When Kobe Bryant was 12 years old, he went to a summer basketball camp and he was about
to give up basketball forever.
Because it left him feeling like a disgrace.
He played against some of the most talented players and they embarrassed him so much that
he felt like a failure.
Kobe Bryant did not score a single point entire summer.
Zero.
That's the number of points I scored the entire summer.
He was so disappointed in himself that he was questioning whether basketball was really
for him.
He felt like he didn't have a talent and what it takes to be a good player.
So he was seriously considering just giving up.
His father was a retired NBA player.
So Kobe felt like he was disappointing the entire family.
I was putting my family to shame.
I considered maybe just giving up basketball and just focusing on soccer.
Here's where my respect and admiration for Michael Jordan was forged.
I learned that he had been cut from his high school team as a freshman.
I learned he knew what it felt like to be embarrassed, to feel like a failure.
But he used those emotions to fuel him, make him stronger.
He didn't quit.
So I decided to take on my challenge the same way he did.
I would channel my failure as a fuel to keep my competitive fire burning.
I became obsessed with proving to my family, and more importantly, to myself, that I can
do this.
It became an obsession.
I learned everything about the game, the history, the players, the fundamentals.
I wasn't just determined to never have a summer of zero again.
I was driven to inflict the same sense of failure on my competition as they unknowingly
inflicted on me.
My killer instinct to score was born.
So in his high school years, every day he would go to the gym at 5 a.m. and would not
leave until 7 p.m.
Hours before his teammates showed up for practice, Kobe was already there practicing by himself,
sometimes even without a ball.
He was always the first player in the gym, even when injured.
Pain doesn't tell you when you ought to stop.
Pain is the little voice in your head that tries to hold you back, because it knows if
you continue, you will change.
He forced himself to make 400 shots every single practice, and all of his hard work
paid off.
He entered the NBA directly from high school and won five NBA championships.
Kobe Bryant played his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers.
He was the second-youngest NBA player in history.
In 2008, he was voted the NBA's most valuable player.
He went on to win two gold medals with the USA men's basketball team.
All of his hard work led Kobe to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
He played with the Lakers for 20 seasons before his retirement in 2016.
He became a legend.
And it was not only his talent.
It was his willpower to not quit and practice every single day.
He even won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.
But sadly, a big tragedy happened.
Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter died in a helicopter crash.
He was flying with his daughter Gianna and seven other people when the helicopter went
down.
The world is still shaken and in tears.
Kobe Bryant will be remembered as a basketball legend.
He'll go down as one of the best to ever play the game.
But Kobe Bryant was so much more.
He was far more than a basketball giant.
He was a hero.
And always seemed larger than life.
He was and will be an inspiration for many.
And the fact that he and his daughter are not among the living anymore is a reminder
that we take life for granted.
We waste so much time feeling unhappy, feeling like failures, disappointed, scared.
But why?
Life is so short.
Go after your dreams.
Do what makes you happy.
Say I love you more.
Forgive.
Be grateful for what you have.
Don't wait for the perfect moment to tell people how you feel.
That moment may never come.
Because tomorrow is not granted.
Have a good time.
Enjoy life.
Life is too short to get bogged down and be discouraged.
You have to keep moving.
You have to keep going.
Put one foot in front of the other.
Smile and just keep on rolling.
So what's your story?
