Now I'll explain to you in a moment how the hell we ended up out here
drifting around in the middle of the Indian Ocean between Australia and
Indonesia. But for now I've got to see if I can
catch some food.
Would you take your chances? That's all we want.
That's how we're going to hopefully turn saltwater into freshwater.
Oh you are joking. No way. Over the next few days I'm recreating this
lost at sea survival challenge. This was without a
doubt the worst experience of my life. It was about 2am
we were on board a larger boat that was towing my smaller boat the
Salty Dingo back from a big trip at sea. At this
point in time we're about 100 miles off the coast of
and a big storm hit us. The weather turned so rough that my boat that was
being towed broke its tow point and then drifted off
into the ocean. I had a decision to make whether
we left the boat there that night or whether to jump overboard
and get back on the boat and then do my best to drive it back to mainland
Australia. In the heat of the moment I couldn't say goodbye to my beloved
Salty Dingo. So I jumped overboard into the ocean and
basically then started the the worst experience of my life. Once
I'd made it to the boat over the next 12 hours was the the longest 12 hours of
my life. I had a lot of time to think what would I do
if the Salty Dingo sunk. It was every chance it was going to sink. If that
bilge pump stopped for you know a matter of
minutes the whole boat would have sunk. Or whether the already broken and
damaged hull was broken apart further causing the boat to sink. I had a lot of
time to think. That's why this is hoping to replicate like a piece of that
fiberglass boat. What was going through my mind is I
would have just had to grab something that floated and hang on for dear life.
Also would have been going for one of the the many hand lines I had on board
and that's what I've got at the moment. Just sort of trying my best to see if I
can get lucky and catch something here for a bit of food.
So that's what the survival challenge is all about today guys. What if, like what
would have happened if the Salty Dingo went down that day
and were adrift at sea. That's what we're doing. One thing's for certain my time
on board a little raft like this would be very limited. So I'm going to need to
get ashore. I'm going to need food. I'm going to need water and I'm going to
need shelter. How exactly we go about all those things
I'm not sure yet. But after a while floating here the fish actually become
attracted to a floating object like this. It becomes almost a fish
aggregation device. There's a few smaller fish swimming around underneath
me that look like rainbow runner. This is probably my best chance.
I've just got a bite. I've just got a bite. Holy moly.
This is I think bigger than what we had in mind. This is something big here it's
told me. What is it? Oh holy moly.
Holy this is this is big. Oh no my hand line.
This thing's big. Perhaps too big. It's tolling the raft around.
Holy smokes. This could either have me eaten for a week
and in heartbreak. Come on. Come on. Come on. What is it? What is it? What is it?
Oh no. Oh no. This is a big shark. Oh no. That's not what I wanted.
Oh no wonder it was so fast. That was a shark and that was my one hook.
Oh bugger. Oh he's just here. Holy. He's just here. Well there goes our chance of
catching something with a hand line. Oh bugger. There's definitely a few sharks
down there now. Oh there's a couple of them here.
I'm gonna try keep my limbs on board this at all times.
Oh that's a bigger shark. That one. I'll have to keep an eye on him.
Oh now I'm feeling and looking a lot like a turtle.
Wasn't expecting that one. As we get closer to the isle this swell turns into
a wave. Crashing on the reef. Uh oh. Oh no.
A knife into my private spots as well. We've got to get out of this surf zone
and get into the isle. Oh it's a big set coming here.
Hang on.
Just wanted to share something really quickly with you guys. So it was the
misadventure that we're recreating today was the reason
AG1 first came onto my radar and they are now offering us
our best deal yet. A 90 day money back guarantee.
So when planning for this trip I knew I wasn't going to have any cold storage or
ice or esky on board which meant we won't be able to store
fruit or veggies on this remote sand island. So we needed a comprehensive yet
convenient solution for the daily nutrients that our body
was going to need out there. And that is exactly what AG1 provides.
Been out here for about a week and as you guys know we're
just surviving from the ocean. So on these types of trips you never quite
know what the day is going to throw at you from
the boat being smashed up on the tow out there to
the unwelcome foreign visitors throughout the night. Three
figures have pulled in on the beach and are slowly walking this way.
And then the ordeal which we are recreating in today's survival episode.
But whatever happens you need your body firing at a hundred percent
and that's where the morning routine of AG1 really helps out. So you can access
that special offer through the link in the bio guys. Remember you've got a 90
day money back guarantee so there's really
no better time to try than now guys. That link will also get all B2B viewers
plus a year's supply of vitamin D3 plus K2.
