Have Liverpool sunk Leicester City's chances of avoiding relegation?

Two games left to save themselves, David. Two points adrift of safety,
leaking goals again. The only side in Europe's top five leagues without a clean sheet since
the World Cup. Just how big a blow is this latest defeat? It's a hammer blow, Jules, and I think
Leicester are sinking very quickly. They played Liverpool at the worst possible time. Liverpool
always finish the season well. That's their seventh win on the trot. They look on absolute fire. It
would take a brave person to bet against them. Finishing in the Champions League spots now,
they've only got two games. The other teams above them have got three, but they are not easy
fixtures and they ate Leicester alive. It could have been worse. Leicester, their players look
bereft of confidence. I thought Dean Smith and the backroom team that came with him, including
John Terry, was a good decision in the circumstances. You may reflect on whether
they should have got rid of Brendan Rodgers, but there were not many fans who were displeased with
it at the time in Leicester City colours anyway. But it's gone terribly wrong despite having quite
a bright start. You know, this is really looking gloomy for them and the wider picture at Leicester.
They've got players out of contract. They've got players being linked with moves away.
There's going to be a lot of recriminations for this. It's not completely over, but they don't
only need to make up that gap, but they've got to rely on the likes of Everton and Nottingham Forest
not to pick up points, and I suspect they probably will.
Yeah, and the two games they've got remaining, Martin, a team you cover regularly, Newcastle
at the weekend, then they finish the season at home to West Ham. I mean, as David said,
they might need other results, probably going to need to win both of them. How big an ask is that?
I think that's Leicester nearly gone, very nearly gone tonight, and it's an incredibly quick demise
if you think 12 months ago they were playing Napoli in European football, and here they are
fighting for their lives. By the time they play the next game, they could be relegated.
The next game is going to be absolutely huge for Newcastle. You're going to have this incredible
atmosphere on a Monday night. Liverpool's form has really put the pressure on Newcastle and on
Manchester United. I can't see Leicester getting anything from a fight up St James' Park,
and that ends their stay in the Premier League, what, seven years after they were champions.
They made mistakes in the summer in terms of not investing. They didn't back the manager,
Brendan Rodgers, who knew that the team needed freshening up, and they just looked so tired
today, and you heard the cheers from the crowd from the first goal went in, the second goal went
in, and then you just saw those banks of blue empty seats coming as the game progressed.
There's such an incredible battle at the bottom, and it has this incredible
impact upon the top as well, and, you know, rumours of Liverpool's demise may have been
exaggerated. As David said, seven out of seven. The next game at home at Tassenbilla is perhaps
the one where you think there's a little bit of jeopardy in that one. The final game at Southampton,
you can see them absolutely turning Southampton over, and that puts the pressure on Newcastle,
who have obviously taken one point from the last two games, and Manchester United as well,
whose form kind of fluctuates. Yeah, let's carry on with the Liverpool theme then with you, David.
A point behind both Newcastle and Manchester United, keeping up the pressure with that
seventh successive win. They both have a game in hand, so Liverpool still need one of them to slip
up. Do you see either obliging? It's possible, looking at the fixtures, even United going to
Bournemouth next up won't be easy. Bournemouth, of course, have had a really impressive second
half of the season under Gary O'Neill. Newcastle, as Martin says there, have stuttered a little bit,
but that atmosphere against Leicester is going to be electric, and so they'll hope to plough on,
but Liverpool have got the momentum now. They've also got the experience of being here before.
They've got the manager, the players on form. They're on the whole fit. Let's see what happens
with Darwin Nunes, and they'll be having a taste for Champions League football now. They won't want
to fall out of the competition for the first time since, what, 2017? It's going to hopefully be for
them a fond farewell to the likes of Roberto Firmino, James Milner. I think they're going to
attack this ferociously. It's going to be a really big summer for Liverpool of change with
some of those contracts coming towards an end, needing to strengthen in midfield in particular,
players wanting to prove their point, and I just think Curtis Jones was absolutely sensational
tonight. Not just those two goals, but the performances on a whole, and he has been playing
much better recently as well, just when Liverpool are looking to recruit midfielders like McAllister
and Mason Mount, but they've got some pretty awesome players in their line-up already, and
if I was in the Liverpool ranks now, I would be fancying my chances of finishing in the top four.
Yeah, Martin, a big summer of change, David points to, at Anfield there, and obviously,
earlier in the season, Liverpool were struggling. The talk was of this big rebuild needed,
especially in midfield. Then we see a performance like that from Curtis Jones tonight. I mean,
does this impressive end to the season, even if they ultimately miss out on the Champions League
places, maybe suggest that that repair required is not as substantial as we maybe thought?
Yeah, I would agree with that, and what you've seen in the last couple of games is a
tactical switch from Jurgen Klopp in that he's copied Pep Guardiola and decided to
move one of his full-backs into midfield. That full-back happens to be Trent, who really suits
playing there, and all of a sudden, as he said afterwards in an interview on Sky, they now defend
with three when they attack. They then have two in midfield, of which he's won. Then you've got
five players going crazy up front. Leicester couldn't handle it today. Aston Villa will
struggle, Southampton will struggle, and Curtis Jones plays nine games running and emerges as a
serious player for next season. Trent's stepping into midfield, gives them an option.
The forwards are coming back and coming fit, and Diaz is fit, and Dominic Nunes is to come into
that equation. Suddenly, they have a lot more options. There may be testimony to Liverpool
standing by their manager there when some people were making wild calls that it was the end of
Jurgen Klopp. You think maybe they now only need to buy two midfielders, perhaps another defender,
and they will become very strong next season. The summer, as usual, is going to be very
interesting because Chelsea have to emerge stronger, and I'm sure we'll talk about them.
Liverpool will come back strongly. Manchester United have instilled a status quo. What do they
do? Arsenal, again, we will come to them. Newcastle have to kick on. You're going to
have all these clubs fighting over these players, and it's going to be an incredible summer.
