Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan has left the club to join Barcelona following the expiration of his contract.
Gundogan leaves Manchester on the back of the club's greatest season, lifting the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies within the space of a month.
He spent seven years at the Etihad Stadium since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2016, and manager Pep Guardiola had publicly hinted at his own desire to extend that stay further.
Gundogan was in talks with City over a new deal ahead of his contract expiry at the end of this week.
But first, just 16 days after leading Manchester City to their first
Champions League title which secured the treble, Ilkay Gundogan has left to join
Barcelona on a free transfer after seven years with the club. During his time at the Etihad,
the German midfielder made 304 appearances across all competitions. He scored 60 goals.
This season, he capped in the side to their most successful of all seasons.
So Gundogan now joins Barca on a two-year deal with the option of a third and a release clause
of 400 million euros. Well, Gundogan might need a new trophy room in Barcelona because he leaves
City after, look at this, a trophy-laden career, winning five Premier League titles, two FA Cups,
four League Cups and of course the Champions League in his final game.
Well, they won't be for much longer but Gundogan and Pep are actually neighbours. Pep made no secret
of his desire to keep the midfielder at City and often spoke glowingly of his qualities on and off
the pitch. He's so important player and humanity and leading with silence and you have to talk,
everybody listen and this is so important. It's not how many bad times you talk, you know,
care. A football player defined perfectly, so a player attacking midfielder is the guy who has a
sense of goal and is so intelligent in the movement and every movement he has to do,
he's in the right position. He can play a holding midfielder, so yeah,
the one of the exceptional players in all senses. Incredible remark.
I mean, would you like him to stay?
I love him. I adore him.
I'm married but I adore him.
