Hi, we're Jordana and Grant from Shot in the Dark Travel.
Come join us on our epic adventures around Southeast Asia.
So we've come to the Beegee and I might be pronouncing that wrong.
I'm calling it Beegee. We've come to the Beegee Floating Fish Market
and the best bit about this is that literally we are over the sea
on like a restaurant that's just been built on stilts so it's such a cool
environment. It looks so nice. Hopefully the food lives up to expectations.
I didn't realize that Foucault has its own beer so I'm trying it.
I don't know how to pronounce, how would you pronounce that Grant?
Bavina.
Bavina and it's super nice, really light, doesn't taste too strong.
For someone that's not like a typical beer drinker like it's really nice so
go you, Foucault, on your beer. Really nice.
And even more importantly, super cheap.
Yeah, I think it was £20,000 so super, super cheap.
We're gonna order some food now and you'll see what we get.
I've got a bit on the adventurous side on some of the things which
I don't know how happy Grant's gonna be about it but it's tough.
Tough titties.
If it was up to me, a bit out of our comfort zone here,
don't really know what we're doing, don't speak the local language,
I'd have just picked a fish, maybe something we've heard of like lobster
and a bit of some sides sorted.
Jordana's like, oh we should get the mantis shrimp, we should get the snails,
we should get this other thing I've never heard of.
Oh and we get to pick it all out.
We don't have a clue what we're doing, we'll be picking the bad ones probably
but it's all an experience.
I'm just gonna pick the fish that we want to try
and I think this is the way you do it, I don't know.
I've just kind of got up, got a basket and I'm just gonna, yeah, pick what we want.
There's some equipment here so we've grabbed it assuming that's what we should do
but we don't really know what we're doing.
So a few snails.
He jumped out empty-handed.
Wow, that's massive.
Four?
Do we want four?
Yeah, four, two each, yeah.
God knows how much this is costing but yeah, let's have four.
We've got some snails and some mantis shrimp.
So we have, we've just picked out our fish.
Jordana literally fished it with a net out of the tank.
How are you feeling?
Excited, like all the food looks really fresh.
So fresh that even when I was like trying to take the like mantis shrimp out of the tank,
they was like jumping out of my net, like actively like getting out of the net.
So I don't think you really get fresher than that really, do you?
But yeah, and the flavours that they cook, all different fishies, looks really interesting.
So yeah, I'm really excited.
Don't know how the sea snail's gonna taste but
either way, I'm like, I've never had snails before, even sea snails.
So I really want to try them.
We've seen a few people come here and we thought,
we're in a coastal place, we should eat some seafood.
And yeah, like here seems like the best place to come is because
it's where all the locals come, it's cheap.
And like we said before, like the night market just didn't seem that fresh.
It was packed, it just wasn't our feel at all.
I think the main bit for me about the night market was that none of the fish were really moving.
Like they were all in tanks and they were all just at the bottom, just completely still.
And I was watching them just thinking, I'm not an expert whatsoever,
but surely fresh fish are supposed to be moving around?
Like are they just, I don't know if they're dead or if there's something wrong with them.
I was just thinking, I got bad vibes and I was like, I'm not sure.
And the reviews as well, weren't they?
Yeah, but this place, I feel much better now.
When we got here, I felt a bit nervous.
Their English wasn't amazing, but then we spoke to someone else
and actually they were really helpful, they could speak really good English.
And the menu, it's a really comprehensive menu.
The bit that made me really nervous was every single thing on the menu,
except like rice and veg, says price depends on current price per kilo and weight.
But actually we went up to the board, there's a board next to where all the fish is
and there's just the prices per kilo based on like daily rates.
So it's like if you want the mantis shrimp, it's, you know, x dong per kilo.
If you want the crab, it's this and everyone pays the same price and you can work it out.
So it's a lot more above board than I thought.
So our food has arrived, we're just waiting on the garlic rice
and we're just gonna tuck into the rest of it because we're so excited.
So we've got some sort of assorted veg, we've got a couple of cheesy oysters,
we've got some sweet, what are they?
Sweet snails, sweet sea snails with lemongrass.
Yep, we've then got four massive mantis shrimp in chilli and garlic.
And then we've got, I think it's called cobia.
So we've got cobia fish, which I googled it and I think it's the same as cod
and it's just the different names.
We've basically got white fish in a caramel claypot sauce, so that sounds very nice.
We've had claypot before in Vietnam and it's always really sweet, really tasty.
So excited for all this.
We've gone a little bit overboard, haven't we?
I think most people probably wouldn't get so many different dishes
but we thought how often are we coming to a genuine, authentic fishing village
and getting fresh fish that's just been caught that day.
They've also given us a bowl of the water that the veg was cooked in.
I've had a sip of it, it just tastes like boiled veg water
so I don't really know why they've given us that.
The waiter gave us it and was like, oh this is the water the veg was cooked in
and we were like, and what do we do with it?
And he was like, just sort of didn't really, couldn't explain it to us
we don't really know what to do with that
so I think we're just going to leave it on the side.
But I'm going to try one of these sea snails now.
Do you know how to eat it?
I honestly don't know what to do with it.
You just, I think you just pull it out.
Do you like suck it out or do you pull it out?
So they've given us these like little sticks
so I'm guessing you pull it out with a stick.
Okay so you're going to pull it out with a stick.
Yeah like the shells are super cute but yeah I'm gonna.
So these are the ones Jordanna caught earlier, I say caught,
fished out of the tank earlier.
So there you go, steaming so much.