Enjoy guys. Now if by chance I was lucky enough to get ashore
we're now stranded on a tropical island and the next challenge begins.
We're going to need to gather food, water, shelter.
Let's get started. All right now that I've made it ashore I can't just sit
under the shade of a palm tree. I need to see what we've got to work
with here. Basically in these conditions I reckon I've got
maybe two days without water and two weeks without food until I perish so
I need to be proactive. Basically the goal needs to be not just to survive but
to aim to thrive out here. So we're going to go for a walk see if
there's anything that can help us with water
or food. This entire bank here has been eroded away in that big storm.
See sort of like a meter of erosion but what that does mean this whole bank
is now food. It's going to be tough to get into but these coconut trees we can
actually eat them later on. But first priority has got to be water.
To be honest I don't really know what I'm going to try do yet but I'm just
going to try and find as much useful waste that's
washed in and then we'll see what we can come up with.
This is a Cinderella story after all. Solard
didn't know they made green cans. Here is a little gold mine. Any of these
back eddies like this where the tide comes in and washes all the plastic back
for it to get trapped is a good spot to look.
Would you take your chances? I don't think so. I'll give it a snip.
So I'm at the very top of the windward side of the island. This is where
everything washes in. You can see behind me here.
I've found lots of bottles. I'm just trying to find anything else that could
be useful. I'd love to find something I could use
to boil water. Something I could put on top of a fire.
That is a good sign. Means there's crayfish off here which are obviously a
great source of food. I've got to get my shirt on. It's getting
seriously hot out there and if I do make it through the survival challenge I
definitely don't want to be dying of skin cancer so
let's cover up. I've collected a heap of these plastic bottles and plastic
and the hope is that I can turn these into a couple of different contraptions
that can provide me drinking water. Out here I'm obviously surrounded by salt
water. You can't drink that. In order to try and
turn the salt water into fresh water we can drink
we need to set up something that's called desalination.
The first thing I'm going to do is set up a solar still
with one of these plastic bags and actually quite ironically
it was one of these plastic bags which was my biggest threat while I was in the
Salty Dingo that night and driving home. So we'd used a bag
just like this to collect a lot of little plastic before we left the
sand cave but then on the trip home when I was in the
boat all this plastic had broken through the
with it being so rough waves are crashing over the side it meant the
bilge pump was on the entire time the bilge pump
pumps the water from inside the boat out so that was keeping me afloat
but any little piece of plastic that went in
and potentially clogged up the pump the boat would have sunk in a matter of
minutes so I was kind of cursing this plastic bag
full of rubbish the whole entire trip home but now
let's use it to see if it can provide us with a bit of drinking water.
All right first step we're going to dig a big hole I've come down here to where
the sand is damp because we actually want to use the
moisture in the sand and the tide is dropping now which
means it's basically a perfect time to do this
do this right here probably have about 10 hours of that tide being out before it
eventually comes back into this point perfect see
I've got down to water now that's all we want
this is still salt water so we can't drink this but that's the moisture we
want all right you want to do this through the
hottest part of the day in broad sunlight and out of the wind
if you can if you're by the ocean side or a water
source you want to get down to some moisture down there if you're
in the desert or something like that you can actually use green leaves
and this solar steel will suck the fresh water out of the leaves we'll do a bit
of both all right I think we're good to go let's get
some leaves this looks like full of moisture these ones all right
so this is what my drinking water will collect in
I'll give it a bit of a wash out made the hole a little bit big here I just
need to close it in a bit all right finishing touches I've just
topped it up with a bit of salt water so we got as much moisture in there
as we can get and now we'll close him up and let this sun
do its work oh actually no there's one final very important thing
and the final touch this coconut basically x marks the spot
and that is creating the lowest point so what we're doing all that moisture
through the leaves and the salt water is evaporating
hitting this plastic and then as it condenses it's then going to run down to
this coconut and collect for our drinking water let's
see how it goes you can see already there's moisture on the underside which
I'm hoping is the fresh water we're going to eventually drink all right so I
want to set up a couple of these different water traps
that are working for us through the heat of the day while we then can go and
start looking for food this one I've never done it before but the
theory is the same as the solar still we got one big plastic bottle
one small plastic bottle let's see how we go first step
chop the base off your bigger bottle all right step number two
we're going to fold this lip up on itself step number three chop the top
