Hey guys, it's Angel. Today we're going to be making Chinese broccoli or gai lan. In Mandarin
we call this jie lan, and it is a very nice leafy vegetable. If you haven't had it before,
there's these vegetables with these broad leaves. It's dark green broad leaves and a fat stem.
They're super delicious, really easy to make. A lot of times they serve this in Chinese dim sum
restaurants with some oyster sauce. I'll show you how to make it. It's quick and easy, just
three minutes to cook. So with that, let's get started. For the ingredients, we'll need Chinese
broccoli. I have a half a bunch of Chinese broccoli that I got from the store, and some
oyster sauce if you like it with sauce. So I've gone ahead to pre-wash my Chinese broccoli,
and now we're just going to prepare them to be cooked. The first thing I like to do
is trim off the very end, just a slice, so that way we have fresh stems.
Next, because the stems are so thick and we're going to be blanching these in water, what I like
to do to make sure that they cook evenly is to just give it one little trim right here, just
one inch with the knife, just a slice down like that. Now if you have thicker stems, what you can
do is you can make a cross, so kind of a plus, instead of just one slice down the center. But I
like to do just one slice because these are kind of medium fat stems. And now we're ready to cook.
I'm just going to boil some water first. I'm going to give that a few minutes and let that boil.
Once the water has come to a boil, we're going to put the Chinese broccoli in down
stems first. And the reason why we want to do stems first and cook it is because the stems and
the leaves cook at a different rate. So I'm just going to put these in stem first for about a
minute and a half. And I'm just going to let that lean gently against the pot.
All right, it's been a minute and a half, so I'm just going to now
submerge the entire Chinese broccoli stem to leaf in the boiling water.
We're going to let that boil for two minutes more and then it'll be done.
Before we take the Chinese broccoli out, I'm just going to do one last thing,
which is put a little bit of olive oil right into the pan.
So if you don't have olive oil, you can use a vegetable oil as well. And the reason why I like
doing this is so when we remove the Chinese broccoli, the oil will coat the vegetable.
That looks really beautiful. It's like a bright green leafy vegetable. Before we go ahead and
serve our Chinese broccoli, sometimes people like to put oyster sauce and drizzle it directly over
but since I'm kind of a bit of a purist, I like to have my vegetables
plain. And so I'm just going to put a little bit of oyster flavored sauce
in a side dish. So give that a quick shake.
Just get a little bit of oyster sauce there and we can serve this on the side.
Now we're ready for the taste test. So I've got my fork and knife here. We're going to just
cut a little bit of the stem here. Very tender. A little bit of oyster sauce. Just a little.
I'm a huge fan of jie lan, Chinese broccoli. So this is a really quick and easy way to make
even a small portion for yourself at home. I'm Angel. Thank you guys so much for watching.
