Hurricane Hilary is bringing a tropical storm watch to parts of Southern California for the first time in history.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm reached category 4 status Friday morning.

Flood watches have been issued putting 25-million Americans in the Southwest on alert for high water.

Hurricane Hilary is about 400 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour.

The center of Hurricane Hilary is expected to approach Mexico's Baja Peninsula this weekend, bringing severe weather to the southwest.

The city of San Diego's office of emergency services says it's prepared.

If Hilary does make landfall in California as a tropical storm, it would mark the first time that's happened in nearly 84 years, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
