second stage. I also entered the company at this stage. The leader is a professional manager. This person claims to be a technical origin, but does not understand web application development, does not understand the front end, does not understand the back end, does not understand the database, does not understand Angular, does not understand Android, does not understand iOS, in a word, he is almost has no technology used in this project as I understand,
How do we do that? He verbally raised the demand and then relied on qa to promote the programmer. At this stage, we missed the refactoring of the outsourced code and the overall re-planning. The new programmers did not understand the overall programming framework well. The addition of new features is rapidly advancing under the enormous pressure of project schedule. We missed a chance to make the existing foundation code robust and solid.
The advantage of this stage is that there is ample capital, and a large number of programmers are recruited in different categories. The downside is that this project has no core technical controllers from beginning to end, which leads to the appearance of the entire project looks professional, but it is full of loopholes.
The third stage of layoffs, the arrival of this stage, for my old programmer is also ordinary, but did not expect that the process is extremely fierce, in the following year, almost all developers have been removed.
During this period, the company moved its headquarters from metrotown to waterfront and tried every means to seek capital.
It’s a pity that it didn’t run into a big head.
In this way, the startup company was closed for about 4 years.
After I went through this matter, I fully realized the professional manager for the harm of a startup company. The job of the professional manager is to follow the steps, and let the outside people see a busy company, let the people inside see a very rich look, and ignores the ultimate goal which makes good products.
