Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sure you've heard of the ice river, haven't you?
So today, I'm going to invite you to this beautiful city of Chamonix.
And then we're going to take a cruise ship to go up to the top.
And finally, we're going deep into the earth to explore an ice river called Mer de Glace.
And especially under that ice river, there's another surprise, guys.
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the What's So Great about France channel.
Ladies and gentlemen, a long time ago, many of us have joined with Tuan Tuan and his channel
to visit all over France.
But if we come to France and leave this Ossava area, it's a real shock, ladies and gentlemen.
So today, Tuan Tuan will lead you and your friends to follow the winding road in the air
under that ice river to get to a beautiful city called Chamonix.
It's written like Chamonix.
The first time I visited this place, I didn't know how to speak French.
So I said Chamonix.
But he said Chamonix.
This place is located in Ossava.
It's only about an hour's drive from my house.
About 70 kilometers east of Annecy.
And about 80 kilometers southeast of Geneva, Switzerland.
We're here, guys.
Looking at the houses and hotels here, you've seen my channel before.
You will realize that this place has a Savoyard culture.
The buildings and hotels are all built and covered with wood outside.
This Savoyard area includes Savoy, where my friend Van lives,
and Ossava, where I live.
And this place has its own culture, its own architecture.
In the past, people also used local words.
But in other parts of France, they didn't.
So if a stranger comes here and speaks Savoyard,
he won't understand.
Today, that language has also faded away.
However, the Savoyard culture always has its own color.
And it's a different color in the colorful picture
of French culture.
It's spring now, not the peak tourist season in France.
But we still see a lot of people on the street, right?
In Chamonix, every season, there are tourist attractions
that attract tourists to come here.
This season, people often eat oysters and limes.
Restaurants serve oysters and limes and seafood in general.
There's a nice building here, guys.
On its side, there's a huge painting.
It looks like it's real.
Chamonix is very beautiful, guys.
When I meet little kids who come from Chamonix,
they are very proud of their city.
In the summer, you will see a lot of flowers
scattered all over the city, on bridges, on streets,
and scattered all over the buildings, guys.
This is a small ship that takes tourists around the city.
This city is small, guys.
Just like the village of Yvoix,
and many other places in the Savoyard,
I advise you to visit this place
if you don't like the cold weather.
From the end of May to about August, September,
October is fine, October is the autumn season.
It's very beautiful, but it's not cold yet.
Guys, this is the ticket office
to visit the Madagascar ice rink.
This is the ship, guys.
Now it's going to the section
where there are two walls on both sides.
It looks like a tunnel.
From the ship, we can look down to the valley,
which is the city of Chamonix and its villages.
The ship is stopping, guys.
There is another ship going down the mountain,
and we will continue to go up.
The ship has arrived.
Can you see the dry river
and the stream below?
It looks like a road, right?
That's the sign of the dry river, guys.
From here, you can go cable car or walk
to visit the dry river.
My family often chooses to walk.
Walking down the mountain is very tiring,
but on the way back, there are flowers,
green grass, flowers everywhere.
And on the way down, we can also see
the traces of the dry river
through different years.
We saw the dry river in 1820,
now it's 1920, which is 100 years ago.
And in this picture, you can see
that from 1985 to 2020,
the dry river has decreased by 115 meters,
only in 35 years.
And this dry river is 1,500 meters high
from the sea level.
It is about 7 kilometers long,
and is the third largest dry river
in the Alps.
The thickness of this dry river
is about 150 meters.
And every year, it still flows evenly,
that's why it has decreased gradually.
Of course, every year there is still snow
and a new amount of ice is created.
However, scientists say that
that new amount of ice
does not compensate for the melted ice.
This is the stream running
under the stairs we are walking on.
And over there is the cliff
standing upright from the bottom of the ice river
to the top of the cliff over there.
Can you see the 2015 peak?
That was the first time I visited this ice river.
And now I'm at this position,
right here,
so I can visit it.
But now we have to go down again,
because every year it drops to 3 to 5 meters.
You see a lot of visitors, right?
People come in from morning to evening
until the last boat returns to the city.
It's very crowded.
Every year, there are up to a million tourists
visiting this place.
We have reached the cave.
Now let's go inside
to visit the ice river.
This is where people push the ice into
and we go inside to visit it.
My brothers and sisters
are all wearing short skirts
to visit the ice river.
I'm wearing a few layers,
but I still feel cold.
And the ice melts, it flows,
like a house that has been demolished.
You can see on the left
a statue of a bear,
a flat bear.
People also create some statues like this,
just a few, 3 or 4,
with a bar counter.
In fact, people also create a few
to attract tourists.
Visitors come to visit,
they have this and that to see and take pictures.
They also limit the impact on the ice layer.
Because this is a natural layer,
they don't want it to melt quickly.
But whether it affects or not,
it still melts naturally every year.
But if it affects, it will melt faster.
Visitors come here to check in,
to take pictures at this bar counter.
This is the bar counter,
and people also hang information here
to learn more about this place.
As you can see in this picture,
in the past, the snow was still high above
where I stopped earlier.
And now it has to go down very deep.
Do you see the snow?
This ice river was formed in the 17th century
due to the movement of the flow
of two other ice rivers above the spring.
At an altitude of about 4,000 meters,
there are two ice rivers,
and the convergence of the two ice rivers
creates this ice river.
In the 1900s, the nobles of the French and
Western countries began to organize
tourist tours to explore this ice river.
At that time, to create caves like the one
we just visited, they used very rough limestone.
And the conditions for digging in the ice
were very difficult,
more difficult than digging in the ground or in the ice.
But today, the excavators have been replaced
by excavators, so it is much better.
We can't see it with the naked eye,
but this ice river still flows at a speed
of 120 meters per year on the surface
and 90 meters below.
And do you know, right under this ice river,
that is, in the ground, people built
a hydropower plant with water reservoirs
as you can see in front of me here.
That is the amount of melted water,
and people use it to produce electricity.
And you see, the ceiling of those water reservoirs
is the layer of ice, right?
That is the bottom of the layer of ice
that they dug out the hole for us to go in here.
French tourism to leave Osawa is a must,
but when you come to Osawa,
don't miss this place, guys.
French President Emmanuel Macron
also checked in here.
After visiting the Mer de Glace ice river,
we can go down to the street to visit
You can pick up a boat to go around the city like this.
The city is very beautiful.
And you can also pick up a bicycle
called Vélib to rent.
It's also good to run around the city.
The city is so beautiful.
If you are a fan of format food,
don't forget to enjoy Fondue,
which is a melting format food here.
Spring is coming and summer is coming.
If you haven't been to Osawa yet,
please come here once.
And now I would like to say thank you and goodbye.