It's actually really quite big.
Oh it smells really good.
I'm going to dip it in this, so I think it's like a
chilli and lemon sauce that they've given us.
Dip it in that and try it.
Thank you.
Is it good?
It's pretty good.
It's got like, it's quite salty like fish
and I would say it's got like the texture of like squid.
But yeah it's actually pretty decent, I would have this again.
I was going to say I've never had snails before
and I wasn't in a rush to have them
so this was definitely a Jordanna decision to order them.
Yeah no I'll eat all of these.
No I'm not going to try one.
No he's like I'll have them.
But yeah no.
I'm getting my fair share of the food don't you worry but.
But yeah like pure decent.
Right what I'll do is I'll put it in there so.
Sauce it up for me.
This is a bit weird isn't it?
You need a compressor.
I don't know if that's, oh this is all right
or you don't like it, I can't really tell.
The flavour is nice, the texture is not for me.
So I don't really like.
You don't like squid.
I was going to say I don't like squid if it's too rubbery.
If it's super fresh and it's soft that's great.
If it's a little bit rubbery, not for me.
That was like at least as rubbery as squid, if not rubberier.
I liked it, I thought it was good.
Maybe we'll be doing a deal where you get the extra snails
and I'll have extra of something else because that won't.
It tasted fine but the texture just wasn't quite for me.
Right do you want your oyster?
Sure I'm going to chopstick my oyster.
Chopstick that oyster.
So it's like a cheesy sauce.
It's very hot.
Can I eat?
Is it so hot I can't eat it?
No I can give it a go.
It's very cheesy.
Go for it.
Never seen anyone eat an oyster with chopsticks.
The cheesy sauce is very stodgy.
So normally an oyster just slips straight in
whereas it's like sticking because of all the cheese.
That is really nice.
So I've only had cheesy oysters once before.
I normally prefer them with the shallot vinaigrette
but that was absolutely gorgeous.
Oh really because you was not wanting to get this were you?
That was really really good.
I would have happily had lots of those.
Well that's good.
Yeah you need to try that because you're going to love it.
That is so good.
So far everything has been absolutely amazing.
Now we've got the main course.
We've got the ridiculously comedy sized shrimp.
Literally the chilli and garlic salt that I tried earlier
is super super nice.
Have we been given like things to crack it open and just use your hands?
I'm really not sure.
I thought we'd have had like a you know like a lobster cracker.
They're like oh no that's quite easy.
It's pretty easy.
We should have watched some locals see how they did it instead of just struggling.
So I haven't got all the meat off yet
but just so you can see that's my first attempt at just getting a bit of the meat off.
That is a big chunky bit of meat that isn't it?
It is.
So that's a prawn as well.
It smells so good as well.
I'm going to dip it in the chilli sauce that they give us which is super super nice.
Is it good?
That is so good.
It is basically just a massive lobster but it's really juicy.
Tastes super fresh.
Or a small lobster?
A bit of both.
A mixture of both but yeah that's super super fresh.
Really nice.
Look at that absolute whopper of a prawn.
Bring it close.
How big and fresh and juicy is that?
This is the biggest shrimp I've had in my entire life.
Is it going to be the tastiest?
That's the question.
How good is that?
And the answer is yes.
That is fantastic.
This is so nice.
Honestly you've got to get yourself down here.
We're at Beegee Market.
This is fantastic.
It's so fresh.
It's so soft.
It is delicious.
This is why the locals are here definitely.
Super super good.
Honestly I cannot believe how soft that was.
That was like yeah I'm speechless.
So we are going for the fish.
We've got cobia which I think is cod.
Caramel claypot.
I'm so excited.
I've had claypot before.
We've not made claypot pork or chicken and it's always been amazing.
So I cannot wait to see how good this is.
And I dropped it.
Take two.
Right.
Oh my god that is so good.
Honestly the fish is so soft.
The caramel claypot is like
it's like sweet.
It's flavoursome.
It's yeah I can't believe how soft the fish is.
It's cooked to perfection.
You can tell it's super fresh.
This is absolutely amazing.
This is honestly the best fish I've ever had.
Oh my god.
Chris has thought about everything that he likes.
This is the best ever.
Then it's the next thing.
It's the best ever.
No no this is the best fish.
This is this was a side of garlic fried rice.
And like literally we like tucked into it and there's so much left.
Like the portions are huge.
We've got like two thirds of a bowl of rice.
Loads of greens.
We've got like half a fish left.
Yeah two thirds of the two thirds of the snails are still left.
Like we've got oh there's some on you then.
She thought someone had crawled on her but she just dropped her own chopstick on her lap.
But yeah we've got so much left.
Like this has been so good.
I'm really glad Joanna picked this one.
I was a little bit dubious but this is absolutely delivered.
You need to come here and have some seafood here.
It's such a nice setting and the food is amazing.
It's been easily some of the best food we've had in our three months in Vietnam.
It has been absolutely gorgeous.
And as well it's good value for money.
So we don't know the full total yet.
We've not got the bill.
But each of the dishes individually I was adding up as he was weighing them.
And I think it's going to be about half the price as if we'd bought it at one of the fish
restaurants in the in the main town.
So it's not a cheap meal but we're getting like you know we've gone for the massive shrimp
that's this big.
We're eating the oysters.
We're not going for the cheap stuff.
But it's been well worth it.
This has been absolutely gorgeous.
And I think we're going to call it a night now.
Head to some bars.
Get an early night.
Up early tomorrow to explore more of Phu Quoc.
Can't wait.
