You’re a mile away from any public road, deep in the foothills of the Black Mountains and up an old drovers’ path among the trees, so you shan’t hear anything except sheep and birdsong – in Spring the dawn chorus will amaze you. Come to walk, birdwatch, stand under a waterfall, search for wild orchids, swing in a hammock or stargaze at night while tawny and barn owls swoop overhead. Cook outside on the firepit or indoors when it’s chilly – the kitchen has everything you need and is very well stocked. The lighting (solar) is superbly designed, there is underfloor heating and also a wood-burner so you’ll be warm and transfixed by the views, but your stay is all about the outdoors too. The owners’ farm (27 acres) is very self-sufficent – their water is from a natural spring, they grow their own vegetables and fruit trees and milk their goats. You can say hello to them along with their rare breed chickens, ducks, peacocks, guinea fowl and an emu if you choose, or keep to yourselves.

There’s a good pub, The Bridge Inn, five miles away so you could walk. Or hop in the car for The Carpenters Arms at Walterstone for excellent home cooked food. Sip local ale at Clodock or, if you want a Michelin star spot, then book yonks in advance and treat yourselves to The Walnut Tree. Explore beautiful villages on the Black and White Trail, try canoeing on the Wye or wild swimming in the Monnow near Skenfrith Castle. Book ahead and you can walk to the neighbouring farm to buy their cider and brandy – they have the only horse-powered cider mill in the country. Back in your nest you can read a book or watch a film while the wood-burner twinkles merrily and you decide that cider and brandy are rather splendid things.
