The Intense Biodiversity of Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of the world's most intensely bio diverse countries and is one of the premiere destinations for thrill seekers and eco tourists alike. It's tropical beaches, abundant waterfalls, lush rain forests and active volcanoes provide a stunning array of scenic microclimates. This diversity of landscape is also home to a huge array of flora and fauna. Despite making up only 0.03% of the Earth's surface, Costa Rica contains nearly 6% of the world's biodiversity. These naturally occurring plants, animals, and fungi comprise more than 500,000 different species, nearly 300,000 of which are insects. Hundreds of Costa Rica's species, including the red poison dart frog, occur nowhere else on Earth. Nearly 900 bird species have been recorded in Costa Rica and the scarlet macaw is one of the most common. Among the wide variety of reptiles are 70 species of lizard and 2 species of Crocodile. The fertile tropical jungle provides ample wild fruit trees for the popular mammals of Costa Rica. Encounters with white faced monkeys have become common in many popular tourist areas. While howler monkeys, on the other hand, tend to be a bit more shy. In an effort to preserve it's biodiversity and reduce it's carbon footprint for generations to come, Costa Rica has made good use of its flowing rivers, geothermal volcanic activity and windy hilltops to shift it's energy consumption to nearly 99% renewable sources. So while leading the world in biodiversity, Costa Rica strives to lead us, as an example, toward a sustainable future.