off the smaller bottle so this is what we're left with this
smaller one's going to be we're going to fill with salt water
place it in here full of salt water that salt water
is going to be heated by by the sun evaporate up hit the lid of this
where it's then going to condense cool down and
fresh water is going to drip down the outside and be caught in that lip that's
how we're going to hopefully turn salt water
into fresh water let's see how we go perfect
sits nice and snug around it put this in the sun here
all right now with this one I imagine a glass or a can would be better
I reckon it'd store the heat more and evaporate quicker but I just couldn't
find one that would fit perfectly and didn't have holes in it so we'll
see how we go with plastic on plastic all right while our water makers are
doing their best here in the sun let's go for a walk and see if we can
find any food of course while I was driving that boat I was
wearing my mask as the the waves are crashing over the boat
uh the salt spray my eyes was just like agonizing so I had a mask on all
through the night so now when it comes to the survival challenge the mask is
really actually going to come in handy because it's going to allow me to have a
bit of a swim offshore uh where there's potentially food source
for us as that tide's dropping out now leave
some of these rock pools exposed it's a great spot to look for something to
eat let's see how we go there's little snails like this which I
can eat isn't this crazy that this was once a turban shell a snail
and then it's now fossilized into the rock actually there's lots of these
shells fossilized into the rock that's really
really quite cool I think we're hundreds of years too late to eat those shells so
we'll keep looking oh see what I see there's a moray eel
too many bones and not enough meat in them when they're that size but if we do
get desperate a little bit later they are a source of food
this moray eel has got an amazing hunting spot here there's some rapids
pushing down he's based at the bottom of the pool and any crabs or anything come
over his head he's just he's getting them it's amazing that
they're comfortable going fully out of the water getting up on the rocks
and slipping around looking for a feed actually while that sun is directly
overhead I'm going to try use that to get a fire going
so I've come back to back to base camp here and this is a good sign
look at all that condensation here all that's that fresh water
up the top there that should be then dripping down into the lip how's this
guy going there's a double layer so it's a bit
hard to tell this here's where I'm going to try get a fire going directly
exposed to the sun and a nice wind barrier so pretty much
right here I'll just get all the ingredients I need
I've got some shavings of the perfect kindling in there
got the sun at just the right angle hitting that hopefully that creates an
ember when it does we get the other kindling on
and up she goes that's the plan oh my eyes come on come on come on
oh my eyes there we go yes yes yes yes
oh we're away we're away we're finally freaking away oh I really get this
cranking and then I'll actually take it up
into the shade and out of the sun oh finally oh that's a huge relief so the
game plan is now you can keep going all afternoon and
then we gotta go find some food all right once this bloke gets started
once that one gets started that'll burn all afternoon
it should still be going once we get back oh yes
low hanging coconuts while we're waiting for our water traps to work these will
keep us hydrated perfect nice juicy coconut oh nice
beautiful good for eating good for drinking
that's good all right let's see if we can go find something to eat
oh I think I've spotted a slipper tray over the other side of this bommie I'm
gonna go the other side and try
oh you are joking no way
these guys the slipper craze are so well camouflaged I wasn't sure if I'd seen
one actually from the other side I might have spotted
two eyes so I thought I just stuck my hand in there and hoped for the best
and uh I just felt something moving but luckily they don't move too much they
just fully rely on their camouflage and I was able to just pick him up but I
just wanted to show you what they look like
when they camouflage themselves look at that
I've got a knife here so I'll just quickly um finish this guy off and we'll
take him back he's gonna be dinner still smoking which is a good sign we'll
be able to get this guy going all right that'll smoke up and then
eventually light but we've got a couple of hours of light left
I still need to build a shelter so that's probably next on the priority
list there we go oh tougher than I thought
these big salty bits of driftwood they'll just kind of smoke away and burn
for hours and hours so you can leave them
and by the time you come back even if the fire is out there'll be enough heat
in them to to get the fire going again the water
running down when I do that between bamboo and coconuts you can do a
lot of good things I think we just need three bits of
bamboo need a third one oh the anglerfish
perfect I think this here is a pretty good spot for the shelter
that fire will have a bit of smoke coming over us to keep the bugs off
and we have a bit of shade through the day just do a bit of a tidy up
one cross member here it's gonna go a pretty simple
lean to with three bits of bamboo and some palm fronds
that means we just need to give ourselves a little bit of shelter
oh tie that down pretty good there we are room for one it's no
Taj Mahal but a bit of shelter we're right out of the wind here so it
