(Premier League 2022/2023): Highlights Brighton - Manchester City

It's a particularly warm welcome on a beautiful sunny day on the south coast in Brighton. The champions had just a few hours to bask in the glory of Sunday's coronation. This incredible season still has plenty of exciting challenges lying ahead. The tantalising prospect of a magnificent treble within touching distance on the horizon. Lewis and Gundelang. Gundelang tapping it out wide to the ever winning Bernardo Silva. On to Foden on the edge of the area. Foden with a lovely twist and turn and into the area he goes. Pops in across and Haaland heads it over. Well that was a golden chance. Foden with a beautiful twist and turn. Got away from one or two Brighton defenders. Clicked in a delightful cross to the far post. Kept alive with a little touch on to Estupiñan who's in the left wing position. He drives a long cross to the opposite side of the pitch. To Pascal Gross who mishits it. And City will get this one away through Rodri. And they've got it in the left back position with Foden. And Foden to Rico Lewis. Lovely play from Rico Lewis. Got away from a couple of challenges. Oh and that's delightful from Foden. City going through the party tricks but then they lose the ball. And Brighton have got a chance here. And there's a deflection on the shot from Billy Gilmore. And it's a save from Ortega. Well I suspect there was one or two party tricks too many there. The press from Brighton was successful because they caused City to lose possession of the ball. And it's helped on and then cleared by Rico Lewis. And it's on the edge of the City penalty area. Challenged by Gundogan. And the referee's giving a free kick. Round about 22 metres from goal. And a lot more central and a lot nearer than the last free kick. It was hit by Gross. Welbeck or Estupignan. It is Welbeck. And it's against the post I think it was. Ortega threw himself at it. But I think it hit the post. I don't think Ortega got a touch on that. And back into possession. Well they have had some good moments. And that was pretty close. Free kick wasn't it? Just inside of the head of John Stone. Anticipation on those Brighton supporters behind. They're thinking is that the goal? But great effort. Lots of twisting and turning from Enciso. But he lost the ball. Brighton have got a man down. Simon Hooper says City are allowed to play on. And they're going to do so. And Haaland's through the middle. Haaland with a chance. Good goalkeeping from Steele. Although I've got the impression Michael that he never really had... No he didn't. It's when he went across. Seized the space. In front of the goalkeeper. I expect him just to pass it down the sides of him. As he cuts across. And maybe there was just a little tug. Changes his stride. A little bit of a finish. That angle that he tried to create. It's that balancing act isn't it? Between wanting to maintain your momentum. And obviously not... I'm going to pause because Haaland's through on goal. He's got Steele in front of him. He gets round Steele. He lays it off to Foden. And Foden puts City in front. It was a through ball to Haaland down the channel. Haaland just seemed to sort of think, well I can't go with this on my own. So he laid it across to Foden. Foden hit it. Van Geck got a touch on it. And it ended in the back of the Brighton goal. And City lead by one goal to nil. There was a through ball into the channel. Haaland was coming at Steele. He got round him. But realised Foden was in a better position. Foden hit the shot. And Van Geck hit it into the net. But it will be a Foden goal. And Foden with his stunning record against Brighton. Has now scored against them for the sixth time in his career. And City lead by one goal to nil. That was great awareness. That little set from Haaland. Riyad Mahrez gets him away. In behind. And just waits. Just feeds it into Phil Foden. He's composed. He doesn't hit it really that clean. But it's enough isn't it? He's just deflected into the near post. Foden's in the possession of Jason Steele. The Brighton goalkeeper. Who quite a few first team appearances. Second choice. There's an injury. Allowed him to stay in the net. As the shot comes towards Ortega. Wow! It's into the back of the net. There'll be no clean sheet tonight. And Sisso has hit a wonder goal. A right footed shot. He kind of hits across the ball. And it flew into the top corner of the net. That is a sumptuous strike. And if you are going to give up your clean sheet. Well, at least give it up to something as breathtaking. As what we've just witnessed here. That's an incredible strike. He just pushes it out of his feet. And I'm thinking. Is he going to hit it from there? He doesn't. As soon as it goes. It's so clean. You see Ortega just attempting to dive. But it just moves away into the roof of the net. It's as clean. It's as good as a strike. You'll see. City coming now to the final third. They've got men over in the box. If they can find the right cross. The ball is with Mahrez. And now it's with De Bruyne. De Bruyne hooks it in. Foden's header! Oh, it shaved the top of the angle of Poston Bar. A lovely clip ball in from De Bruyne. Foden with a cushioned header. The goalkeeper nowhere near it. And it just shaves the angle of Poston Bar. The ball is in the possession of Mahrez. He gets towards the edge of the penalty area. On towards De Bruyne. On towards Mahrez. Back to De Bruyne. De Bruyne battles away. Haaland's got it. On it goes to Gundogan. Gundogan hits the shot right across the face of the goal. It took a little neck. It's a City corner. But City almost getting back in front again. McAllister has the ball now for Brighton who are coming down the right-hand side. Midway inside the City half. And that's helped on. But Stones wins it. And Stones will clear it. Oh, no, he won't. And it reaches Ferguson. And the shot was fizzing. And Ortega cleared it for the corner. Well, I think it was a mishit clearance by Stones. City seem to have that under control. And then I don't know if he just mishits it or he tries to play a pass. But it bounces to Ferguson. And Ferguson is stopped at the near post. Since Veltman came on, it's allowed Gross to come away from the full-back position and into midfield where we're used to seeing him. Now, great skill by Ferguson. He just lost the ball there. And then it's hit from distance by Estupiñan. And it flew by the upright. You could tell by Ortega's reaction that he wasn't sure where it was going. He's probably thinking, surely not again. It's going to be a long range, but I can't get anywhere near where he hits it so well. How it just drifts away from the side of the post. Lewis, midway inside the Brighton half. Helps it out wide to Palmer. Palmer taking on Veltman. Trying to get the better of Veltman. And he steps backwards and plays it to Lewis. And on it goes to Gundogan. And Gundogan to Palmer. Palmer in a crossing position. Tries to get the on Veltman. It's a great cross and Haaland's going to score! Brilliant from Cole Palmer. And Haaland could not miss. He does not miss. And the City fans, who've made the long journey to Brighton on Wednesday night, have seen a goal at their end of the pitch. It's not just a goal from anyone. It's a goal from Haaland. He clicks to 53. 37 in the Premier League. And City lead by two goals to one. Oh, hang on. Hang on. It might not be a goal after all. The monitor. He's going over to the monitor. Oh, goodness. Oh, dear, oh, dear. Yeah. I don't think I've seen that happen. Sorry, I don't think I've not seen that happen when a ball goes into the box. But it isn't a goal. It won't stand.
