My name is Jesse St Louis (AKA Infamous JSL) and I'm an actor that likes to go on awesome adventures between gigs. I've been called a "no frills Bear Grylls" and the bald Bourdain. But mostly I've been called an Actor. Traveler. Smart-ass.
Hey, what's up?
We're in Big Bear, California.
We're here to check out some of this skiing.
Last minute trip, decided to try to fight the traffic
out here Friday night and check out the conditions.
I haven't been skiing in 15 years,
so this is gonna be an interesting adventure.
So let's check it out.
♪♪♪
Conditions are beautiful out here.
Today, the first day, we're hitting off Snow Valley,
it's called, and tomorrow we're gonna hit Snow Summit.
Spring conditions, supposed to get up in the 50s today.
It's freezing right now.
It's, like, below 30 degrees, which 32 degrees is freezing.
So, yes, it's freezing, literally.
Um, this is stupid.
I'm a liar, okay?
Just want you guys to know that.
Um, I'm not in Big Bear right now.
We were in Big Bear last weekend,
and I don't even, it's not cold.
We're, you know, I'm at home right now.
I'm in my apartment trying to, uh,
shoot some filler footage.
I don't even have pants on.
Like, I have shorts on, but, um, I'm sorry for lying.
It's, uh, let me tell you, let me explain what happened.
Okay, here's the deal.
We went skiing last weekend,
and I didn't bring any camera gear, um,
because I was afraid that I was gonna get injured
trying to film myself skiing
when I haven't been skiing in 15 years.
So, I was like, I just want to focus on skiing,
getting back into it, getting in the groove,
not getting injured.
So, a couple things happened.
First, the skiing came back, like, very quickly.
So, immediately I started regretting
not bringing the camera gear.
We shot some footage with our cell phones,
just some nice footage.
Um, I was looking at it, and I was thinking,
you know, it's been a while since I made a YouTube video.
So, um, which every time it's been a while
that I've made a video, I always start thinking, like,
what am I doing this for if I can't be consistent?
Because everything I read says, uh,
to have a YouTube channel, you need to be consistent.
Some people say you have to upload every day.
Some people say, at the bare minimum, upload once a week.
So, I haven't been doing that, I'm sorry.
Um, but part of me is just like,
what the **** am I doing?
Like, sometimes, I'll be honest,
I don't know if it's just because I
shoot the video and edit it.
Sometimes I don't even want to watch my own ******* video.
So, I'm not sure if that means that the video's crappy.
Uh, I'm not sure.
I've been trying everything I can to gain subscribers.
I've basically burned out my social media.
People on Facebook and stuff like that,
they don't give a ---- about my YouTube channel.
Um, or I should say, I feel like I publicize it too much
on social media for minimal results.
I mean, granted, Facebook does suppress YouTube videos now,
so then you have to upload it to Facebook
and then be like, oh, but this is actually
from my YouTube channel.
So, um, here's this Facebook video,
but subscribe to my YouTube channel.
It's just like SEO and learning all this ----.
Like, it's interesting, it's a new skill,
but it's taking a lot of time,
and I'm just not seeing, initially,
my goal for this year was 10,000 subscribers.
I realize now that was very ambitious.
But I'm grateful for all the subscribers I have.
473, 474, I think.
But I'm just not seeing the growth.
Probably because I'm not uploading constantly.
So, it's like this catch-22.
Like, I don't upload constantly,
or I should say continuously, regularly,
and then I don't get the following,
so then I'm like, well, if I can't upload,
maybe I should stop doing the channel.
I guess I just need some feedback from you guys.
Okay, so anyway, back to the skiing video.
So, I was like, you know what?
I'm gonna make a skiing video,
and I'll just pretend like I'm in Big Bear
and shoot some fill-in narration ----.
But then, just doing that, it felt so stupid.
Like, I, clearly I'm an actor, but this is not acting.
You know, this is just my channel being myself.
You know, that's why I curse a lot.
Some people say I curse too much.
Karen Andrus says that I curse too much.
But this is me being honest, this is me being me.
So, that whole thing,
dressing up like I was still skiing, is ridiculous.
I'm sorry, I'm a liar, I lied.
But I will promise you this.
Unless I'm pretending to adopt a son off Craigslist,
which is just ridiculous and hilarious,
I will always give you the honest truth,
and that's what I want to do with this channel,
is just be honest.
Honestly, I feel like, after my last video,
going after the water slide,
I had a little bit of negative feedback on that,
because maybe I used a clickbaity title.
I didn't think it was that clickbaity.
We were looking for a natural water slide.
Some people were like, you never made it to the slide.
That's the truth.
That's the reality of the adventure we went on.
We didn't make it to the water slide.
So, I'm sorry if I misled you.
But anyway, I'm gonna try to make up for this skiing video.
To make up for this skiing video.
It doesn't have to be called a fiasco, but this situation.
I have a really cool video planned,
and I don't want to say what it is now,
because somebody's probably gonna copy it.
Somebody's probably already done it, for all I know.
But this will be a new thing for me.
