After leapfrogging Bayern on matchday 33, Dortmund were 90 minutes removed from
ending an 11-year wait for a Bundesliga title as they hosted Mainz on the final day of the season.
83,000 packed out the Signal Iduna Park while hundreds of thousands took to the streets of
Dortmund. However, their side got off on the wrong foot when Andreas Hank Olsen's first ever
Bundesliga goal drew first blood for Mainz on the quarter-hour mark. Far from the picture-perfect
start Dortmund were hoping for, but a few minutes later they were handed a chance to produce an
immediate response. Guerrero won the penalty after Marco Fritz, the referee, consulted the
sideline monitor. Sebastian Allaire, the hero from last weekend, shouldered the responsibility
but it was Mainz keeper Finn Darman who came out on top. Tension levels were rising in Dortmund
and to make matters worse, Mainz then doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark.
Arjen Onesio had never scored against Dortmund in nine previous meetings.
This goal was a dagger through their title hopes. Dortmund were letting the Bundesliga
Meisterschale slip through their fingers. With the title up for grabs though they proceeded to
throw the kitchen sink and more at Mainz after the restart. Their patience though was tested
as it wasn't until the 69th minute that they reduced the arrears when some neat combination
play was finished off by Raphael Guerrero. A lifeline for Aiden Terzic and co.
But it was a lifeline they failed to grab. Niklas Süle did level the scores but with the equaliser
coming in the 96th minute it proved too little too late as Bayern's win in Cologne saw them
snap the title out of Dortmund's hands on goal difference at the end of a title race for the ages.
Ecstasy was expected. Dismay was delivered. Heartbreak for Dortmund as they squandered
another opportunity to crown themselves German champions.