doesn't need to be too sturdy and this will do this will do for the
night I need to get something a little bit
extra for dinner tonight I've got my eyes on a couple of these coconut trees
let's go see if we can find the perfect one so all palm trees
in the core of them have a something called a heart the heart of palm
coconuts are no exception and it's edible but if you do remove this the
tree will die although all these unfortunately are all
doomed kind of like a smorgasbord of coconut
heart of palms here ready to be eaten they're all perfect perfect timing
really this tree is probably a good size for us
to have a bit of a crack out with the little knife
the heart we're after is about here just back from the fronds
under about here to get to it we've got to chop away at all these
see this core here this is all edible all right there's the top half of the
tree oh that's a bit of edible stuff in there
yeah that's good that's good got a bit to go still oh here we go
we're getting there all right this is the bit we're interested in
I'll clean this up a bit but this is the bit we're interested in the core
in here peel the outer layers away and then all that shiny
interior is what we want to eat that's the heart of palm
coconuts aren't they just amazing hey there's so much you can do with them so
many different parts you can eat and here's the heart of palm shave the
dirty parts off it's coming home for dinner all right
it's now the moment of truth to check our water source you can see
down here on the lip it's caught a bit of water take the
salt water out it's very hot i think something other some little
sand flies have gotten in there to be honest there's not much there's a
little bit there's a little bit but i guess the moment of truth let's see
whether we've turned salt water into fresh drinking water i'm gonna get a
mouthful of sand flies here but be a bit of revenge because they don't
they don't mind biting me it's definitely fresh water
there's a hint of salt because the bottle was obviously covered in salt but
that is definitely fresh drinking water so that's a success a minor success i
think for long term we um there's no shortage of plastic
bottles so we'll kind of put a whole series of these in here and uh
that'll get us a little bit but this is what i always had the highest
hopes for let's check how our solar still went
let all that raw water run down to the lowest point
trying to get the last of those water droplets in the right spot
oh there's some serious heat in there that's like an oven at the moment we've
got some water we have got some water moment of truth
oh you little beauty we have managed to turn
salt water into fresh water it's not that much
you know like a cup but at the end of the day
that could be like all we need to survive another day
combined with the hydration of coconuts that we've got yeah this is an essential
kind of skill to have if you're ever stuck on a
tropical island oh beauty you can see it's just sucked
the moisture out of all these leaves i can't believe how hot it is in here
be able to cook the um the lobster in here just put him straight in like an
oven well i will set that up again for
tomorrow all right for this slipper cray they also get commonly called a bug you
might know them as i'm just going to give him a nice bed of coals there
and put him in it's kind of like an oven in there at the moment
oh that's hot i have i've never had one like this cooked on the fire to be
honest they're just so well camouflaged they're not as rare as you think there
are actually a fair few of them around but they're
pretty hard to find being so well camouflaged they do come out at night
time and kind of graze over the shallows that's probably your best bet to try find
them i think he's done just perfectly let him cool down for a minute
all right dinner and lunch is served so on the night of the incident guys when i
jumped overboard in that backpack i did have a personal eperb a personal
location device of course if the salt didn't go sunk i would have set that off
but just due to the remoteness of where we are i can't imagine there'd be any
rescue attempt within a couple of days so now that we made it ashore the game
plan is to of course stay hydrated with the solar
stills the coconuts where we can there's plenty of food getting around
with all the heart of palms lining the beach
i'd be looking for seafood when i could i got pretty lucky with this bug here
but basically get in that type of routine
keep the morale up and just kind of cross your fingers that uh that rescue's
not too far away just chop these bugs straight in half
like you would a a um a crayfish oh it's a bit hot i'm
just gonna let that cool down for a sec these bugs are actually my favorite
seafood i think they're kind of sweet like a prawn but
um cross with a crayfish oh that is just delicious guys amazing
now this incident we've recreated guys was without a doubt the worst
moment of my life and it's something i hope to never
go through ever again and with this survival challenge i've certainly had
luck on my side to end up in a tropical island like this
eating a crayfish and coconut and i definitely cannot rely on that being the
case but it's probably just a bit of a
reminder for everyone guys the ocean can be
a horrible place so look after yourself when you're out there and that's it for
this episode guys i'm going to get into the rest of this food
and hopefully that rescue boat's not too far away in the meantime tell your mom
you love them and look after your mates see you on the next episode guys cheers