I think it's a cool idea.
We're gonna do it in the next,
maybe this weekend, within the next couple weeks.
But I have like three videos in the pipeline
that I've just been working on.
I'm really excited to get this self-defense
for travelers video out that my friend Cody shot with me.
There's a lot of footage.
I'm probably gonna make two versions.
A shortened version, and then an extended cut.
But I've been working on that,
and I'm really excited for you guys to see that.
I'm not even caffeinated right now.
Usually I'm caffeinated when I go on my rants.
What else was I gonna say?
Oh yeah, to anyone out there who is an actor,
and I've met a lot of actors in L.A.,
and I talk to them about doing a YouTube channel,
and what they say is they don't wanna water down their,
I don't remember what they wanna,
they don't wanna water themselves down.
Okay, all I can say to you is,
if you don't have a YouTube channel,
you're behind all these other young kids
with their YouTube channels,
because they're doing it all.
Not all of them, some of them are.
Taking classes, getting coaching,
taking improv classes, getting great headshots,
producing their own content.
They got a shitload of social media followers,
and they have a YouTube channel.
Now, if you are an actor,
and you think you're too big for a YouTube channel,
I would like to direct your attention to Exhibit A.
A gentleman known as The Rock.
The Rock has a ******* YouTube channel, okay?
Are you bigger than The Rock?
Are you trying to say,
oh, I'm a serious actor, The Rock is a movie star,
he can do that because he's a movie star.
The Rock, first of all, whether he's a movie star,
he's still a ******* actor.
The Rock is an actor.
Okay, let me share something with you.
I am a thespian.
I've done theater, okay?
Just because I do YouTube videos
doesn't mean I'm not a serious, trained actor, you know?
Nobody wants to go on YouTube
and watch serious ******* acting.
That's not why people go to YouTube.
Hey, if that's what you do on YouTube,
you're getting hits, you're getting views,
subscribers, that's cool.
But nobody wants me to sit here and do a,
my gentle puck, come hither.
Thou rememberest since once I sat upon a promontory
and heard a mermaid and dolphins back uttering
such dulcet and harmonious breath
that the rude sea grew civil at her song.
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres
to hear the seamate's music.
Nobody wants to see Shakespeare on YouTube.
Nobody wants theater.
This is YouTube, it's its own thing.
And take it from me, it's a hard thing to master.
So I give props to all those kids
with the quick cuts, jump cuts,
and the effects and all this ----
because they've mastered the editing,
they've mastered the psychology of this YouTube thing.
It's its own thing.
So if you're an actor, if you want to get ahead,
if you want to learn new skills,
because I'm learning digital marketing,
social media marketing, SEO, editing,
even, you know, camera work and sound stuff,
I'm learning all that stuff
because I want to improve my videos.
So I guess my point is if you're an actor
and you say you don't want to have a YouTube channel
because you don't want it to water you down,
why are you at the same time doing extra work, okay?
Oh, because somebody can meet me on set
and then I could get a big break.
Okay, dude, look, your chances of getting a big break
from doing extra work are probably less
if not as good as somebody discovering you on YouTube.
In fact, your chances of breaking through on YouTube
are a lot greater than someone pulling you out of the crowd
on an extra work gig and saying,
oh, this guy, I'd like to give him a line.
Why not make a video, gets a million views,
and a million people see you
as opposed to maybe someone pulls you out of the crowd
and says, oh, that dude needs to say a line.
You, sir, we'd like you to say,
do you want fries with that?
Yeah, that's your big break right there.
Do you want fries with that?
Hey, but who am I?
I'm not the Rock, right?
I have a YouTube channel.
I'm not as successful as him.
I will tell you, though, I enjoy going on these adventures.
I hope you guys enjoy the videos.
I'm trying to get better with the editing,
with the shooting.
It's sometimes disheartening
because I feel like I'm not making progress on my channel.
It's like up and down, and then I'm like,
you know what, I just gotta buckle down
and I gotta try and put out more videos
because that seems to be the key.
I have a couple cool things coming up.
I'm editing two things in the pipeline.
I hope you stick around.
If you like this rant or this video,
or maybe you like this shirt,
perhaps you're a Star Wars fan.
I, too, am a Star Wars fan.
Did you know it's based on the work of Joseph Campbell?
He was a mythology professor at Columbia University.
Anyway, if you like this,
you should stick around for one of my caffeinated rants
because this is a just-woken-up,
first thing in the morning rant.
Just imagine if I had a little caffeine in me.
I hope that you don't necessarily
have to give this video a thumb up
because I don't even know
if I would give this video a thumb up,
but just maybe hit the subscribe button.
Subscribe, I don't know.
I know you're concerned about the beard.
I look old.
I look old as dirt with this beard.
I am growing this beard for a movie,
so I apologize for the father-time-looking beard
with all this gray staring me in the face,
my own mortality staring me in the face.
Anyway, growing it for a movie.
Hopefully, shoot that movie soon
and shave this biatch off.
Stick around, subscribe.
Thanks for watching.
Peace out.
